Announcing The Branching Out Project! I have always appreciated the music and arts community that I have been able to experience since moving to the city. Much of what I have experienced has inspired me, directly and indirectly. Back when I did the Secret Shows, I felt a great sense of pride in helping to build a community, however small or fleeting it may have been. Simultaneously, I have seen many suffer for so many different reasons, some within that community. Institutional racism, wildfires. transphobia, etc. It feels extra prescient to many of us who may have been blind to it before due to privileges we may or may not have accounted for. Beetroot Mayo Recipe 💕🌱 Ingredients: •500ml Oil 🥃 •1x Free Range Egg 🥚 •2 tbsp Willys Beetroot Health Shot 🍏 •1 Garlic Clove 🧄 •1 Tbsp Water 💧 •Pinch of Salt 🧂 Method: Place the egg, Beetroot ACV, Garlic, Water and Salt in a large bowl and whisk/blend. Then, slowly dribble the oil in which will thicken the mix to make a thick mayonnaise. If it gets too thick you can thin it with a few drops of Beetroot ACV (not oil). Im absolutely beyond excited to announce the upcoming Psychedelic Medicine Association! To my doctor friends, you know we werent taught anything about psychedelic medicines in medical school because the research had been halted by their criminalization, but these medicines are BACK and many of them are proving themselves to heal our mental (and physical) health crises like no other therapies out there. Its time we presented our patients with the full range of options to help them heal themselves, and that starts by educating ourselves on whats out there and whats coming. Thats where the Psychedelic Medicine Association comes in. Well send information monthly to members that recaps the latest in psychedelic science findings, well host webinars to help increase understanding, and well provide you with guidelines for how to talk to patients about these medicines in a way that keeps you safe from legal concerns. And this is not just for doctors - PAs, nurse practitioners, therapists, counselors - ANYONE who may be the first person a patient comes to when in need - we want you to join us! There will be a forum in which practitioners can discuss topics with each other, and a second forum in which they can converse with those in the industry who are conducting the research, running the treatment centers, and making the medications. Volume 1 of our Fall20 collection is here! It is made up of 8 pieces - about half the size of our typical collections in the past, but in some ways I’m more excited about this collection than ever. The design process for these pieces happened last spring, during the peak of uncertainty with Covid. To be honest, I wasn’t sure we’d even have a fall collection given the challenges we were facing here and those our partners were facing in Nairobi. In some ways, given the state of the world, coming out with new product like nothing was different just didn’t feel right to me, but pressing pause completely wasn’t the answer...after all, we need to press on and find joy in the midst of uncertainty. So instead of a full fall collection, I decided mini collections, or volumes, was the way to go. It feels right. The inspiration for these pieces came straight out of how I was feeling last spring. I was craving normalcy, security, joy, beauty, the ability to plan, and trying to fight back fear. All I wanted to wear were pieces that felt comforting, but at the same time I wanted to get dressed up to feel like everything was ok. It was (and still is) a time of conflicting emotions. I hope you’ll find that these 8 pieces reflect my and our collective desire and need to find joy in the simple and unexpected places as well as a rejection of giving in to fear and doom. In the wake of losing RBG, it is as important as ever to choose the discipline of hope! The final #SurvivorSaturday of #ChildhoodCancerAwarenessMonth is very special because its one of our own! Lauren Peyton was treated at #MSKKids, our pediatric program, when she was fourteen and is now a Clinical Nurse IV at #MSKMonmouth. She was first diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma and later had myelodysplastic syndrome and acute myeloid leukemia. Lauren needed a stem cell transplant and was matched with a donor from Germany. They were able to meet in person and are now close friends who text every day and even have matching tattoos to symbolize their connection! Lauren was inspired by her own nurses to become a nurse. She said, Every day I’m really grateful for everything MSK has done for me. Having that support behind you as a patient inspired me to provide that to people.” Lauren also added, What COVID has taught us, and what being a survivor has taught me, is that you can plan as much as you want but you cannot control what happens. My name is Kat and I’m a nutritionist..but so are you! We are all “nutritionists” on some level. You gotta eat, right?! And you likely decide what, when, and how much to eat most of the time. Two important things to healthy eating and seeing the results you want. 1. Nutrition knowledge because what you know about fueling your body will drive your choices. . 