Orphaned By Poachers a Baby Rhino Makes a New Friend Profile Pics

Today is #WorldRhinoDay – a day to celebrate and raise awareness for the world’s five rhinoceros’ species! 🦏 This year’s theme is #KeepTheFiveAlive and we’re doing our bit to achieve just that with our two incredible conservation partners. These are the Lowveld Rhino Trust, who protect both black and white rhino species in Zimbabwe, and the Sumatran Rhino Survival Alliance who are working to save Indonesia’s critically endangered Sumatran rhino. Zimbabwe is home to 90% of the world’s black rhino population and the Lowveld Rhino Trust (who we’ve supported for over 13 years) is working to secure the future of all rhino here - through monitoring to ensure their on-going health, treating rhino with poaching-related injuries, assisting authorities with prosecuting poachers and translocating rhinos from high-risk areas to safer locations. The photo to the right shows female black rhino Floppy. She gets her name from her right ear which hangs down, the result of a wire snare injury she suffered when she was just four years of age. In 2005 LRT were able to rescue her and now we’re pleased to report that she’s given birth to her seventh healthy calf. There are currently 190 wild black rhinos in this area and our partners report another 10 births are expected by the end of 2020! More recently we’ve become a strategic partner of the Sumatran Rhino Survival Alliance in Indonesia - an amazing project working to boost Sumatran rhino numbers in the wild through a captive breeding programme. The population currently sits at less than 80 individuals as poaching and habitat loss – including forest destruction for palm oil and paper pulp – have wreaked havoc on the species. This years #WorldRhinoDay comes on the heels of some very good news! Two new Javan rhino calves have been spotted! The species is critically endangered with just over 70 individuals left. They are considered one of the rarest mammals on earth. Poaching and habitat destruction are the main threats to their survival. Yesterday saw the successful dehorning of a #WhiteRhino on Somkhanda Game Reserve, in partnership with @wildlandssa, @africa4africa_ the Emvokweni Community Trust (ECT) and Wildlife ACT. This forms part of a collaborative effort to dehorn #rhino populations as an effective and harmless tool in #antipoaching processes. While good rhino monitoring, #dehorning and anti-poaching measures remain an effective tool in combating the situation on the ground, it is vital that we remember the importance of biological management, as well as community education, engagement programs and capacity building for a sustainable future. The STS Team In Mozambique collaborate with @peaceparks and @anacconservacao to treat an Injured Elephant in the remote Zinave National Park {ZNP} Last week the anti-poaching rangers of ZNP in Mozambique, reported seeing an Elephant with what seemed to be a snare injury. STS vets immediately flew to ZNP and immobilised the giant pachyderm, fortunately no snare was found. The cause of the limp seen by the rangers was in fact a deep cut in the pad of the right back foot. The wound was cleaned and treated and we expect a full recovery. Here is Moon and Mususu again, wild chimpanzees, having a little group feeding experience in a fig tree. This behavior is referenced in my previous post as wadging and its basically the process of turning fruits into pulp; sucking the juice out and then discarding the dry remains of the fruit in a ‘wadge’. Moon is the 3 year old son to Mususu and he’s taking advantage of his mother’s strong chewing muscles. All apes, except humans, have a tall ridge on the top of their skull called a sagittal crest. This ridge of bone provides an attachment point for tendons which allow powerful jaw muscles greater leverage in chewing fibrous plant matter. EMERGENCY APPEAL for 12 day old baby rhino. EVERY $ counts Special SARF Supporter Appeal This 12-day old rhino calf was found two days ago, stuck in the mud on Save Valley Conservancy. As you can see, he is exhausted from the stress of being separated from his mum; also we don’t know how long he was stuck in the mud before he was found. The security team have been searching for his mother for the last couple of days but a reunion hasn’t happened yet. We need your help, please, for emergency helicopter and vet expenses, as follows;1. Two hour helicopter flight from Harare, plus 2 vets. 2. Locate the mother, Ivory, and dart her from the air. 3. Take the baby to her and get it to suckle and put each other’s smells on each other. 