Greetings from Benton Hot Springs! We want to reaffirm our dedication to providing a safe and clean place for you and our staff during this current situation with the coronavirus. It has been and still is our top priority. While our remote facilities, generally provide ample space and limited public interaction, we our stepping up our cleaning efforts in the midst of this situation. Currently there is little evidence that indicates the coronavirus can survive in outside elements. Nevertheless, we continue to clean each tub after every use with a strong bleach solution. We will disinfect all portable toilets daily. We have just completed deep cleaning in all the rooms, houses and common areas. Meet Central Oregons Member of the month @loridej 🥰💚🥾 . My name is Lori Dejarnatt and I’ve lived in Madras since 1978. My husband and I own Madras Auto Parts keeping farmers farming and people on the road. We have 2 grown children and 2 large dogs. It’s so hard to choose a favorite hike but I’d have to say Snowgrass Flats and Goat Lake Basin. It was my first time seeing mountain goats in the wild and it was awesome! My favorite out of state hike was to the beautiful Bryce Canyon. Such an incredible place. I love hiking Smith Rock with the Hikerbabes because there’s always a new group of amazing ladies to meet. Hikerbabes ambassador Amy mixes up the trails so it never gets boring. After the huge gorge fire and hearing about all the hikers stranded and very few had any supplies, you’ll never find me hiking without my 10 essentials. I want to be a prepared hiker. My favorite trail snack is Trader Joe’s omega trek mix. It keeps me full and gives me lots of energy without a lot of sugar. I was scheduled to go trekking with my daughter to Machu Picchu in 2020 and since this year seems to be making its own rules it’s still on my bucket list! My best trail advice is to be prepared and have fun. Short hikes can be just as fun as long hikes! When I’m not hiking I’m making quilts. I have a blog, Facebook group and give lectures and workshops to quilt guilds. I’ll be teaching over Zoom soon! . . Good luck in our Sponsor swag giveaway! Summertime 2014, “The Docks”, a 150x200cm oil painting. You can see some details of the paint more up-close in the following photos. In the last photo and video I am with Roberto Ascóniga, wonderful human being and director of @enlaceart in which collection is this painting, in the very good company of some of the most prestigious Latin-American artists! But let’s talk about them... I met these two Russian girls, Olga and Xenia, in Barcelona. I asked if they wanted to volunteer for some photos for a future painting and they liked the idea!We walked along the beach, then, along the docks, we managed to find a way to jump down and reach a more secluded area where we took the photos. It was a fun day, we made friends and eventually they were surprised very positively by the results of the painting, not expecting that I would represent them like this, they found it very cool! I’m worried about Zion’s sacred land. I am worried about the place I call home. I’m worried about all of the trash, the graffiti, all of the social media tagging; drawing millions of people to this area that have not been taught about @leavenotrace. . We are destroying this area. There is more trash in the Narrows than I have ever seen....human feces in the middle of a trail, covered with rags, other trash and rocks. Diapers stuffed into McDonald’s bags...the closest one is an hour away....there is a huge lack of respect. . But worse than ignorance is indifference; the businesses writing about all of the local secrets (so that they can get more likes on Instagram for being in the ‘know.’) PLEASE be more responsible with your knowledge. Use your knowledge to teach about leave no trace. Use your influence for good and not for attention. You’re working against this scared land for your own benefit. We have to do better. . As locals, especially, we should take pride in this area and help educate those visiting. As a guide, it’s my responsibility to educate my guest about Leave No Trace. If they carve into the canyon walls and I didn’t help them understand why we don’t do that, then part of that is on me. . We are all visitors to this magic canyon but we act like it’s our right to make money off of the land. When we take from the land, shouldn’t we owe the land in return? At the bare minimum we owe this area protection, we owe this area respect, we owe this area rest- which is the hardest thing to give. So if we can’t stop the visitors from coming, we should at least ask for their help in keeping it clean. . I am not trying to shame anyone, I’m truly taking responsibility for my part in this. I just want to use the voice I have to educate and empower people to join a greater cause; caring for Mother Earth. . A few examples of good stewardship: Pack out what you packed in. Refrain from carving into walls. Dispose of waste properly. Lead by example, pick up trash that isn’t yours. PLEASE SHARE to help protect Zion 🧡 . Carrizo Plain Conservancy was awarded a $2000 grant from REI to support removal of old, non-functional fences within Carrizo Plain National Monument. This work has been ongoing for several years, and recently has been led by a partner nonprofit organization, Los Padres Forest Watch (LPFW). Thank you REI for your gracious support of the conservation effort in Carrizo Plain National Monument, which seeks to eliminate old, non-functional and sometimes hazardous barbed wire fences which are a relic of past farming practices there, but which today are a danger to wildlife and to people. The REI grant will be used to further the removal effort primarily with volunteers, probably this fall, when we hope that the COVID-19 restrictions on gatherings will be gone or at least relaxed. In October 2017, we partnered with LPFW and volunteers to remove a significant length of old fencing on a property near Soda Lake which we had purchased and donated to the Monument. There is a lot more to echo than we shared last time! The town of Echo was established in the 1800s. The red sandstone cliffs and surrounding geography created echoes which contribute to the name of the town! There are still a few people living here, but as you can see for the pictures there are old buildings and a LOT of history! Near this town there is a collection of natural pillars called The Witches (pictures 7-9). Captain Albert Tracy sketched them in his journal in 1858. Describing them as figures with long skirts and pointy hats. Can you see it? 🧙♀️ The last picture features a very unique structure just minutes away from Echo. Devils slide is a remnant of sediments deposited in a sea that laid in this area some 180 million years ago! It is 40 feet high and 25 feet apart! Which one are you most excited to go see?
