🤬 Pesky bumps around your mouth and nose? Youre not alone!⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ 👩🏻⚕️ I see at least a few patients every clinic with this & it often gets confused for acne or rosacea. Its technically neither & requires very different treatment.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ This is a common, chronic condition that is a scourge on many peoples lives.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ WHAT IS IT?⠀⠀ ⠀ 👉 Its a common rash that presents with fine red or pink bumps or pustules & occurs around the mouth, the nose, & even sometimes around the eyes (scroll for pics). It can be itchy or even burn.⠀⠀ ⠀ HOW DO I KNOW I HAVE IT?⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ 👉 It can look like acne or rosacea & the differences are subtle. I recommend seeing a board-certified dermatologist for an accurate diagnosis.⠀ ⠀⠀ WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO ME?⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ✨ Like most things in dermatology, it’s complicated & we don’t exactly know why. It can be triggered by irritation from fluorinated toothpaste, topical steroids or ingredients in personal care products.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ 👉 There is evidence that your skin barrier function, cutaneous immune system, microflora, and follicular bacteria can play a role.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ 😃 GOOD NEWS: Its not contagious!⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ 😫 BAD NEWS: Its chronic and comes and goes. Theres no magic cure, but there are many good medications that can help.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⚠️ RULE #1, #2, and #3: DO NOT PUT TOPICAL STEROIDS ON IT.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ 👉 This is the biggest mistake I see patients make. They will put topical steroids they have at home on it, which will temporarily improve it. Then, the rash will come back with a vengeance. Topical steroids are a no-no, it will flare you and make the rash worse.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ OK, SO HOW DO YOU TREAT IT?⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ 👉 Switch to a non-fluorinated toothpaste & using a gentle skincare regimen (no scrubbing) can help.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ 👉 Most people do need prescription medications, like topical or oral antibiotics, or topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory creams to manage this. The best thing to do is to see a local #boardcertifieddermatologist for a personalized treatment plan.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ 👉 It typically comes and goes, so you will have to adapt to managing it.
