If you ever have an opportunity to use your #privilege to speak up for people, do that. We almost all have some form of privelege, either because of our age, our gender, our location, our job, our education, etc. Always use it to speak up for people if the situation arises. The migrant families in cages and left in destabilized parts of the world, couldnt speak to millions on their own behalf, to make their case - but I could, so I did. Its challenging working in media because you cant just go off on some unrelated diatribe, as that would be inappropriate. Its a topics driven industry, whether on-air or in print. Thankfully, this was the topic on the table, it was totally appropriate and I had an opportunity to use the facts to speak up for people who were being wronged. Always do that. . . If this isnt my favorite moment on TV so far, its for sure in my top 5. What a year its been. Today marks one year since rugby legend, @gareththomasofficial spoke publicly about living with HIV for the first time. Ive been living with this secret for years, Ive felt shame and keeping such a big secret has taken its toll. I was in a dark place, feeling suicidal. I thought about driving off a cliff. In an emotional video he posted online, Gareth pledged to fight to educate and to break the stigma. Hes done just that. Within days of Gareths announcement, we saw a surge in people clicking on our website to get information about HIV and a jump in orders for HIV tests. We were so proud to support Gareth that day in September when the eyes of the nation were on him as he smashed the IronMan Wales challenge, proving HIV doesnt hold you back from living life to the full. In the last 12 months, Gareth has teamed up with the Duke of Sussex to encourage more people to know their HIV status, taken an active role in the fight to end new HIV transmissions by 2030, oh and sat on that famous black chair on Mastermind to raise money to support the work of us at Terrence Higgins Trust!
