The ideals put forth are timeless, striving for something impossible: true liberation. It is hard to be an American. It is tiring. You are either moving forward or falling behind. We don’t keep perfect pace together. Someone will always be out ahead of you beckoning you on toward true liberation. And in light of that call, you will harden your heart — or open it. I hope this Independence Day is different for you—not because of Covid. A decade of the Tories and we have record levels of hunger and homelessness with more people living on the streets than ever before, they have decimated the mental health services, abandon social care for the elderly, crippled the NHS, left firefighter numbers in crisis and the most heartbreaking of all now one in every three children is living below the poverty line. This iconic image has been admired and memed ad nauseam, but how many people know her name today? This is Gloria Richardson and she is 98 years old now. This iconic photo was taken in Cambridge, Maryland in July 1963, only a month before the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, which was held on August 28, 1963. Two weeks before the march, thanks to the publicity from the Maryland protests, Ms. Richardson was invited to give a two-minute speech at the march. Along with that invitation, she received instructions: Dont wear dungarees (jeans). She found a denim skirt and showed up to find Lena Horne presenting Rosa Parks to the European media, explaining that she was the lady who started the Montgomery bus boycott. Ms. Richardson gave a very detailed and interesting interview to Amy Goodman for Democracy Now in August 2013 when she was 91, about her experience at the march - including Bayard Rustin escorting her to the right place to speak, only for her to have the microphone snatched from her hands. Garey Foley, a #Gumbaynggirr man is a founding member of the Black Power movement in Australia. A longtime advocate for aboriginal rights, Mr. Foley is renowned for his activism, writings and acting. Mr. Foley helped spearhead the establishment of the first Aboriginal self-help and survival organisations, including Redfern’s Aboriginal Legal Service, Aboriginal Health Service in Melbourne and the National Black Theatre. For over forty years he has fought for Aboriginal self-determination and worked for linking anti-colonial struggles with black liberation movements throughout the world. DEFUND THE POLICE. This piece is inspired by the Young Lords Partys poster, Health, Food, Housing, Education (swipe for original). I’ve been inspired by the Young Lord’s Party since high school. Their work towards civil and human rights, community empowerment and self-determination for Puerto Rico, Latinxs, and all oppressed people spoke to me. To achieve these things they focused on mass education, protests, occupations, and community programs. After the assassination of Dr. King, the Black Panther Party and Young Lords realized the power of unity of all oppressed people to create change. Even though the original poster was created in 1971 you can see how it’s still relevant today. We need change! We demand change!
