I’m on vacation and just finished the book „Loveless“ by @aliceoseman which is a self discovery Novel about an Ace-Aro girl and it inspired me to share some thoughts. I’m not Aro (and I never want to take up the space to talk for them), so I won’t nor can talk about that part of the book. But I am on the Ace Spectrum and there were moments in that book that I felt truly understood, pure joy. Moments of “not everyone is comfortable in these situations”, not everyone wants to have sex and that’s okay. Accepting them, joking, laughing about them. But there were also moments of pain I could share. Pressuring yourself into doing something sexual that you aren’t really comfortable with or not knowing how to get out of that situation. As well as being told my Identity isn’t valid. Growing up I didn’t know any ace (or aro) people (hell today I almost know none) and I always felt like i was alone, broken, that something was inherently wrong with me. My Sexuality is not just some „made-up internet Identity“ and I know that. I do have a space in the queer community, but sometimes It doesn’t feel like it. I have stories of Queer people telling me I don’t belong. I have stories of partners not truly understanding or accepting my boundaries and crossing them. I have stories of close friends telling me I’m a special snowflake for putting a label on something that is just normal (only having sexual attraction after a long/strong platonic or romantic bond and being Ace outside of that, was confused with being uptight or shy). And I’m not the only one, my girlfriend has similar, sometimes even worse stories - I’m Demi, sometimes I get the sex thing, I’m not always excluded, I had a girlfriend, I was somehow accepted as queer - she wasn’t. She’s Ace. And that sucks, it hurts. No-one should ever feel entitled to tell someone if their identity is valid or not, if they are queer enough or not. If you identify as queer, you are. That’s it. The majority of the Fresno City Council decided Thursday to send a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom to ask for permission to open indoor dining, and effectively killed a proposed approach to allow all businesses to open citywide. The letter’s supporters said it was the best way to work within the system and safely open restaurants and other businesses that are restricted under orders related to the coronavirus. The letter got a 5-2 approval from the council. Many businesses closed in March after local and state orders in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Remembering The Father of the Dravidian Movement on his Birth Anniversary today. Periyar E. V. Ramasamy was the founder of the Dravidiar Kazhagam established in 1944. A social movement that began before Independence, and later gave birth to many different political parties, was everything courageous and significant as it began with a vision to end the social evils of caste and untouchability, and battle the Brahminical dominance out of Southern India. Mr. Periyar encompassed his Self-Respect Movement within it to fight for gender equality as well. He knew the independence would bring a shift in power from the British to the Brahmin Elites and hence, adopted hard line approaches to change the system outright. The importance of his ideals and principles is inevitable after 73 years of independence when we are fighting the exact same battle even today. Pirandhanaal Vazhthukkal, Sir. New Government Restrictions Announced Six months after announcing the original Lockdown, Boris Johnson announced new restrictions to curb a second lockdown… Last night, Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, announced new restrictions which will last a further six-months and has warned the public to follow them to avoid a second national lockdown. The new restrictions include a 10pm enforced closing time for all pubs and restaurants, stricter rules on facemasks and a renewed ban on indoor sports which go alongside last weeks announcement of the ‘rule of six.’ Pubs and restaurants will be restricted by law to table service only, except for takeaways, and table bookings for more than six people are no longer allowed. Businesses can now be fined up to £10k if they take reservations over six and do not enforce social distancing or take diner’s contact details. Office staff will once again be urged to work from home where possible. Cabinet Minister, Michael Gove, said, “If you are in a COVID-secure workplace, then you should be there if your job requires it.” However, he also said otherwise, people should work at home. Unfortunately, from Monday the 28th of September, only 15 people will be able to attend weddings or civil partnerships, while funerals will be limited to 30 people. To enforce the rules, Johnson announced an increase in fines with a fine of £200 for the first offence now in force. He also said, “If people don’t follow the rules we have set out, then we must reserve the right to go further,” and, “Now is the time for us all to summon the discipline, and the resolve, and the spirit of togetherness that will carry us through.” Deaths from Covid-19 remain low - accounting for only 1% of deaths in England and Wales in the week to 11 September. But deaths are rising rather than falling for the first time since the beginning of April. And there are fears that rising numbers of patients in hospital will lead to more fatalities. The governments chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance, has warned there could be 50,000 new coronavirus cases a day by mid-October - leading to more than 200 deaths per day by mid-November - unless action is taken. “I have a family history of bowel cancer and was told to have a colonoscopy when I turned 40. At 39 I developed a lump on my chest. Knowing that men also get breast cancer I decided to have it checked out and my other checks early. The lump on my breast turned out to be a silly ingrown hair. My colonoscopy showed bowel cancer. Further tests also showed a kidney cancer. I had two separate primary cancers. About a month prior to my 40th birthday I had surgery that removed one kidney and my ascending colon. Both cancers where on the verge of breaking out but were contained. If I had waited as first planned, to well after my 40th birthday, I probably would not be alive today. Our Rose Haven guests are some of the most incredibly strong spirits, and Shirley is no different. Her resilient love for her daughter Kendra, her family, herself and her community is inspiring. Shirley started coming to Rose Haven in the 90’s and has participated in a transitional housing program, school supply drives, supply services, shopping program and she’s still involved with us through volunteering and continuing to build community with other women and folks. Shirley’s daughter Kendra was killed by Portland Police in 2003 and Shirley is committed to honoring Kendra and other Black children killed by police. She advocates for social change and even went to the 57th anniversary March On Washington to say her daughter’s name. Hey governors — like @nygovcuomo in New York, @gavinnewsom in California, @govlarryhogan in Maryland, and @govpritzker in Illinois — what action are you taking NOW to reduce the prison population in your state so that we can stop the spread of the novel coronavirus and save lives? Our lives have changed in enormous ways in recent weeks to decrease the spread of COVID-19 across the country, in large part through social distancing and increased hygiene practices. Neither of those necessary steps are possible, though, in the jails, prisons, and immigration detention centers across the US that hold more than 2 million people. These facilities often are overcrowded and they lack basic hygiene options and health care resources — circumstances that make COVID-19 outbreaks inevitable. Already, the jail on Rikers Island in New York appears to have the highest concentration of COVID-19 cases in the world. Making this problem even worse, the churn of staff and others in and out of these facilities daily means that a COVID-19 outbreak in jails and prisons will lead to illness among staff and spread of COVID-19 in the households and communities where those employees return at the end of every shift. Governors across the nation need to take decisive action NOW to reduce jail and prison populations through whatever powers they have at their disposal, including commuting sentences or granting reprieves to bring people home now.
