The old traditional type is called a smoke sauna with no chimney, 1500kg of stones that are heated over 5-6 hours, and the smoke flows through the room during heating. There are no words to be said, nothing anyone can do. That house and land was an extension of my Dad. It was his passion, his love, his oasis. His presence was still there; evident in the craftsmanship, in the unorthodox building methodologies, in the incredible materials (hand picked over 30 years of owning your own lumber yard) masterfully used in harmony. The exposed wooden beam, timber frame construction, custom slab floors, Italian plaster walls, the carved, curved wooden banisters, the angled copper rails, the trellis with grape vines I can still see him eating from, relaxing under the shade of its canopy, with a smug, proud of “how it was all coming together” smile. It was his little piece of heaven, it was where he and my Mom were supposed to grow old together, it was supposed to be an extension of his legacy. It’s all gone. The mill, the shop, the house. I know life is more than material things and the memories will always be there, but it’s tough to block out the “why” thoughts. Where do you like to hike? Along the river? On some of our high bluffs? Down in some of the deep, dark hollows where roaring waterfalls may hide? There are more than 100 miles of trails at Buffalo National River that may lead you to these very kinds of places. But there are also quieter places, places off the beaten path where you may go to find solitude, reflection, and peace. You may also find a touch of our history, a small piece of those folks who were here before us. A good way to find these out-of-the-way places is to follow the old roads that folks used so many years ago. Most of them are still there if you take the time to look. These old road traces lead you back through history to another time. Scroll through these photographs for a sneak peek of an old route through the Upper Buffalo Wilderness! (km) Photo descriptions: 1. We approach some rock walls, carefully laid stones that delineate the old driveway to the Hedges home. 2. The stone front steps of the Hedges old homeplace, which is now being reclaimed by nature. 3. The barn built by William “Pickle” Edgmon about 100 years ago. Great 11 days on the Northville – Lake Placid Trail. Established by the Adirondack Mountain Club in 1923. Starts in Northville, 50 miles northwest of Albany, NY in the Adirondack mountains of Upstate New York. The largest state park in the United States. Winds northward through valleys and over ridges, crossing rivers and wetlands 133 miles north to Lake Placid. Planned on finishing but ended up hiking 80+ miles but only 50+ on the trail so a 1/3 completed. Wow what an a amazing area! Most nights fell asleep to the sounds of owls, loons, beaver, coyote, mountain streams, a little rain and in the lean-tos mice! Met some great and interesting people and had an easy time hitching back to my car back down in Northville. Carried a little too much stuff, food mainly as I missed the Northville Post Office by 10 minutes and carried what I had planned to mail to the Piseco PO. - @sigpatagon on Instagram

✨2020 BA hons Photography Prize Roll Call✨ . One of three winners of the Micheal Wilson Prize, we present the work of Andrew Little @biig_little . Shot entirely in Culpeper, Virginia (USA) between 2019-2020 on Medium Format Film this project explores the value of these long forgotten monuments. Once containing the lives of now passed individuals their presence requires patience and respect . Using black and white photography I was able to explore these monuments with a formal approach. The delicate style in which I took these photographs reflects the quiet and intimate experiences I had with them . Culpeper is not known for any particular historical importance. On September 12 from 11 to 2 we will reenact Louis-Thomas Chabert de Joncaire’s landing here in May 1720, an event that led to the construction of Le Magazin Royal 300 years ago.
