Weve got a lot of talented photographers at North Mid. We had a phenomenal response to the North Mid Photographer of the Year Competition - we saw 40 photos taken by colleagues submitted between April and 5 June. This years theme was All in a Days Work at North Mid and colleagues were asked to take pictures that capture the essence of life at the hospital. Out of the 40 submissions, 16 photos were shortlisted by a panel chaired by Harriet Armstrong, medical photographer and since then over 660 staff have been voting for their three favourite images. The winning photos and photographers are: 1st place - ‘Unity and Diversity, photographer Sandip Pandhare, senior staff nurse, Theatres. 2nd place - ‘All in a Day’s Work’, photographer Justin Saavedra, staff nurse A&E. 3rd place - ‘Quote of the Day’, photographer Edivan Falcinelli, staff nurse, Amber Ward There was a phenomenal response to the North Mid photography competition. Zoe Welham developed an interest in bowel cancer while she was working on a complex scientific research project in graduate school. As the inaugural PhD recipient of The Penn Foundation Scholarship, Zoe’s research will provide valuable new knowledge regarding the biological rules that govern bowel polyp growth – something which is still not fully understood. Comparing the microbiomes of polyps at different risk levels for developing bowel cancer, Zoe’s research aims to better understand how the gut microbiome influences the growth of bowel polyps. Research that she hopes will ultimately lead to a reduction in bowel cancer. Zoe will work under the supervision of the Lawrence Penn Chair of Bowel Cancer Research, Professor Mark Molloy. The majority of funding comes from national charity Bowel Cancer Australia, which has committed $6.4 million to establish the Lawrence Penn Chair of Bowel Cancer Research and will be supported by additional funds of $4 million available to the University to advance research into bowel cancer. My name is Taralyn Adakai-Fotu, I am of the Mud people clan, born for the Salt clan, my maternal grandfather is of the Sleep Rock People clan, and my paternal grandfather is of the Bitter Water clan. My maternal grandparents are the late Betty and James Redhouse, my paternal grandparents are the late Pauline and Kay Adakai. I am from Dennehotso, and in this way I am a Navajo woman. Although I am from Dennehotso and most of my family still lives there, I currently reside in Southern Arizona. I am a Registered Nurse and a student. I hope to become a Nurse Practitioner one day and ultimately return home to help my people. As Diné people we are taught the importance of K’é (kinship). We are told to always look out for one another, and we are all family whether that be by blood, clan, or through friendship. I was raised with those values so when I heard the news about what is going on back on the Navajo Nation, it absolutely broke my heart. Various communities have suffered many losses. That of which includes the loss of family members, jobs, and resources. I have personally lost family members to COVID-19 and I had the virus myself. I can say without a doubt I have never experienced anything like it in my life. I have never experienced mental, emotional, and physical pain at the same time. I knew I wanted to help others, and more specifically, my own community. I contacted the organizers for the “Dennehotso COVID-19 Relief Project” and became apart of their team. Thank you @stapaw for this. I get a lot of questions about my tattoos and if it affects my schooling or career. The short answer is no. I have to cover them for school and clinical but my job at the hospital allows me to show them as long as it is not offensive. . Now, there was one patient who asked about them. He asked “what if your husband doesn’t like tattoos?” I laughed on the inside because I would never marry someone who judges someone for their physical appearance and the choices they make but I answered him by saying “I want to marry someone who loves me for me... and that includes my choices and my tattoos.” . What I also didn’t tell him is my sleeve is completely for my grandma and my grandma is the reason I pursued nursing. My sleeve consists of a tree of life and angel wings as the roots (She loved angel wings. I have them engraved on her urn as well), a rose (her favorite flower), and a clock (showing the time she was born). . I choose to get the ink on my arm because I wanted people to see the dedication I have for my grandma. This dedication also applies to nursing. My ink doesn’t affect the way I will care for a patient. It doesn’t affect the compassion I have for them, even if they point out they do not like tattoos. That is their prerogative and I’m not one to judge them for that opinion. Just remember, even if you don’t like tattoos, the person who saves your life may be covered in them. - @nurse.leah on Instagram

When the results for my COVID test came two days later, doctors were doubtful about my reaction. I told them not to worry since Im a doctor myself. I knew that I could handle whatever the situation might be. Thats when they revealed that I was COVID-19 positive. As soon as the news spread, many of our neighbours panicked. The city administration council put up posters outside our door. People clicked photos and shot videos of my house. They shared it with my name, address, and personal details on different WhatsApp groups. Since people love to gossip on WhatsApp, ugly stories about me started circulating in social media. Even the news media put out the wrong kinds of stories. Despite going straight to the hospital from the airport, I had to be the victim of social media hatred. I didnt even go home to collect my personal belongings to make sure that I didnt transmit the virus to anyone. Thankfully, I started recovering and, after a few days, tested negative. But the hounding didnt stop after I was back home. I knew that going back home will be an unpleasant experience. Therefore, to avoid attention from neighbours and media, I insisted on going home late at night. Not just me but my entire family had to experience the harassment. My younger brother didnt step out of the house for two months. Neither did I. I would only step out during the night to avoid people. When I step out, I can still sense the eerie stares and gossip. It is like a bad dream - Im all alone. People refuse to hear when I plead to them that I didnt do anything wrong. The only way we can fight this pandemic is with the right balance of precaution and empathy. Yes, we need to be careful. But we also shouldnt let our fears overpower humanity within us”.
