For the last week, I’ve been been living in Seattle’s Capitol Hill Occupied Protest (CHOP, formerly Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone/CHAZ) and wanted to take this time to shed some light on what’s actually been going down here, as opposed to what you may have read/seen in mainstream media outlets as well as the rampant misinformation being spread on social media by people who aren’t here, have only stopped through, or have ulterior motives to discredit CHOP. - First, CHOP is not a violent or militaristic zone. It’s a thriving, peaceful community, one based around the idea of envisioning a world without police and their abuses of power. There are kitchens, gardens, support groups, reading groups, a safe space for the houseless, and arts being practiced in it. There are medics to tend to the needs of its citizens, and security trained simply to de-escalate and keep the peace. CHOP is under constant threats from white supremacists, right-wingers and SPD who do not want to see it succeed. This is where the need for defense comes in. If this is a war, it’s one started by white supremacists who do not want us to have our peace. There has been no “extortion of businesses”. There is no “checking” of IDs or anything else at the barricades. Anyone is allowed in. The nature of CHOP is not exclusionary. CHOP has a great relationship with the businesses and residents of the area as well as the local firehouse and private security for businesses in the area. - Another notion I’d like to dispel is that CHOP is white anarchists “capitalizing” on the George Floyd protests and co-opting it. CHOP leadership is entirely black, with a diverse group of ideologies and experiences. This is a space started in order to address and dismantle systemic racism and white supremacy, to establish a zone free of policing where we can protect and serve our own community, and learn from each other as we build that community. “Black Lives” and the continued fight for liberation are the driving ideas behind it. The demands of this protest, laid out by black leadership, are clear and can be found all over CHOP: defund police by 50%, re-invest that money in black communities, and freedom for protestors. - @_xanaxl_rose_2000 on Instagram

Often time its the things you dont see. Detective Specialist Stuart Barksdale came across an elderly female whose wheelchair battery ran empty before she was able to get home. Stu pushed her for several blocks to get her home safe and sound. Stu didnt know he was being photographed, nor did he ask for this to be brought to the publics attention. And this post isnt about a pat on the back for Stu or the #YonkersPD, but rather to highlight that the vast majority of police officers serve their communities and do the right thing every day and night, irregardless if anyone is watching. 🛢 HOW TO BUILD A DA VINCI ARCH ON A CLIMATE CRIME SCENE 🛢 As 2 weeks of nationally-coordinated rebellion drew to a close last Thursday, we blockaded the London offices of Schlumberger, the self-described worlds leading oilfield services provider. Schlumberger does not own any oil or gas fields, instead using its 36,000 patented technologies to help all of the major international oil companies to drain every last drop from theirs, and then search across the globe for more. With revenues in the billions, it can be found in more than 120 countries – with examples like Saudi Arabia, Turkmenistan, Myanmar and Libya indicating that its claim of conducting business in a manner that preserves and respects human dignity is at best a very creative interpretation of the facts. It also doesnt shy away from the industrys most harmful and controversial technologies, including deep-sea drilling, arctic exploration, tar sands, fracking and re-fracking. It might come as a surprise that a massive, planet-killing company like this is largely unheard of. However, Schlumbergers business practices – such as its tangled international web of subsidiaries, incorporation in the offshore tax haven Curaçao, and (in contrast to its competitors) shunning of political donations and lobbying – suggest that this may not be an accident. Despite its low profile, Schlumberger is infamous to us. This year, we have blockaded the Schlumberger Gould Research Centre 3 times – resulting in 9 arrests – to draw attention not only to Schlumbergers role in environmental destruction, but also to its close links to the University of Cambridge. These include: the Schlumberger Professorship of Complex Physical Systems, the Schlumberger Cambridge International Scholarship, and the fact that the research centre in question is located in the “high quality, well connected research environment” of the University’s own West Cambridge Site. Yesterday among curfews, unrest, National Guard and her boarded up closed @themarvista restaurant @jilliana.davie ventured down to #la to continue @losalamosdelivers. Since most orders were taken late last week before the brunt of this she decided to proceed delivering orders from @fulloflifefoods @bobswellbread and @hitchingpost2 to devoted and hungry customers. In all we had a single person not show and when reached by phone his street in Venice was blocked at both ends with protests. In the process Jill witnessed her own restaurant boarded up, overturned and burned cars, armoured vehicles, loads of helicopters and many truly grateful people. @losalamosdelivers was created on the fly by Thomas, Clark and Jill as a diversified outlet to continue doing what we all do: nourishing people (which is part of comforting people and continuing some sense of normalcy). We are committed to continue our efforts as long as we can viably make this sustainable. Jill and I gave up pay 14 weeks ago to get our businesses through this. #bts in between shots, stuck at the dont walk sign, I started talking to a woman who took an interest in what we were doing. It was out of the ordinary for a shoot to be casually strolling around that part of prospect park. In the same moment @elzamatiz has her photo taken by a bold young girl full of curiosity, the womans grand daughter. While she seemed a natural with the camera, I listened intently to every word of her grandmother and encouraged her creative spark. I dont think theres any way either of them will ever see this but Ill look back on this photograph for a long time and smile. I hope her photographs of elza came out well. I am grateful for being able to do what I do that allows me moments like these with curious people who want to explore the world around them rather than just exist in it. An adventurous heart. The girls have runny noses... need a negative test to return to daycare. I got in line at St Joes around 5:45am. Three people were ahead of me. By 6:30 there were 30 or so people. By 7 the line was out of sight. Joel dropped off kids at 7:45. Opened at 8. We were 30 mins. Make sure to bring a folding chair and snacks. It was colddddd in the morning. High recommend kid drop off towards the end if you can manage. Kudos to the mom who rolled up at 7:30 with her daughter and sat at the front of the line. @sfchronicle has published an article from Phil Matier with the clickbait headline: Shopping in SFs Tenderloin is wide open- for illegal drugs, that is Mr. Matier goes on to site @sfdph statistics, explaining that drug overdoses are a public health crisis, which is certainly accurate. He then makes an effort to convince his readers that more enforcement of street level drug sales crime and lengthier prison sentences for those convicted as the answer to the public health crisis directly impacting the least privileged and empowered in our city. He takes little time to inform us of who is responsible for the supply side of this equation, other than to tell us they are Honduran criminals who live in Oakland. This sentence from Mr. Matier is nakedly racist, anti-immigrant, and lazy journalism. He also quotes our newly elected DA, @chesaboudin, who paints a more complex picture without low hanging fruit solutions, although Mr. Matier chooses not to delve into these complexities in his editorializing.
