Hoe door een avondje zuipen de invasie van Nederland werd uitgesteld🍻 ———— Adolf Hitler was van plan om al in januari 1940 Nederland, België en Frankrijk binnen te vallen. Het plan droeg de codenaam Fall Gelb. De Duitse leider stuurde majoor Hellmuth Reinberger (📷1) vanuit Berlijn richting het gebied rond de Rijn om zijn geheime plannen af te leveren. Vanwege de belangrijkheid van de geheimhouding mocht Reinberger absoluut niet per vliegtuig reizen van Hitler. ———— Bij een tussenstop in Duitsland kwam de Duitse majoor een goede vriend en collega Erich Höhmann (📷2) tegen. Ze begonnen met drinken en beleefden een prachtige avond. Höhmann was piloot en had voorgesteld om de volgende ochtend vroeg toch maar het vliegtuig te pakken, zodat Reinberger wat verloren tijd zou terugwinnen. Op 10 januari 1940 steeg er in de vroege ochtend een Duitse Messerschmidt Bf108 op vanaf Münster met Höhmann en Reinberger als enige inzittenden. ———— Het vliegtuig kwam in een mistbank terecht en dwaalde volledig af. Wegens een tekort aan brandstof moest het een noodlanding maken (📷3). De Duitse officieren overleefden de klap, maar waren op Belgisch grondgebied terecht gekomen, vlakbij Maasmechelen. Het eerste wat ze wilden doen toen ze het toestel uitklommen was het verbranden van de geheime documenten. Belgische soldaten hadden de crash echter zien gebeuren en waren snel ter plaatse. Nog voordat de Duitse geheimen vernietigd konden worden werden Reinberger en Höhmann gevangen genomen. ———— De Belgen stelden onder andere de Nederlandse regering op de hoogte van de documenten. Er werd echter getwijfeld of dit geen afleidingsmanoeuvre zou zijn. De troepen werden wel in staat van paraatheid gebracht. Adolf Hitler was witheet en Höhmann probeerde diezelfde dag nog zelfmoord te plegen uit angst en schaamte. Today we remember World War II veteran Patrick Henry ONeal. Patrick Henry O’Neal (March 2, 1911-April 28, 2012) joined the U.S. Navy on March 11, 1931. After basic training he was assigned to the USS Henderson with port duty in Shanghai, China. In 1934, he was assigned to the Heavy Cruiser, USS Augusta, flagship of the Asiatic Fleet. He had the privilege of serving with Captain Chester M. Nimitz as Commanding Officer, and “Chesty” Puller as 1st Lieutenant. O’Neal was a member of the commissioning crew of the USS North Carolina in 1941. He was involved in the first successful repelling of Japanese sea forces at the Battle of Eastern Solomons in August, 1942. The naval engagement lasted three days. P.H. O’Neal served as Chief Gunner aboard the USS Suwanee when it was hit by two kamikaze during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. He saw action in the Philippines when 18 escort carriers covered Gen. Douglas McArthur’s landing in October 1944. By April 1945, O’Neal had seen 82 consecutive days of action at Okinawa and surrounding island groups. He received a Bronze Star which was awarded by Admiral W.D. Sample on the flight deck of the USS Suwanee in August 1945. CITATION: “For meritorious service as Ship’s Gunner, attached to the USS SUWANEE, during operations against enemy Japanese forces in the vicinity of Nansei Shoto from April 1 to June 16, 1945. Exhibiting outstanding administrative and professional ability in the performance of his duties, Chief Gunner O’Neal organized and directed the loading and storage of ordnance under exceptionally difficult conditions, thereby contributing materially to the success of our air operations against the enemy. His technical skill and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.” O’Neal also saw action during the Korean War and retired from active duty in November 1954 as a Chief Warrant Officer. He remained in Fleet Reserve until 1960. Thank you, Mr. ONeal, for your service to and sacrifice for this country! Charles Williams Dec 31 1959 from QPA Queer Photo Archive of @jenniolsonsf For sure this is the best haircut of the week — the newspaper accounts of the time even pause to remark on this classic 1950s ducktail. This handsome hero went by the name Charles Williams while passing as a man: “Through about 25 states and at least four jails.” The newspaper stories of the time give us a sense of what Charles was navigating — reference is made to psychiatric help being suggested, followed by the seemingly forced reply, “I have no desire to be boy.” In one lengthy news story the parents are interviewed and although they are generally sympathetic they express the opinion that, “Barbara is a very mixed up girl… We want her to find herself.” Photos #1 & #2 are the original wire service image (the wire service 8 x 10 combines the two mug shots from the Golden, Colorado Jefferson County Jail), #3 is the November coverage of an initial arrest in which it sounds like Charles will return to their previous identity and then #4 reveals yet another arrest in December which leads us to suspect this is not just a passing phase. It’s not clear that this amazing person would have necessarily identified as butch. Tho we also don’t know they would have identified as trans in our contemporary understanding of that identity either. In the spirit of that wonderful uncertainty, here’s to opening up a space of common ground and shared experience in all our unique gender brilliance. From the initial adoption of a rigid racial and physical selection of their members, it was spent in the last years of the Second World War to also recruit foreign volunteers of German ethnicity or however ideologically linked to National Socialism despite their origin. The Waffen-SS participated in almost all the battles of the Second World War; their soldiers gave proof of combativeness, efficiency and strong ideological motivation to the point that, on the one hand, they were guilty of brutal episodes of summary violence against civilians and prisoners of war and, on the other, often showed an excessive and reckless disdain for danger. . . . 🇮🇹Le Waffen-SS (SS Combattenti) erano una forza armata della Germania nazista nata nel marzo 1933 come braccio militare delle SS.
