Thirteen years ago, today, Officer Russell was killed. We want to take today to remember his work and life. The following is an article written by Anne Da Vigo immediately following his death: If the best are sometimes taken from us early, Officer Scott Russell was one of them. Friends, neighbors and co-workers praised Russell (11619), as compassionate, fiercely loyal man and as a meticulous officer. The Placerville Area officer died July 31 when a driver involved in a pursuit ran Russell down in the median on Highway 50 while he was laying a spike strip. David Charles Zanon, 38, was arrested and charged with one count of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder involving two other officers. “He knew the job well and he did the job well. You could count on him,” said Officer Tammy Callahan-Monego (11892) of the Dublin Area. She worked with Russell in the Field Support Section of the Campaign Against Marijuana Planting program. Russell was one of those larger-than-life people who seem to have everything under control, said Officer Joe Wolf (11623) of the San Diego Area. “He was my academy classmate, the best man at my wedding, the guy I called about every major decision” Wolf said. “Everything he did, he did at 110 percent. He was so squared away. I’m sure his brass was as polished and his uniform was as perfect as the day he graduated from the academy,” Wolf said. Russell, 46, was a 22-year CHP veteran who had served at the Hayward and Bridgeport areas and the Field Support Section before transferring to Placerville Area, where he had been assigned for seven years. Although Russell was a highly disciplined officer, he had a lighter side. “Scott would take some little incident and make it into something that would put a smile on your face,” said Placerville Area Sgt. The 2018 TPON TIME Person of the Year: Frank V. Johnson “Usher for a New Era” - On February 20, 2018, Frank Veto Johnson was sworn in as the 30th President of TPON as a Republican from Ohio. Johnson had just won an election of the closest margins, overcoming Senator Warren by just one vote. That one vote may have very well changed the history of our simulation as we know it. Johnson had campaigned heavily on total sim reform. His involvement in the creation of the “TPON 2.0” plan, which outlined some sensible and in other aspects drastic changes to the way TPON operates laid the foundation for goals as President. Some of these goals were included resetting TPON as we know it. Less than a month before Johnson swore in, the new US and TPON Constitutions were officially ratified. Johnson took part in the writings of these Constitutions, being the principal writer of the TPON Constitution in particular. Through the ratification of these Constitutions, Johnson laid the groundwork for the reset. The reset had long been one of TPON’s most controversial issues. When the Constitution was ratified, and Johnson elected as President, he knew he had to be the one to finally turn back the clocks. On March 8th, 2018, President Johnson along with Joseph Pitts and John N. Tesla submitted their final version of the “Reset Act” which after intense debate in Congress made it to Johnson’s desk and thus signed into law. On April 3, 2018, TPON officially rewinded back 86 years smoothly, squashing all of the anti-reset concerns. The bloom of activity following the reset is regarded as one of TPON’s most active period. Despite Johnson serving only one term (albeit extended to 91 days due to new Constitutional provisions), he signed 42 pieces of legislation into law, vetoed 12, and issued numerous executive orders in-line with his Republican platform. In addition, Johnson set a new standard for how to operate the Executive, respond to events, and engage the world. Following his one-term tenure as President, Johnson continued to serve in TPON by authoring and moderating numerous events (which he still does). The date is October 25, 2020. It’s two weeks after the Los Angeles Lakers’ Game 6 Finals victory over the Miami Heat, and Commissioner Adam Silver is under heavy fire. As NBA referee Marc Davis came out and publicly stated that Commissioner Silver instructed the officials to make questionable calls in favor of the Lakers, as a plot to make the NBA more money with the Finals victory dedicated to the late Kobe Bryant. Silver has been ousted and replaced with a new commissioner, former Utah Jazz Head Coach Quin Snyder (who apparently has a law degree from Duke) Snyder proposed a radical idea, his “5 Year Plan” and it worked something like this. By the time the 2025-26 season started, every team would be relocated to a new city with a new identity, a fresh start to get Adam Silver’s apparent rigging off the mind.