2. Habits. Adherence to a nutrition plan is the #1 predictor of success. It’s a journey. . A great example is a very inspiring client who came to me wanting to lose weight and compete in a triathlon. She was obese and had no experience with endurance sports. We met weekly to discuss nutrition education and make habit goals. Long story short, over 1 year, she lost 50lbs, raced an Olympic distance triathlon, finished a half marathon, and is now training for an Ironman. Amazing work and unbreakable focus! . HOWEVER, the best part of her story is this..Her job title is medical missionary. She spends 8+ weeks a year in other countries providing much needed medical aid. Not only did she transform her body with nutrition and exercise but was able to do more physically without fatigue and pain holding her back while on mission trips. Nu ben ik banketbakster bij Lekker Brood. Beter verwend dan verwaarloosd en beter te duur dan niet te koop. Via de Gemeente kreeg ik een telefoontje waarin mij werd verteld dat er een nieuw project was bij de Dintelstraat, van Lekker Brood en Happy Tosti. Toen ze hoorden dat ik van bakken houd, mocht ik bij Lekker Brood aan de slag! Het leukste aan mijn werk vind ik plaatcake maken. Ik vind het leuk om creatief bezig te zijn en om nieuwe producten te bedenken. Nu ben ik volop bezig met het leren van nieuwe dingen en ik wil me nog verder ontwikkelen in de patisserie. De samenwerking met mijn leidinggevende, daar ben ik trots op. Ze weet veel en leert mij op een prettige manier nieuwe dingen bij. People sometimes ask how it works...heres a quick explanation: After a hen lays an egg in a nest, the egg rolls onto the white belt thats visible in the first two photos. The belt brings eggs from nests the length of the barn into our egg room where we sort them. We take out cracks, doubles, odd shells, smalls, and dirty eggs. The good eggs destined for the hatchery are put into trays (pointy-side down!) and then into carts. Si tu respuesta es sí, ¡sigue leyendo!🤓 Cuando hablamos de armonías perfectas, los vinos tintos con quesos madurados son una opción que nunca pasará de moda. Soy fan de una tabla con quesos y un buen vino para una tertulia🍷🧀. Los quesos madurados son fuertes en aromas y sabores, por eso deben acompañarse con vinos que tengan una similitud con ellos, es decir con vinos vigorosos, de esos que nunca olvidas. Entonces, al momento de armar una tabla de quesos recomiendo pensar en el vino que van a probar, si es astringente como un Cabernet Sauvignon, si es suave como un Merlot o si tiene picor como lo tiene un Syrah, allí encontrarás una forma más fácil de realizarla o pedirla. En fotos te muestro unos quesos(faltan muchos) que van bien con algunas cepas tintas. Every year, around August, I have to have my photo taken professionally for work 💅🏻. I should say I “get” to have my photo taken...but I’ve always dreaded it. Despite how outrageously loud I am, and how often I (inadvertently) draw attention for my general flamboyance 💃, I’ve never particularly liked being in front of the camera with all eyes on me. I’d much prefer to be standing off to the side giving encouragement or direction or making people laugh and making sure everybody is happy. This year, for the first time ever, my time came - and I wasn’t as nervous! Maybe it was the Beauty Squad (thank you @danileighcreative for the unreal multidimensional colour and @5thavenueaustralia for my fave outrageous va va voom hair style and @lancomeofficial for the 🔥face🔥) And not to mention the Number One Best Photographer In The World @leshallackphoto 📸. I walked to my mark, squared my shoulders in mock confidence as I’ve seen so many do before me. And stared straight down the barrel of the camera. . . OBVIOUSLY there are some lol’ing outtakes (I am still me). But ultimately I’m stoked with the result. I still feel discomfort now with publicly stating that I don’t hate photos of myself 😂 and I’m also low key conscious of my extra chin (thank you social conditioning) but I’m doing it anyway. Posting it anyway. . Classic felt cute might