Alexandr Rodchenko / “Books Please! In All Forms of Knowledge” / 1924 / Soviet propaganda graphic design / 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗦𝗠 One of the 20th century’s most influential movements amounted to nothing less than an attack on art. In 1922, a Russian artist named Aleksei Gan penned a manifesto that began with words in glaring uppercase: “WE DECLARE UNCOMPROMISING WAR ON ART!” The Russian Revolution had taken place five years earlier, in 1917. The country was in the process of freeing itself from the grips of a powerful ruling elite; now it would revolutionize Russia’s cultural life, too, and put art to work in service of a new, Communist society. Gan and his artistic compatriots—including V.Tatlin and A.Rodchenko, considered the founders of the movement known as Constructivism, as well as V.Stepanova, L.Popova, El Lissitzky, and others—sought new art forms and modes of making art to serve the masses. Art, they believed, had no place in the hermetic space of the artist’s studio. Instead, it should reflect the modern, industrial world; be formulated in laboratories and factories; and be deployed as an active agent in the broader Communist revolution. The movement emphasized building and science, rather than artistic expression, and its goals went far beyond the realm of art. They soughts to influence architecture, design, fashion, and all mass-produced objects. In place of painterly concerns with composition. A new, Constructivist art would look toward industrial production; approach the artist as an engineer, rather than an easel painter; and serve the proletariat. Constructivists used sparse, geometric forms and modest materials. Operation Silver Fox (June 29 – Nov. 17 1941) . Operation Silver Fox was a military operation during Operation Barbarossa executed by mostly Finnish and German troops. The main objective of the operation was to cut off and capture the Soviet Port of Murmansk, at the northern Finnish-Russian border. The plan was to make a pincer-movement from northern Finland towards the objective with around 230,000 soldiers. The attack started on the 29th of June and the operation was divided in three stages: operation Reindeer, operation Platinum Fox and operation Arctic Fox. . Prior to the official attack, the Finnish-German troops executed operation Reindeer, in which two German divisions moved from Kirkenes to capture the area around Petsamo. The offensive came as a surprise for the Soviet troops, who were quickly overpowered. This operation began successfully and the troops regrouped themselves in preparation of the following phase: operation Platinum Fox. . On the 29th of June, operation Platinum Fox was executed, in which the Germans had to advance east from Petsamo towards the Port of Murmansk. Supported by the element of surprise, the attack started off well for the Germans, but divisions of the Soviet’s 14th Army managed to recover themselves. The Soviets had the advantage with constant restocking from the port, the constant arrival of reinforcements and the support of several marine units in Murmansk. After several unsuccessful attempts of the German to cross the Litsa River, operation Platinum Fox had failed. . Operation Polar Fox also started on the 29th of June. In this attack German units launched a frontal attack against Salla, while Finnish troops attempted to outflank the Soviet lines further south towards Kayraly. The Germans directly came under heavy fire in the villages around Salla. Untrained for the Arctic warfare, they suffered heavy losses. Other divisions were also halted in their advance by the strong Soviet resistance. Operation Silver Fox was officially ended by the führer on November 17 1941. The main reasons for the failure were: difficult terrain with bad roads, poor intelligence and communication and the fierce resistance of the Red Army. - @worldwar2_story on Instagram

Today marks the 5 year anniversary of Au De La. Our first record released by thee almighty Southern Lord Records. If it wasn’t for Greg Anderson taking the time to not only listen but to actually release the record, we can positively say we wouldn’t have accomplished a fraction of what we have as a band in the last 5 years. His undying support, his energy and positive enthusiasm, his big heart, warmth, down to earth nature and more importantly, his consistent thoughtfulness and care in looking out for us, has made the journey to date. We are eternally grateful for your endless support and it’s an honour to now consider you a dear dear good friend. We love you Greg. When he was a kid, @jacob_soderqvist ‘s brother shot him through the eye with an arrow that somehow didn’t kill him. But Jacob wasn’t going to let a little incident like that get in the way of his dreams and went on to become a professional snowboarder with just one eye. I had the pleasure of laughing and snowboarding with Jacob in some unreal places in the mid nineties and one night in May at around one in the morning we were riding just north of the arctic circle in Norway when I snapped this one of him as the sun was setting over the Atlantic/Herjangsfjorden. What’s special about this cover for me is that it ran without the usual words and blurbs that try to sell you the magazine. It was a quarter century ago and I thought I remembered it being someone else’s idea but @gcharlie , the photo editor from back then insists the idea was mine and that I demanded the photo to run naked or to send it back. Either way it was an honor to be a senior photographer for @snowboardermag back then and it was the first snowboard magazine cover of its kind. This trip to Scandinavia in ‘96 was to film for the third Twist movie ’TheGift’ with @marcfrankmontoya @kwastell @tjliese @ian_ruhter @wesmakepeace @nathanyant and Jacob but I’m glad I brought my still camera too. 📷: @justinhostynek prolly Velvia #canoneos1 #35mmphotography - @absinthefilms on Instagram
