El Monte Legion Stadium - Originally built in 1927 as the gymnasium for the old El Monte High School campus , the stadium is most famous for hosting the dances that would serve as inspiration for the song “Memories of El Monte” written by Frank Zappa and performed by The Penguins. The stadium remained mostly unused once the new El Monte High campus opened on Tyler Ave. and welcomed the class of 1940. The American Legion purchased the stadium in 1945 and renamed it “El Monte Legion Stadium” From 1945 through the mid 1950’s the stadium hosted a wide range of events: basket ball games, wrestling, boxing, roller derby’s, and even mini car races. The stadium reached the apex of it’s popularity when legendary disc Jockey Art Laboe brought his Oldies But Goodies dances to El Monte. At the time city ordinances and regulations in Los Angeles did not allow large gatherings of young people under the age of 18. The stadium was a perfect venue, close enough to Los Angeles but outside of the city limits and not subject to Los Angeles ordinances. Art Laboe’s dances at the Legion we’re extremely popular. Crowds of young people from different backgrounds and ethnicities from all over the southland were brought together by their love of dancing and music. Some notable acts that performed at the stadium: Jerry Lee Lewis, The Penguins, Rosie and The Originals, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, and Richie Valens. By the 1960’s The young crowds moved on the the booming sunset strip and Los Angeles proper. The stadium remained in operation hosting smaller events. In 1973 the US Postal Service purchased the stadium property to build a new post office. The stadium was torn down on Friday the 13th 1974. The Union Walk townhome development currently sits at the former site of the stadium at Valley and Ramona Blvd. A small fountain and plaque in front of the development memorializes the history that the Stadium made in EL Monte. - @elmonte.captured on Instagram

We Love this blast from the past photo! Arlington future with stadiums and entertainment goes way back. This picture is of the Turnpike Stadium prior to opening in 1965 as a minor league baseball stadium with 10,000 seat capacity. The Fort Worth Cats of the Texas League moved there as the Dallas-Fort Worth Spurs, and played there for the next seven years, setting many Texas League attendance records, especially after it expanded to 20,500 seats in 1970. It was built to @mlb specs at the time to attract a major league team. In 1971 the then Washington Senators announced their move to Arlington Texas and the rest is history! Only a select few have ever won both Meguiar’s People’s choice and #Summernats Grand Champion in the same year. They are; Peter Fitzpatrick, Aaron Fitzpatrick, Mick Fabar and Ben Sargent - with this ultra-slick 1971 HQ #Monaro. This was the coupe’s third rebuild, with the previous incarnation dominating the Summernats Street category for a number of years – included taking out Street King and Top Judged Street at Summernats 14. Two years later, Ben pulled the car off the road for an exhaustive five-year, full-elite build – mostly completed in his home garage with the help of some dedicated mates. Debuted as part of the Great Meguiar’s Uncover at Summernats 23 (2010), Ben then spent an additional two years improving the finish and presentation of the already Top 10 car. In 2012, it returned to take out the People’s Choice/Grand Champion double header. Winning Meguiar’s Peoples Choice had a lot to do with Ben grabbing the Grand Champion sword, as he only beat out the storming, six-time Grand Champion, Peter Fitzpatrick by one solitary point! Mechanically, the Monaro runs a #Holden V8 stroked to 327ci, M21 four-speed manual, and completely smoothed over 9in diff – all rolling on Intro billet wheels. Inside was wall-to-wall leather complete with flat floor and custom-made dash filed with aftermarket gauges. {September 27th, 1948 -- First TV station in Texas goes on the air} On this day in 1948, WBAP-Fort Worth became the first television station in Texas--and indeed in the whole South--to go on the air, carrying a speech by President Harry Truman. The station grew out of Fort Worths first radio station, also called WBAP, established in 1922 by Amon Carter, owner of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. By 1950 six TV stations were operating in Texas, including three in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. In the early 1950s stations in San Antonio and Fort Worth began broadcasting live programs by use of coaxial cable. In 1953 four major television networks served Texas: the American Broadcasting Company (ABC), Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS), National Broadcasting Company (NBC), and Dumont. In that year network broadcasting was made possible across the state via Bell Telephone System facilities. This is a photo of the Ethanac Cash Store in the Ethanac community, which was named for Ethan Alan Chase a citrus grower in the area. Later the name was changed to Romoland to accurately reflect its proximity to the Ramola Farms community. A small sign shows it was also the post office and perhaps the small sign on the left is for a telegraph office, since the Menifee Siding was nearby at the railroad tracks. #menifeehistory - @menifeehistory on Instagram
