🏊🏼‍♂️Catalina channel swim 🏊🏼‍♂️ is on the calendar!! I had been thinking about booking this since I swam the #EnglishChannel. But once it came time to book it, I’ve been in a holding pattern in this new world we’re living in. I decided that I needed a goal in the future; something to look forward to. I also really need a goal to train for (whether it happens or not... to be honest). I also need to believe that our lives will have at least some normalcy in the future... GOOD MORNING LOVERS! Walking back to the Roastery this morning was not the usual encounter! News Crew @anniepullar & @nathanat9 stopped me to have a chat. About Coffee? Nope? About Beard Game? Nope. About having a morning walk being good for your health? Kind of.... They asked me about the Notorious Australian Phenomenon that occurs from July to November each year! Yep Magpie Season! Magpies build their nests & raise their young in a limited area known as a territory. It’s the males that defend their nests from the time the eggs are laid until the young birds are fledged, & they will attack anything they consider to be a threat, from a raven or a dog to a human. The best way to avoid being swooped is to change your route. Magpies only swoop within 50 metres of their nests so try to stay away. If that’s not possible, here’s some tactics to avoid being swooped: Travel in groups, as swooping birds usually only target individuals. Carry an open umbrella above your head. Wear sunglasses and a broad-brimmed hat. If you ride a bike, walk it through magpie territory or have a flag on the back of the bike that is higher than your head. Do not act aggressively. If you wave your arms about or shout, the magpies will see you as a threat to the nest – and not just this year, but for up to five years to come. Walk, don’t run. Avoid making eye contact with the birds. If you know of an area that has swooping magpies, put a sign up to warn passers-by. Don’t throw your empty coffee cup at them and curse! Enjoy your coffee & watch out for those magpies! So I invited them to meet me & visit for a Roastery tour so they popped around before they left the area and had a coffee. June 25 is a date that’s cemented in my mind. The start of the 2012 Olympic Trials, the last swim meet of my career. I fought like hell to get there. Put my life on hold for a year, endured criticism and confusion, trained 20+ hours a week with high schoolers while working a full time office job. This is a story of two completely different people. 🤯 . . Growing up in Texas, Hussain’s body weight was pushed to the extreme as he completed his university football career. After moving to Vancouver, Hussain noticed the quality of his health worsening after the birth of his first child and accepting a promotion at work that required frequent international travel. He became depressed as his self-esteem reached an all-time low along with him tipping the scales at 350 pounds. As desperation kicked in, Hussain dramatically cut carbs, calories and increased cardio. Dropping a whopping 155 pounds all on his own, but at the cost of feeling lethargic and unmotivated on a daily basis due to crash dieting. . . Joining team @genuineathletics in 2018 the improvements to this mans’ mind, body and spirit have been remarkable along with learning the importance of quality nutrition and how to make better choices when out with clients at restaurants. Almost every other international sporting league, including FIFA, the International Cricket Council and the International Amateur Athletic Federation, echoed the ban until the South African government ended the apartheid system.⁠ ⁠ The IOC should take a similar step now, and move the 2022 Games out of Beijing.⁠ ⁠ In a letter to IOC President Thomas Bach last October, I outlined the Chinese Communist Party’s numerous human rights abuses, including attacks on free speech, detention of international journalists, the imprisonment of more than 1 million Uighurs (an ethnic and religious minority in Western China), the sinister surveillance of citizens and tyrannical actions against citizens of Hong Kong.⁠ ⁠ Bach responded to me by saying the IOC must remain “politically neutral.” Without referring specifically to Beijing, he doubled down on his stance against boycotts in a speech in July, criticizing the “misuse of sport for political purposes.”⁠ ⁠ Since I first wrote to the IOC, the human rights situation in China has only worsened. The challenges of teaching physical education completely online are daunting. We all know that it’s unrealistic to think that this delivery method is optimal for a subject matter that relies so much on physical cueing/correcting and accountability. That being said, we all have to adapt and focus on how to best serve our students - so today I started filming.... LOTS of filming 😂 My goal The first week or two is to try (as best I can) to teach my students in my KPEA 103 (cardio cross training) classes movement prep, mobility, activation, warm-up, and readying - this is our first learning module and one that will serve as EDD’s (every day drills) for these students. Most people in LA get stabbed by a knife & end up at the Trauma Center @harborucla_em My husband, Nick, was stabbed by his surfboard while surfing 🏄🏼 in Manhattan Beach in 2016. When the paramedic called me from Nick’s phone in the back of the ambulance, I was working at Malibu Urgent Care. When I work at urgent care, I get a mental break because no one dies- as opposed to my ER shifts. My husband had other plans for my day. I asked the paramedic, “Does he meet trauma center criteria for vital signs OR injury?” There was a pause & then he said “Both” 😱 I hate surfboard fins, why are they so f-ing sharp?! What is the point? It’s not like you take them out to cut a steak 🥩after your surf session! I have seen over a dozen surf fin injuries, many horrific depending on the location of the flesh they rip into. This was one of them. He had stabbed a branch of his femoral artery & the blood was running under his wetsuit onto his foot. A bystander ran to get the lifeguard who started wiping his left foot & Nick redirected them “It’s on my thigh.” He pulled off his wetsuit to expose his birthday suit & a 4 inch wound on his left inner thigh. A tourniquet was placed & he was driven by lights & sirens 🚨 to @harborucla_em The ER doctors controlled the bleeding & he continued to have fluid resuscitation. He was quickly escorted to radiology for a CT scan with IV contrast which localized the source of bleeding. His next stop was the operating room with trauma surgeon, Dr. Brant A. Putman 👨🏼‍⚕️ I arrived after the surgery was complete. One year later he attended the Trauma Survivor Celebration. I made sure to bring gifts to the lifeguards, fire department, ER & surgeons thanking them for saving his life. I honestly wish my friends & family would stop providing me so much content! I would tag my husband, but he is not on social media. This morning, the Peel Police Services board asked Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah to begin the process of implementing body cameras for the Peel Police Service. Any action taken must preseve public trust but also ensure that our officers can do their jobs effectively “The Police Services Board and Peel Regional Police have received comments and requests for body worn cameras from members of the community and elected officials in Peel. Thomas Murphy was sentenced to eight and one-third to 25 years in prison for the death of Andrew McMorris. McMorris, 12, was hiking along a Manorville road when an intoxicated Murphy struck and killed him. Murphy was found guilty on all counts back in December.