4. Partially dehorn the mother so she doesn’t harm her calf. 5. Reverse the dart and hope the mother accepts her calf. 6. Fly back to Harare. tall horse, human, horse. . #repost @sheldricktrust Kiko is now completely ensconced in Sirikoi life. The only remnant from his past life at our Nursery is his ever-patient Keeper, Simon. This is a crucial quality for anyone in Kiko’s world, because our headstrong boy usually does exactly the opposite of what is asked of him. Simon always comes into the day prepared with a hearty amount of lucerne pellets tucked in his pocket, as they have a magical way of making Kiko more amenable. @sirikoilodge is built to work around a giraffe’s whims, as they have raised Nditu (a fellow orphaned reticulated giraffe) since infancy, but Kiko and his wily ways have certainly taken things up a notch! Eight-year-old Nditu, for her part, has been remarkably patient about this upstart who materialized on her turf. She also has that crucial quality of patience, and doesn’t blink an eye at the younger boy’s antics. No stranger to unusual friendships, Kiko also immediately insinuated himself into Sirikoi’s small herd of horses and hoofs around with them most days. Sirikoi, set in the vast Lewa Conservancy, also has plenty of wild visitors to pique Kiko’s interest. It must be strange for him to see herds of full-grown elephants passing by, when he is used to the pint-sized variety from the Nursery, but he is politely curious about these sights. Last month, he latched onto a wild reticulated giraffe, and they seemed very comfortable in each other’s company. In 2014, @natgeo photographer Ami Vitale witnessed Samburu warriors from Sera in northern Kenya encounter rhinos for the first time on a visit to @lewa_wildlife. These animals had once been a common sight in the semi-arid region, but the last ones were killed by poachers about 25 years ago. Today, thanks to relocation efforts by the community and conservationists, they are once again roaming the vast rangelands of the Samburu people. Organisations behind the effort included the governmental @kenyawildlifeservice and nonprofits, @nrt_kenya and Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. The animals’ new home, Sera Community Conservancy, is locally owned and operated by the Samburu. To deter poachers, the rhinos are watched over around the clock by the park’s community rangers, who receive support from the project’s other partners. ⁣ ⁣ “This was the first time in East Africa [that] a local community took responsibility for the protection and management of the highly threatened black rhino, signaling a mind shift in Kenya’s conservation efforts,” the Northern Rangelands Trust wrote on its website at the time. Vitale added: “Many Kenyans have never seen a live rhino. Shango, Zoo Miamis 433 pound silverback gorilla, was immobilized on Wednesday so that he could be treated for wounds he sustained during a confrontation with his brother, Barney. Though disputes between males in bachelor groups are not uncommon, it is rare that they result in serious injury as it mostly involves a lot of posturing. Unfortunately, during a recent confrontation, their was physical contact that resulted in some serious bite wounds that required that Shango be immobilized for treatment. In addition to several procedures that included X-rays, abdominal ultrasound, a bronchoscopy, and a dental cleaning, in an abundance of caution, Shango also received several COVID-19 tests which fortunately so far have been negative. 🇬🇧 Today we want to remind you the story of Leon, the gorilla who lived in Loro Parque for 8 years and who then left for South America to form his own family. In addition, we take the opportunity to highlight the work of modern zoos and animal embassies like Loro Parque in protecting biodiversity and watching over the welfare of the animals with such attention. León and his brother Aladín arrived from Israel to be part of the group of single male gorillas. Since Loro Parque is a reserve for the European project of conservation of endangered species, which guarantees and coordinates the survival of the species, Leon was selected after 8 years in the Park as the ideal male for his genetic, physical and psychological characteristics, to join two females and start his own family in the Belo Horizonte Zoo in Brazil. Out in the bush on their daily wilderness walks the smaller elephants will sometimes look to their keepers for guidance and comfort. Today, as we celebrate World Rhino Day, we thank all our supporters who have given us the means to keep fighting for our rhinos, on the ground. 