••• Last summer, Europe 40 Under 40 Award winning practice @melikealtinisik proposed an installation called Achrome[scape] at ‘To be Concrete’ Architecture Summer School by Betonart. Achrome[scape] is redefining the concrete as a material, which reveals the natural power of concrete and invites us to rethink the underestimated hidden beauty of concrete. Achrome describes an empty space with non-linear and colorless. The color of the Achrome is nature and the material is concrete. In Latin, morphê stands for “form” and ”genesis” means “formation”. The formation process of the design involves a holistic diversification from micro-macro to different-scale material types and to the settlement organization of units. A total of 158 units, all of which are made of a single white cell concrete, are based on various forms of the formation to make the boundaries pass across. To create a design that was dissolved in the soil, which was born out of the soil and approached to the smoothness of the sky, the material was transformed into the art of existence by using thinner aggregated concrete. The designer @melikealtinisik describes her installation; “Concrete is the perfect material for studying the design of nature itself to the corresponding rollback step by step towards nature. For those of you not living in Melbourne, I can tell you that the weather here today is winter at its best. Cold, wet and the sky isn’t even grey it’s a bright white, the type of weather where one can only dream of past memories and exciting adventures. To me it’s this sort of weather that always brings on thoughts of the being in the Dandenong’s. Growing up there as a child I’m convinced looking back that it rained on a constant basis, and as children we didn’t care as much about getting wet when wandering through the rain as I do now. The thought of getting out in this weather (even if we could) doesn’t even enter my mind. I always think of Alfred Nicholas Gardens as being a perfect cold winters day retreat, and enjoy all the walks the beautiful garden has to offer. I see so many posts on Instagram of the beautiful yet eerie old boat shed, I don’t think it’s in the least bit eerie in person, it’s merely the photos that portray it in such a way. I’ve often wanted to post a photo of the boat shed myself, but as you can see my personal memories of this location far out weigh the spectacular images seen in my head. However it’s a cold Melbourne day and we are all in iso so I thought I would share one of our adventures to Alfred Nicholas Gardens, which we took at the start of July 2019 with you all. I can’t not mention Burnham Beeches, the superb Artdeco mansion which is located at the top of the gardens. It was built in 1933, and renovated in the 1980’s which added an additional two adjoining buildings. It’s extremely elaborate and always has me looking on at it in awe of its magnificence, it always reminds me of a huge ocean ship. Last I heard the hotels rooms, had all been stripped and were to be transformed into Australia’s first 6 star accommodation. I think there is strong concern for what a large development such as this, would do to the integrity of the beautiful Dandenong Ranges. I’m interested to watch and wait to see what comes of this. On this day in 1942, the Rohwer Concentration Camp was opened in Arkansas. On this site, approximately 8,475 Japanese Americans would be incarcerated in the Deep South. That being said, the incarcerees would be forced to face the harsh weather that comes with being imprisoned in a swamp. It was due to these conditions that it was not unheard of for the camp to flood. Aside from avoiding the swarms of mosquitos, the incarcerees of Rohwer found ways to keep themselves occupied.
