I have recorded a podcast for @melodicdiggers - and rather than playing all sorts of new club music and promote my own releases, I decided to select a few of my favourite classics from some of the pioneers from the Detroit and Chicago scene in the 80s and 90s as a tribute to these producers and DJs. This one hit me so personally because he was only 18 years old. His whole life ahead of him, he was working to pay off his car and going to school. I was his age not so along ago, I see myself in Andres, working to build a future for yourself and working hard every day, this could have been any other Black and Brown kid. We are being MURDERED EVERYDAY, Im so f*uc*ing tired, I’m so f*uc*ing furious. Andres was shot and killed today by LASD while doing his job, according to the manger of the body shop he was on his knees with his hands up when he was shot seven times. The police destroyed all the footage to cover their tracks. His family deserves justice, the police need to be held ACCOUNTABLE. Fun fact: I used to be in a boy band. Called “Awesome.” And back then, we WERE awesome 😆 We toured with some of the biggest groups to date, such as NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, Smashing Pumpkins, Mary J Blige, Bryan Adams, George Michael, and more. We had a hit song on the billboard charts in between the Spice Girls and Janet Jackson. I’ve been lucky enough to be on stage in front of thousands of fans screaming my name and holding cardboard cutouts of my face! It’s a euphoric feeling that so many don’t get to experience and I’m so grateful. But over these last few months, I’ve been on a different kind of stage. People’s driveways. Retirement centers, cul de sacs, front porches, nursing homes, hospital parking lots and neighborhoods with senior citizens who haven’t left their homes in months. I’ve heard their stories and cried with them! And it’s not just stories about Covid or being quarantined-it’s the stories that are still happening ALONG with the challenges of Covid. The death of a child, the amputation from a work accident, the financially struggling family who struggled long before the virus, the lonely elderly who haven’t had interaction with others in 1/2 a year. It’s THESE performances that have lifted ME. It’s THESE performances that have reminded me of why I do what I do. It’s THESE performances that are more euphoric than any concert I could ever give on stage in front of millions. These people have breathed new life into me and into my music. And though these times are so challenging, the lessons I have learned from all of you, are far more valuable than anything I could ever gain from matching costumes, girls screaming my name (Julie still does it for me😉), and fancy green rooms. 5 Tips to Running a Successful Online Fitness Business 😍😍 I spent my weekend travelling to Penticton, BC and had a chance to swing by a local lake with my laptop, and made me feel the vibes of running a successful online fitness business. Here are my top 5 tips to running one that’s profitable. 1) Get CLEAR on WHY you’re doing it. This sh*t is NOT easy fam. No matter how many Facebook ads you see that sell you the world and deliver you a pile of dirt, this…. Isn’t… easy. It’s 100% worth it. On the other side of your hard work is a life you can’t even begin to imagine. But it’s not easy. So know WHY you’re doing it, which pushes through the hard times. 2) Know your STRENGTHS and know your WEAKNESSES. If you’re REALLY GOOD at helping men with fat loss – focus on that. Don’t try to be an every-man, or you’ll end up working with no-man/woman. Know your strengths and play to them, pick someone to serve and serve them F**KING WELL. 3) Expand your knowledge. Read a damn book, turn on post notifications for a mentor you trust (hi, I’m Brian, do it for me 😉 But EXPAND your knowledge. You DON’T know how to succeed on your own (yet) otherwise you’d already have an online business that’s making money. And even if you DO know how to succeed… you can always learn more. 4) BLOCK OUT NEGATIVITY. Do not let nay-sayers take you from your goals. People will laugh at you taking photos in public. Your friends will make fun of you for all the fitness posts you’re making. Your family won’t support you when you’re trying to be an “online trainer.” Stay focused on your goals, so you get the last laugh. 5) Surround yourself with badass people. I’m talking about a network of people who believe in the same things that you do. Cut out the friends who drag you down (harsh, but true) and bring in friends who believe in you and support your goals. Surround yourself with winners, and you’ll become a winner. “Solo Monk” - Thelonious Monk, 1965, US. Artwork By Paul Davis. (1/2) Thelonious Monk, was a mysterious yet wacky musician, but he was also the priest of improve, the baron of bebop, the father of modern jazz and a true friend to all. He taught himself how to read music by the age of 5, and learned to play the piano on his own by simply observing his sister’s piano lessons when he was 6. He went on to attend the Stuyvesant High School, a public school for gifted students, where he was classically trained, but never finished because he was already performing in clubs. As a hobby, and a way to make money, he used take part in a weekly amateur music contest at the Apollo Theatre, but since he basically won every time, he was banned from the event. Monk always went against the fashion. If everyone was playing fast, he would be slow, and vice versa (he was one of the fastest piano players ever). He was interested in doing what he wanted. He would never speak to his audience or give interviews, he believed his music would do all the talking. It is perhaps for that reason that he remains a mysterious figure whose odd antics come before his musical prowesse. That could largely be due to white critics and audiences, frustrated by this tall and taciturn Black man who felt it unnecessary to verbally explain his music to them. People found him to be defiant when in reality, he was communicating through his music, music that many chose to not hear. He was often tormented by the police, and that cost him. Even though Monk was a highly acclaimed artist and one of only 5 jazz musicians to ever be on the cover of Time Magazine, he just wasn’t making any money. That was in great part due to the police revoking his cabaret licence, preventing him to perform in clubs and earn a living. He got his licence revoked after being arrested for holding heroin for his friend Bud Powell and for refusing to give up the young, budding artist’s name.