delete later. . . Friendly reminder to anybody who is more comfortable walking in the shadows or hiding their light - I honour your choice - but sometimes playing in the sun and owning your 🌈 is fun too. . . . BLUEBERRIES When I was initially coming up with this list of cardiovascular friendly foods, I initially put berries. What I really meant was blueberries! This is because out of all the berries, blueberries are the most beneficial for the cardiovascular system. I would also like to note that the wild blueberry variety, vaccinium myrtillus, has additional benefits, but we will save that discussion for another day. For now, let’s shed some light on the cardiovascular benefits of blueberries. ❤️❤️❤️ 1) Do they decrease our risk of cardiovascular disease? As far as we know, no. That being said, they can help with aspects of atherosclerosis (clogged arteries) and atherosclerosis is a leading cause of cardiovascular disease. They do this by reducing the amount of LDL (‘bad cholesterol) that gets oxidized, which is one of the first steps in developing atherosclerosis. 2) This is hard to prove, but in theory they would help. Because they are powerful antioxidants, they could help reduce the amount of oxidative damage to blood vessels. 3) Blueberries have been shown to induce relaxation of the blood vessels and improve vascular tone. This essentially means they have an ability to decrease our blood pressure (a very small amount) and improve the functionality of our blood vessels. 4) Some studies say yes, blueberries help improve insulin sensitivity (a problem found in those with pre-diabetes, or type 2 diabetes) and others say it does nothing. What this tells me is: if there is a benefit on insulin, it’s likely small. That being said, berries are debatably one of the most diabetes friendly fruits you can consume. FYI, most of these studies look at dried blueberry powders. This is the only way you can dose these fruits high enough to see an effect in a relatively short period of time. Morning! Vandaag is het voor mij een bijzondere dag. Sinds een paar dagen is mijn derde boek BERSAMA verkrijgbaar en vanmiddag is de officiele lancering. Anders dan anders deze keer omdat we online gaan lanceren met voor de genodigden een Bersama Box. Een feestje met hapjes en een drankje moeten we maar later een keer doen. Want je weet het, als Indische heb ik niet echt een reden nodig om een feestje te bouwen. Mensen vragen me wel eens, heb je dromen. En tuurlijk heb ik die. Maar drie keer een boek mogen uitbrengen ....ja, Im living my dreams. Een dankbaar mens ben ik. Op dagen zoals vandaag is er alleen maar meer reden om te beseffen waar ik als mens sta. Mijn kinderen, mijn familie in Nederland en Australie (en voor de duidelijkheid, voor mij is er geen schoondochters of schoonfamilie of in-laws, alleen gezin en familie, alles is eigen) zijn allemaal mensen die deel zijn van mijn leven en ook invloed hebben op mijn bestaan, gelukkig, en daar ben ik dankbaar voor. Maar de twee mensen die misschien het meest bepalend zijn geweest in mijn ontwikkeling als mens zijn er niet meer. Het verliezen van dierbaren (voor mij mijn moeder en man) brengt niet alleen verdriet met zich mee (want eerlijk is eerlijk, sommige dagen steekt het gemis me genadeloos) maar het brengt ook het besef dat zij een deel van mij zijn, en ik van hun, en dat dit altijd zo zal blijven. Dat ik ook door hun inbreng en invloed in staat ben om als mens te groeien. Dit voelt als een soort rijkdom. Aqui, na equipe do Espaço Mãe, temos a Beatriz Lorenzi @beatrizlorenzi_ tem 26 anos é mãe, feminista e doula formada pelo GAMA. Formada arquiteta e urbanista na USP, descobriu que o sonho da maternidade se tornaria realidade antes do planejado. Apesar de toda a insegurança que acompanha esse desafio, resolveu abraçá-lo, estudar e se emponderar para o primeiro grande passo: o parto. Ao longo do processo, entrou em contato com um mundo antes desconhecido e decidiu compartilhar cada novo aprendizado e nova descoberta nas mídias sociais. Com isso, muitas futuras mães passaram a entrar em contato e assim descobriu sua verdadeira vocação: doular. Após gestar e parir, percebeu que de fato esse era seu objetivo - acompanhar outras mulheres em seus processos, com carinho e apoio físico, emocional e informacional. Nesse sentido, buscou aprofundar seus estudos, se formou doula e desde teve ainda mais certeza de que fez a escolha certa. Tem como base em seu atendimento o respeito à autonomia e liberdade da mulher e o incentivo ao conhecimento e emponderamento. A beautiful summer salad that found in @foodandwine magazine! Thank you @spoonabilities 💛 This salad is called Gazpacho Salad. . The Gazpacho part is in the dressing. I used the seeds from the Heirloom tomatoes, the skin, and seeds from the cucumbers and any scraps from the bell peppers. Plus, some chopped tomatoes, basil, lime juice, garlic, and white balsamic vinegar. Then, I blended and double strained and seasoned with sea salt to taste. This salad dressing was delicious and flavorful. It tasted like Gazpacho. So, there was no food waste making this salad. . I smile a lot. But lately I have been pretty grumpy with the state of the world.