Torontos Past Preserved: No better way to end this look at Wellesley St than a visit to the Paul Kane house at 56 Wellesley. The house that Torontonians saved. Built in 1853, it was home to Paul Kane a well know Toronto based, Canadian travelling artist. He built this cottage in his later years as he settled down while having a studio on King St. The house was owned by the family until 1903. It became a church hall for those who were hearing impaired. from 1925-73. The church built a large building in front of the house, effectively blocking it and well was hidden away for so long. When a developer bought the lot, they tore down the church building and discovered the Kane House. With neighbors who wanted the poor condition house demolished, Toronto preservation groups fought back and won !!! The city bough the property with help from the province. A park was built and the house was renovated. The house was included in o a new housing co-op in 1985. Since we’ve had a little snow, and a lot of really cold weather the last week or so, for #throwbackthursday here’s an appropriate winter photo from the late 1950’s. We lived in this trailer in Reading when I was born, until we moved to an apartment in Price Hill when I was 6 years old. Note the TV antenna - no cable or satellite TV back in those days! (Three channels - 5, 9, and 12. Sometime later, 19 and 48 came along - but it would be awhile!) That’s our 57 Chevy station wagon to the right of our trailer. #tbt - @repstevechabot on Instagram

This is one of the favorite family stories from the Stuart Flooring days: In the late 80s, Stuart Flooring needed a boiler to be able to fire the kilns and dry the lumber before it was milled into strip flooring. One morning, Buddy and a few helpers drove deep into West Virginia in search of a deal on this old boiler you see in the photo. Once purchased, the problem then became how were they going to get it home? Well, about the only option of getting out of the mountains of West Virginia is by truck. So, they hired a local truck driver who had a lowboy trailer to come and load up the boiler. They cut the boiler away from its foundation and jacked it up in the air so the lowboy could slide under the boiler. Then they actually welded the boiler to the trailer. At this point, it was getting late into the evening and the crew still wasnt sure how the truck driver was going to get this thing over the highways and under the bridges between Stuart and West Virginia. When they mentioned it to the driver, he said, now dont you worry about that, and told them hed see them in the morning back in Stuart. Buddy and the crew drove home that night. Sure enough, when they came to work the next morning at 6:00 AM, the driver, the lowboy, and the boiler were all waiting on them at the gate to Stuart Flooring. They unloaded the lowboy, didnt ask any questions, and the truck driver went on home, back to West Virginia. - @tenoaksflooring on Instagram

“Somos La Luz Memorial” (2020) #CoronaPark (Flushing, #Queens #NYC ) . .Chapter 3. ... This project is an homage to Hispanic caregivers that risk their lives to save others. It highlights their contribution while at the same time calling for action. These are the people that make our city move, the people that care for us, these are the people that contribute socially, culturally and economically to the nation. They are part of this “American Experiment”, just like all the waves of immigration that came before them. In the year 2020, where hindsight should not be clearer, it is amazing to me that we must continue to ask ourselves…how it is that minorities today still have to suffer the same injustices of the minorities of the past. As an artist, I am committed to bringing attention to social issues that need to be addressed. The large-scale works that I have created around the world all convey that we need to come together to make the world a better place. The size of my large-scale works is directly related to the importance of the theme. This artwork “Somos La Luz” strives to give deeper meaning to the loss of each life, it strives to make evident the importance of every life as well as to value the amazing contribution of migrant people. I am honored to have an amazing team helping me to create this 40,000 sq ft land art mural Memorial. Today we helped to rescue and distribute more than four pallets of food from four different locations and helped distribute them to fridges throughout the city. We do not purchase food. We reclaim food that’s good to eat, but if not for us would be discarded and wasted. An organizer saw a distribution warehouse regularly trashing tons of good produce that maybe wasn’t fresh enough to make it to a grocery store and then to a home without becoming ripe along the way. This organizer spoke to the workers and offered to get the food directly to people who could use it through community fridges. This is one way that we keep our communities well supplied with healthy fruits and vegetables! Thanks to @thegowanusfridge for being such amazing partners in this effort, and coordinate so many drivers. Nach dem Verkauf aller Verwaltungsgebäude in Heidelberg war die Print Media Academy am Hauptbahnhof das letzte Heidelberger Gebäude im Besitz von Heideldruck. Doch was geschieht nun mit der Print Media Academy, die mit ihrem stählernen Pferd vielen Reisenden, die am Heidelberger Hauptbahnhof angekommen, ein beeindruckendes Bild bietet? „Alle Optionen liegen auf dem Tisch“, zitiert die RNZ einen Unternehmenssprecher von Heideldruck. Auch ein Verkauf könne sich das Unternehmen vorstellen. Die Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG hatte das gläserne Gebäude erst vor drei Jahren gekauft und zuvor jahrelang gemietet. Even with the states on pause, projects at HUNT are still on track, including the design of the Huntington Building in Seneca Falls. The historic 1870s era building was recently purchased by Home Leasing, who hired our team to restore and renovate it into 21st century apartments. The 50 units are designed with the original building in mind, utilizing its existing architectural features while adding modern amenities. Restoring the Huntington extends Seneca Falls walkability and paves the way for further development of the area. Although what happened overnight set in motion the events of the following day, the greatest losses started in the early morning hours of June 1st. The gun battle that lasted throughout the night kept immediate threats to black Tulsa at bay but by daybreak the tables started to turn in the most disastrous way. Many Greenwood citizens either fled for safety or were defending their property until being outnumbered by the oncoming mob. Some escaped unharmed while others who peacefully surrendered were still shot. Police and National Guard began taking the remaining blacks into protective custody but in the process left Greenwood vulnerable to all out attack. As the white mob marched into Greenwood from all sides, their mission seemed clear: after looting the properties, they were to be set on fire. This was repeated until 40 blocks of Tulsa was reduced to rubble and ash. *These photographs were taken on June 1, 1921. I will be sharing more of these in an exhibit called “21 for ‘21” opening January 1, 2021 at @bws.gallery . The exhibition will showcase 21 composite images from the 1921 #tulsaracemassacre. They assist with moving locomotives in and out of the museum for display or during times of museum projects, and to and from the Shops for excursion rides, repairs, and such. When we went in the building, the basement had a foot of ice, which was slowly melting.
