And I write this with a lot of self-awareness that I am a white artist born in the United States who, despite being critical of the capitalist system, recognizes how I have fit into it. I too have felt the pressure to brand myself, to turn art into a commodity, to find ways to work and survive (as we all must do) under capitalism. I think art is a powerful tool for imagining new futures. Art gives me hope, through it I feel most capable of communicating how I feel. But creating alone is not enough.