⠀ ⠀ I dont like seeing genuine asylum seekers being treated like criminals.⠀ I dont like seeing people troll Magda Szubanski after she participated in an ad to help cheer us on during lockdown.⠀ I dont like the fact that 1 woman a week on average is dying due to domestic violence.⠀ I dont like people suggesting that old peoples lives are less valuable than others.⠀ I dont like the fact that the gender pay gap remains at 14% in 2020⠀ I dont like the fact that we still need to be saying Black Lives Matter.⠀ I dont like that the protection of our earth isnt bipartisan. ⠀ ⠀ I could go on, this is what comes to top of mind today. ⠀ ⠀ I am in such a position of privilege that I can choose to not think about many of these things and my life will tick along quite fine.⠀ But its not fine. Adding a hint of the exquisite flavour of Yuzu Lemons to a simple home-baked cookie is the kind of gourmet twist that will set you apart from the rest. A recipe so simple that you will hardly believe how delicious the end product is - take it from us! Settle down with a hot cup of tea and a hot serving of fresh cookies and beat any bluesy day with ease! Ingredients: - 240 gms all purpose flour - 120 gms sugar (including 40 gms of brown sugar) - 100 gms unsalted butter - 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice - 2 teaspoons lime/lemon zest (for the extra aroma and zing) - 1 tablespoon Sprig gourmet Yuzu lemon extract - 1 egg - 1 teaspoon baking soda - Sprinkle of salt Procedure - Mix in all the dry ingredients (flour, baking soda, pinch of salt) and keep aside. - In a large bowl, whip the sugar and butter till it turns light and fluffy. Add in one egg and beat till smooth. Add in the lime juice, lime and lemon zest and Sprig gourmet Yuzu lemon extract. - Now blend in the flour mixture with the wet ingredients to a cookie dough. Refrigerate the dough for a minimum of 45 minutes. - Preheat the oven to 350 deg Fahrenheit (180 deg Celsius) for 10 mins. - - Take an ice cream scoop or a table spoon and spread cookies on a parchment paper cookie tray. Period party 💃 Just started my period, right on time for me, day 31 I used to only have a period every 90 + days on average. I went a whole year without one at different times. I had PMS the whole time though - I was a bloody moody cow! Or is that a bloodless moody cow 🤔 It was a hard hard time, frustrating, confusing and I was often dismissed. Even by myself! I worked so hard on getting my periods back, and I am so pleased I did. Not having a period in your cycling years is not normal, and should be investigated (if you are on a form of contraception that stops your period then thats another conversation.) We need to investigate why your brain and ovaries are not communicating as they should!! So many things could be at play from stress, thyroid imbalance, oestrogen, progesterone, testosterone imbalance to elevated prolactin, over exercising and low body fat. Plus PCOS, underactive thyroid and more. It is a puzzle we need to solve, together. Its more than just taking a pill to mask the symptoms. I am going to share a conversation with an INCREDIBLE woman named Lauren that I have the absolute privileged of working with, she very kindly shares her hormonal journey with us and how we worked on getting your brain and ovaries talking again and her getting her period back after 15 months of amenorrhoea, in the Hormone Balance School. Individual Level: ➡️I believe when a person embarks on a journey toward health optimization they become the best version of themselves. ➡️When a client improves their health, they gain confidence, energy, and lower stress. ➡️This in turn translates to higher productivity, improved interpersonal relationships, and has a ripple effect through the lives of those around them. . Community Level: ➡️I believe that the more members of a community are at their best, healthiest selves will make a stable healthy environment for the next generations to thrive in. ➡️I believe that we need to close the gap on dieting mentality and end yo-yo dieting in our generation. .