2020 has been challenging on all levels and we thank you all for the ongoing support 🙌 The following is an update on poaching survivor, Rita and her calf, Ndinani: 2016 poaching survivor, Rita, was sadly euthanized earlier during 2020 when her condition suddenly deteriorated because of an aggressive leiomyoma tumour, leaving her calf, Ndinani. Ndinani (meaning I am with you in Xhosa as named by veterinarian, Dr. Brendan Tindall) was only 14 months old and still dependent on Ritas care at the time of her death. Dr William Fowlds fitted the tracking collar in the days after Ritas death to ensure that her health and wellbeing could be monitored closely during the months after she was orphaned. The tracking collar was sponsored by Chipembere Rhino Foundation, for intensive monitoring purposes. Ndinani is regularly tracked in field using this tracking collar on her left front foot. She loves swims and mud baths, even during the icy winter months. She is doing remarkably well and has become a strong and confident little rhino all on her own. Nandankanan Zoo’s pangolin conservation breeding centre hosts pangolins rescued from illegal wildlife trade. The centre maintains an insurance population for the endangered Indian pangolin and has developed protocols for their proper housing, husbandry, health care and breeding. “We are also developing the method for rehabilitation of the seized animal. Once we reach a surplus population, we will be releasing them after proper evaluation of suitable release sites, zoo biologist Rajesh Mohapatra told Mongabay-India. Pangolins are solitary mammals that feed on ants and termites. Poaching for illegal international trade in live pangolins, meat, and scales primarily destined for Asia, mainly China and Vietnam, has made it one of the world’s most trafficked animals. In India, pangolins are found in a wide range of habitats that lie outside protected areas too. The animal is being poached from these areas as well. Of the eight known species of the pangolins, India is home to two species, the endangered Indian pangolin, and critically endangered Chinese pangolin. Trade in all eight species of pangolins is illegal. These gorillas are most often the victims of poaching incidents where poachers have killed their mother in order to steal the baby #gorilla to try to sell it. The Rangers of Virunga National Park have done an amazing job to counter this but occasionally it still happens. It has proven very difficult to rewild these traumatized gorillas so as a result, they need a place to live and people to care deeply for them. There is nothing more poignant than witnessing an elephant calf standing by his dead mother, in total despair. Wild is Life & ZEN and @ifawglobal will go to extraordinary lengths to rescue such a calf and give it a second chance. Meet SAMSON, the newest member of the rescue herd in Panda Masuie who is 18/22 months old. His mother had a suspected bullet wound, which left her unable to walk on. She died, leaving little Samson as an orphan. ZimParks contacted Wild is Life & ZEN, on Saturday afternoon, requesting assistance to rescue this calf. @josdanckwerts drove with his team to Hwange National Park and worked with ZimParks, through the night. It was a dangerous operation, using cellphone torches and a vehicle headlight to dart the calf with lion heard in the darkness. It was a long stressful journey back to the Panda Masuie boma. ZimParks kindly sent a vehicle to accompany the rescue vehicle all the way back. The team arrived home at 1.00am exhausted. Samson was unloaded and put into a boma, separate from the resident herd so that his introduction to the herd could take place a controlled daytime environment. Two keepers remained, encouraging him to eat and drink. However, he was extremely stressed and agitated, eventually breaking out of the boma. The resident herd were then released to help the handlers. They immediately raced down the hill, trumpeting and rumbling, calling for him to come back. They located Samson within minutes and coaxed him back inside the fence, where they spent the night getting to know each other- at 3.00am! At first light, the team found Samson in thick of the herd, surrounded by all the elephants, still touching and reassuring him. He was not at all agitated. Samson is now swimming and mud bathing, eating browse, walking happily into the sleeping quarters and engaged with the herd. He now has a second chance at a wild life, within