As we come into spring our rescue service is going to become busier and busier. The female flying foxes are getting to the later stages of their pregnancies and are going to start getting into trouble as they try to find enough food to feed themselves and their baby. We thought it would be a good idea to do a ‘Wildlife Friendly Gardens’ series. So over the next 6 weeks we will be doing a post on a way you can make your property safer for not only bats, but all of our native wildlife. Our first post is a 2 part post on our pets and how we can care for them more responsibly. We would like to start by saying that we love our pets, most of our rehabilitators and rescuers have pet cats and dogs. This is not an anti pet post, we just want to have a discussion. This first part is on dogs. Dog attacks are one of our most common reasons for flying fox rescue and the survival for these flying foxes is incredibly low. Now these are not mean or aggressive dogs, they are lovely family dogs doing what comes naturally to them. It’s our responsibility to ensure they don’t have the opportunity to hurt wildlife. The easiest and most effective solution is to let your dog sleep inside the house at night. This is becoming more and more common and is by far the best way to make your garden safe for nocturnal wildlife. The second way is to secure your dog in an internal yard or smaller fenced area during the night so they have less access to your garden. This is less effective but at least leaves a safe corridor for wildlife to move through your property. Dogs are lovely pets but they can be devastating for local wildlife if not kept responsibly. Additionally, dogs are one of the main reasons for koala fatalities which predominantly occur at night. So keeping your dogs in at night not only helps bats, but koalas as well! Thankfully this pair beat the statistics with Stella sustaining very serious but viable injuries from the dog. Baby Karen and her wonky little ear are doing amazing ❤️ she is still an angel 😇 Steve has settled down abit but still has to be fed first because he is still a hangry boy 😂 GeeGee has always been quiet, she is abit of a messy eater and likes to get her little hands involved and splash the milk 😁 Pugsley with the squashed nose is coping alot better, hes very slow to feed but once he gets going hes a trooper 👏 And darling teeny tiny Runty maybe small but shes always the first out and most adventurous. All babies now have their eyes open and some have their ears out now too. They are definitely growing and getting fluffier as their coats come in. So far apart from being hard work and driving me abit batty they are all thriving and doign exactly what they should be. Wildlife Rescue in the Daintree: our latest arrival is a fully grown male Eastern tube-nosed bat (Nyctimene Robinsoni) found on the ground in Port Douglas and delivered to Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas before being passed to us. No broken bones or obvious injury (apart from an abraded swollen right wrist) but treating for possible variables such as infection, cat attack or collision - with hydration, anti-inflammatories and antibiotics. Baby kiwi photo spam! Please welcome little Bloom who hatched at Rotorua’s National Kiwi Hatchery on Tuesday 29 September, weighing in at 353 grams. Bloom has a rare white patch and has arrived in time to celebrate the start of Save Kiwi Month. The name was drawn at random on TVNZ’s Breakfast show this morning and is a tribute to Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield. The National Kiwi Hatchery reopened to manuhiri late last month in time for the school holidays, with adjusted opening times and discounted entry. The Ngāi Tahu Tourism-owned hatchery had been closed to visitors since the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown. All money from hatchery tour ticket sales goes back to fund the hatchery’s work. So, by visiting and entertaining yourselves or your tamariki for a few hours, you are directly supporting its work to save kiwi. Visitors to the hatchery may get a glimpse of Bloom on the daily 10.00am tour as the bird will have their daily weigh in and health check at that time. Lazarus and his brother were the first two rats Ive ever known and loved, even though our time together was so short. Lazarus and his brother were found in the dirt, covered with cockroaches. Never a dull moment! Our coworker’s mom found a baby opossum in her yard this morning while a cat was trying to get it. She saw the momma opossum with her babies last night as she was just walking by. It appears one of the babies fell off the mom and the mom has not returned for it all night. It was disheveled, dirty and hungry. Our coworker picked up the baby from her mom and took it to our local nature center. They will introduce him to other orphan opossums they currently have and release them when they are ready! You should always wait to take any wildlife baby in if it appears alone. Many times the mom is close by. But given the immediate danger this baby was in and over 12 hours of not being with its mom, it was best to take it to a nature center where they have trained rehabilitators who will care for him and release him once he grows up a little and is able to take care of himself. If you’re unsure what to do with any wildlife animal that seems so be injured or left behind, please contact your local nature center before taking the animal. - Thankfully the dogs let us know about this guy trying to move into our detached garage. Of all the opossums I’ve dealt with, I was ready for a fight but this one was wonderfully calm. He’s now relocated & hopefully getting fat on ticks.
