Google Maps has removed images from the summit of Uluru, after Australia’s national parks body raised concerns over the fact that people were using street view to “walk” on top of the sacred Indigenous site. Visitors were banned from physically climbing the rock in October 2019 out of respect for the wishes of Uluru’s traditional owners, the Aṉangu people, for whom it has spiritual significance. But until the afternoon of September 23, people could still use Google Maps’ street view function to take a virtual walking tour up the now-closed walking track to the top of the rock, where user-generated photos would give them 360-degree photos of the summit. A spokesperson for Parks Australia told the ABC on Thursday that the government body had alerted Google Australia to the user-generated images from the Uluru summit that have been posted on their mapping platform and “requested that the content be immediately removed in accordance with the wishes of Aṉangu, Ulurus traditional owners, and the national parks Film and Photography Guidelines. World Rhino Day is celebrated each year on September 22nd, providing an opportunity to work toward continuing to save the species which has been the target of poaching for decades. Although still facing great threat, the southern White Rhino represents one of the greatest recovery stories in all of Africa. This rhino species was nearly extinct in the 1900s, with only 30 individuals surviving. As a result of increased value derived from sustainable use, the species has made an amazing recovery to more than 20,000 today. According to IUCN’s Sustainable Use and Livelihoods Specialist Group, “Not only has rhino hunting clearly been sustainable, it has played an integral part in the recovery of these species.” Join SCIF in the fight to ensure their continued survival. It’s baaaaaaack! Like, is someone just desperate to unload some old gondola equipment or something? This bad idea was floating around Dodger Stadium for a bit. Then it came to Griffith Park as a tourist trap to make money. Then it was pitched as a way to alleviate foot traffic around the Hollywoodland neighborhood. And now it’s being pitched as a transportation system, even though it doesn’t connect to any mass transit. . What this is is a toy. An expensive and destructive toy we have no use for. There is no necessary function that can’t be done in ways that are cheaper, significantly more efficient, and significantly less destructive both to the wildlife habitat of Griffith Park and the many ways we humans enjoy the park, too. If you’re a hiker, equestrian, jogger, cyclist, golfer, birder, photographer, resident, or even just like hanging out at Travel Town or Amir’s Garden or the Zoo, this dumb idea would forever degrade your experience in LA’s largest green space. . Los Angeles needs MORE parkland in more places. It does not need to sacrifice what precious little we do have to build a toy. . Population of Elephants around the World is dropping every year at a rate of around 8% every year. With the prime reason of their decline being -: 1). Poaching and Hunting. 2). Extensive Habitat Loss. There were around 3 million elephants alone in the African continent but continuous Poaching and Hunting due to the Billion $ ivory industry has declined their population severely to around 415,000 just in the last 60-70 years. The elephants found in Asia have been reduced to just 40,000 to 50,000 in the last 50 years which is a more than 50% drastic population drop!! Such intense decrease in the population of the Elephants in the last 60-70 years has resulted the Elephants to become an endangered species.