a family who will nurture and care for him, for as long as he needs. Après 5 ans, il est temps que je m’exprime sur le combat mené, de parler des expériences vécues au contact des rangers et des espèces sauvages, d’en rapporter les joies et les peines, les nombreux obstacles surmontés. Le braconnage qui détruit les animaux n’est que l’arbre qui cache la forêt de leur future disparition. Les scientifiques évoquent une sixième extinction en référence aux cinq précédentes, toutes issues d’événements cataclysmiques (éruptions volcaniques, chute de météorite, …). Ce n’est pas le cas aujourd’hui. Nous assistons non pas à une sixième extinction mais à une première extermination : celle conduite par notre civilisation qui au nom du progrès et de la rentabilité détruit le Vivant. Cette page Facebook sera désormais le lieu où je m’exprimerai librement, où je donnerai mon opinion sur les thèmes qui touchent notre Combat. Pendant ces cinq années, je n’ai eu de cesse avec mon équipe d’assister les rangers, de protéger les populations humaines fragilisées pour les accompagner dans la défense des espèces sauvages qui leur sont chères. Scientists say they have successfully extracted eggs from the last two remaining northern white rhinos, a step on the way to possibly saving the subspecies from extinction. Ten eggs were harvested from the female rhinos, named Najin and Fatu, at the @olpejeta Conservancy in Kenya. The scientists hope to use them to create viable embryos that can be transferred into surrogates, as neither of the donor rhinos can carry a pregnancy to term. The next step is to select female southern white rhinos, another rhino subspecies, at Ol Pejeta to serve as surrogate mothers. @marataba_ and Marakele National Park are home to critically important, medium-sized population of white and black rhino, which, similarly to all other rhino populations on the continent, is under pressure from several threats. The most serious threat is the current onslaught of poaching for their horn. This has escalated since 2008 to the point where more than a thousand white rhino have been poached annually in South Africa alone, forcing the rhino population into a serious decline. Guests joining Wild Eye on one of the @maratabaconservationcamps safari experiences (watch this space) will contribute directly to ongoing management interventions to identify every single rhino in the park. Animals are individually located and immobilized before having ear notches cut into the ears for easy identification, microchips inserted into the horns and body, and DNA samples taken and submitted to the Rhinoceros DNA indexing system (RHoDIS) database. Whilst the plight of these large and charismatic species is certainly worth recognizing on this day, let us not forget the larger suite of wildlife species that are significantly impacted by illegal bushmeat hunting, body part trade, human wildlife conflict as well as habitat loss and fragmentation. Sumatran rhinos can only be found in the forests of Indonesia — and separated by mountainous terrain, they now struggle to find mates in the wild. While this species has lived throughout Southeast Asia for millennia, there are only 80 rhinos left today. It is almost full moon and the poachers are active again! This little guy was orphaned this weekend, his mother brutally killed and her horn hacked off. Fortunately the rangers found the two week old calf quickly. Our Pilot Nico and our vet Dr Gerhardus flew out immediately and brought the calf to @the rhino Orphanage team. We named him Johnnie after @j_n_s_0 one of our Rhino 911 family members. Thank you to everyone who assisted with the rescue and who dropped everything they were doing so fast. I watched today as the team consisting of rangers, and veterinarians, battled for four hours in the most appalling weather, to save the life of a female giraffe. We responded to a call from the community that a giraffe was having difficulties birthing. The giraffe would need to be tranquillised; this is an extremely particular process due to its physiology. Basically the length of its neck means that it can extremely easily suffocate when tranquillised, so the vet team has to wake it immediately its fallen unconscious, and then hold its neck and head down to stop it standing. Once the procedure is complete they’ll release the neck and it will stand of its own accord. It became obvious early on that the calf could not be saved. If we were to save the mother the calf had to be removed. My head is still spinning through the sights and sounds