In wake of recent enlightenment, the CDC has confirmed that 94% percent of all COVID deaths in the United States were a result of chronic underlying disease and poor health... NOT the actual virus in isolation. While these individuals did indeed test positive for COVID, their actual causes of death were connected to on average 2-3 additional underlying health conditions! Why is the United States suffering some of the highest case and death rates on the planet? What if we replaced our focused energy to wear a mask and instead collectively changed our diets? As I sat here this evening, watching my best friend get her evening run in, I got the opportunity to just sit and think... all by myself.. something, even with COVID-19, I rarely ever do. I just really think that thereโs so much more to running, powerlifting, bodybuilding, playing sports, learning to play a musical instrument, schooling, and anything else that comes with hardship. I think it all ties in with the word ENDURE. Whether weโre actually talking about endurance sports or not, there are multiple times in a personโs life when they must endure something that is causing them physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual stress. In order to move through these challenges and come out on the other side as a stronger human being, we must ENDURE this pain or stress. I think this is the exact reason why I love competing so much.. and itโs not so much the competition and outcome that i fall in love with but the process. Itโs the constant enduring through practice, constant repetition, and eagerness to learn more that it takes to develop a particular skill or talent that may not come natural. By constantly putting things in our lives that require ENDURANCE, physically, mentally, emotionally, or spiritually, we become more immune to the things in life that we canโt control but still must ENDURE. On another note, I finished 5th out of 158 runners in my 10 mile trail race today, consisting of an elevation change of more than 2,000 feet. Not yet where i want to be but constantly moving in that direction! I encourage everyone out there to find something that requires them to endure just a little bit of stress every single day. I promise you it will make a difference in your every day life. Also, thank you to Taylor and @kellypbeane for the continuous support and love. We canโt do anything in life entirely on our own. I took it about 12 years ago on a 5 megapixel camera. I still remember to this day sitting down and trying to find a way to force the camera to have a longer exposure time. El Monte Legion Stadium - Originally built in 1927 as the gymnasium for the old El Monte High School campus , the stadium is most famous for hosting the dances that would serve as inspiration for the song โMemories of El Monteโ written by Frank Zappa and performed by The Penguins.โฃ โฃ The stadium remained mostly unused once the new El Monte High campus opened on Tyler Ave. and welcomed the class of 1940. โฃ โฃ The American Legion purchased the stadium in 1945 and renamed it โEl Monte Legion Stadiumโโฃ โฃ From 1945 through the mid 1950โs the stadium hosted a wide range of events: basket ball games, wrestling, boxing, roller derbyโs, and even mini car races. โฃ โฃ โฃ The stadium reached the apex of itโs popularity when legendary disc Jockey Art Laboe brought his Oldies But Goodies dances to El Monte. โฃ โฃ At the time city ordinances and regulations in Los Angeles did not allow large gatherings of young people under the age of 18. The stadium was a perfect venue, close enough to Los Angeles but outside of the city limits and not subject to Los Angeles ordinances. โฃ โฃ Art Laboeโs dances at the Legion weโre extremely popular. Crowds of young people from different backgrounds and ethnicities from all over the southland were brought together by their love of dancing and music. โฃ โฃ Some notable acts that performed at the stadium: Jerry Lee Lewis, The Penguins, Rosie and The Originals, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, and Richie Valens.โฃ โฃ By the 1960โs The young crowds moved on the the booming sunset strip and Los Angeles proper. The stadium remained in operation hosting smaller events.โฃ โฃ In 1973 the US Postal Service purchased the stadium property to build a new post office. Who was Cyrus Peirce and why is there a school named for him? He was not a Nantucketer, although he is buried in Prospect Hill Cemetery next to his island-born wife Harriet Coffin. Peirce, born in Waltham, came to the island after graduating from Harvard in 1810. Peirce took a teaching job only to earn enough money to return to Harvard to study for the ministry; he had no intention of remaining a teacher. After two years on the island, Peirce returned to Harvard and qualified for the ministry. However, after three years of study, the twenty-six-year-old, he returned to Nantucket and married twenty-two-year-old Harriet Coffin. In 1831, they opened their second school on island, noted for its progressive approach. Peirce offered free night classes, open to sailors, black, white, foreign and native born, who had not had the opportunity of an education. They hired