of them trying absolutely everything they could to save the mother. The weather threw everything she could at us, we shivered in pouring rain, and warmed again, and steamed as we dried in the sun. The giraffe stayed with us right until the very end and then finally I think all the assembled, including the patient, realised we had come to the end of the road. I am always in awe of the work that gets done here as a matter of course. Let’s not forget that these are wild animals, and yes nature will take its course, but if we can help, I believe we should. They tried today like I’ve not seen before; they didn’t fail, they just didn’t beat the overwhelming odds that nature threw at them in so many guises. If I ever doubted the importance of these vets and rangers, I no longer do. In de bossen van de Pyreneeën loopt het Gasconne varken. Een zeer oud weidevarken van het Iberische soort met grote, naar voren gerichte oren. De Gasconne, ook bekend onder de naam “Noir de Bigorre”, is tegenwoordig grotendeels weggekruist en daarom zeer zeldzaam. Het ras is afkomstig uit dezelfde streek als het Gasconne rund, dat al sinds 1987 in de Baambrugse weiden van Lindenhoff graast. Jaren geleden werd besloten dat er ook maar eens wat Gasconne varkens moesten komen. GORILLAFAMILIE De gorillafamilie in Diergaarde Blijdorp is uitgebreid met een nieuw gorillajong. Tamani is de moeder en dit is haar zesde jong. Het pasgeboren jong is een mannetje en hij heet Thabo. In Afrika betekent dit ‘vreugde’. De vader van alle jongen is de bekende Bokito. Zijn familieclan bestaat nu uit drie vrouwen, vijf dochters, twee zonen en een aangenomen zoon. Bokito houdt zich niet bezig met de opvoeding van de jongen. Met zijn indrukwekkende verschijning zorgt hij voor rust in de groep en een veilig klimaat voor alle familieleden. Tamani is een zorgzame moeder. Ze heeft zich met volle overgave op haar moederrol gestort. Ze laat de kleine goed drinken en wiegt hem af en toe in slaap. Tamani heeft ook een dochter van twee jaar, Tonka. Die moet nog wel wennen aan haar nieuwe broertje, die alle aandacht van haar moeder opeist. Gelukkig krijgt ze veel steun van haar grote zus Thirza. De hele familie, inclusief de nieuwste aanwinst, zijn met mooi weer buiten te bewonderen en met slecht weer binnen. In het wild worden gorilla’s ernstig bedreigd, vooral door vernietiging van hun natuurlijk leefgebied: het tropisch regenwoud. Mijnbouw is bijvoorbeeld een groot probleem met een verwoestend effect op het biotoop en de aantallen (oostelijke) gorilla’s. Het gaat hierbij vooral om het winnen van de metaalerts coltan, een onmisbaar onderdeel in mobiele telefoons en laptops. Blijdorp wil de gorilla’s helpen. Iedereen kan ook meehelpen en zijn oude mobieltje bij de Diergaarde inleveren. Vervolgens wordt die gerecycled. Zo hoeft er minder mijnbouw te worden gepleegd en kun je meehelpen aan de bescherming van het leefgebied van de gorilla’s. Je oude mobiel is dan ook een mooi kraam-cadeau bij een bezoek aan de Diergaarde. Je kunt deze inleveren in de verzamelbak bij het gorilla-buitenverblijf. These pygmy taters are found only in the interior forests in parts of West Africa, mainly confined to Liberia, with small numbers in the neighboring countries of Sierra Leone, Guinea, and the Ivory Coast. As a shy, nocturnal herbivore, the pygmy hippo eluded Western science until 1840. Meet Romeo, an eastern black rhinoceros born at Lincoln Park Zoo last May! His birth was recommended by the Eastern Black Rhinoceros Species Survival Plan. While Romeo receives lots of enrichment from his dedicated keepers and adoration from local fans here in Chicago, Lincoln Park Zoo is committed to conserving other members of this critically endangered species in the wild. Lincoln Park Zoo scientists have assisted the recovery of endangered black rhinos across Africa, which were nearly driven extinct during the 1990s by habitat destruction and poaching. On Friday, the team rescued a male adult giraffe that had a metal rod in the left hind leg. The AKTF team joined by other organisations including, KWS Vet Dr Limo and his team,David Sheldrick Trust Team, Mara Conservancy Rangers (Oloololo rangers & Angama station rangers) worked as one team and managed to rescue the giraffe. The Rangers will be meeting the community elders briefly for the purpose of enhancing and strengthening community engagement in protecting the wildlife within the community areas. There are several resident giraffe families in the community areas that need to be protected as the problem has been reoccurring.