sixteen-year old Maria Mitchell as an assistant. Their school became so well-known that Horace Mann, the first Secretary of Education in Massachusetts, observed the school and recruited Cyrus to serve on a state-wide committee to examine school libraries. Peirce became an active member of the island community. He and Harriet were among the founders of Nantucketโs Anti-Slavery Society and life-long champions of civil rights. They joined the Second Congregational Church which had become Unitarian. Cyrus was the president of the Education Society; its mission was to persuade Nantucket to fund a public high school. We hit the drive-in this past weekend! And, it was a blast. We pre-ordered takeout lobster rolls from @millhousebrewingco (fyi, they are AMAZING!) and settled in to watch JAWS on the big screen. Later in life, Sybil lost their eyesight; but hearing us, feeling us, smelling us, Sybil purred, that endless, warm purr, and expressed love for us. Here is a new story Ive written about a railroad crossing at Water Street in Fairport. It has been out of commission for over sixty years, for good reason. Treacherous Railroad Crossing Closed in 1959 By Bill Poray, Perinton Town Historian Accidents at Fairport railroad crossings were far more common in the days prior to automatic signals and gates, activated when a train approaches the crossing. Over sixty years ago, a dangerous railroad crossing was eliminated in Fairport. Since the 1880s, the crossing allowed pedestrians, horse-drawn wagons and carriages, and later, cars and trucks, to pass over the railroad tracks at Water Street. The crossing, just north of Donnelleyโs Public House, the old Green Tavern, was removed in August of 1959, and for a good reason. It was a menace to safety. At the time, there was much debate regarding the benefits of replacing railroad employees functioning as crossing guards with automatic gates. A 1957 traffic study recorded 86 trains - 47 passenger and 39 freight trains, passed through the village of Fairport in a 24-hour period. According to testimony at a hearing before the Public Service Commission in Albany in 1957, the maximum speed of trains passing through Fairport was recorded at โ50 miles per hour for freight, and 80 miles per hour for main line passenger trains.โ In the case of the Water Street crossing, 750 feet east of North Main Street, pedestrians and vehicle traffic were on their own. There was no crossing guard or gates of any kind. On a snowy day in February of 1941, a fast-moving eastbound train originating from Chicago approached the village of Fairport. Just seconds after crossing Main Street, it slammed into an automobile operated by Adrian Zonneville, traveling south on Water Street, killing the driver. A page-one report of the accident in the Fairport Herald-Mail stated, โThis crossing is guarded in no way, either by a watchman, flasher, or gates.โ The crossing at Water Street included five sets of tracks, and a siding, meaning vehicles and pedestrians were required to travel a distance of 80 feet or more to cross all the tracks. This is a photo of the Ethanac Cash Store in the Ethanac community, which was named for Ethan Alan Chase a citrus grower in the area. Later the name was changed to Romoland to accurately reflect its proximity to the Ramola Farms community. Although what happened overnight set in motion the events of the following day, the greatest losses started in the early morning hours of June 1st. The gun battle that lasted throughout the night kept immediate threats to black Tulsa at bay but by daybreak the tables started to turn in the most disastrous way. Many Greenwood citizens either fled for safety or were defending their property until being outnumbered by the oncoming mob. Some escaped unharmed while others who peacefully surrendered were still shot. Police and National Guard began taking the remaining blacks into protective custody but in the process left Greenwood vulnerable to all out attack. As the white mob marched into Greenwood from all sides, their mission seemed clear:ย after looting the properties, they were to be set on fire. This was repeated until 40 blocks of Tulsa was reduced to rubble and ash. *These photographs were taken on June 1, 1921. I will be sharing more of these in an exhibit called โ21 for โ21โ opening January 1, 2021 at @bws.gallery . The exhibition will showcase 21 composite images from the 1921 #tulsaracemassacre. {September 27th, 1948 -- First TV station in Texas goes on the air} On this day in 1948, WBAP-Fort Worth became the first television station in Texas--and indeed in the whole South--to go on the air, carrying a speech by President Harry Truman. The station grew out of Fort Worths first radio station, also called WBAP, established in 1922 by Amon Carter, owner of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. By 1950 six TV stations were operating in Texas, including three in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. In the early 1950s stations in San Antonio and Fort Worth began broadcasting live programs by use of coaxial cable. When we went in the building, the basement had a foot of ice, which was slowly melting.
