If he wasn’t already chair of Penn State College of Medicine’s Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, Dr. Berend Mets could work as a tour guide in the museum he’s building. On a recent walk through his department’s growing collection of medical gadgets from throughout history, Mets talked about anesthesiology the way some people talk about exploring space. Anesthesiology is not what you think. Doctors don’t inject you with the medical equivalent of Sleepy Time Tea, and you don’t take a nap. Instead, they deliver chemicals that activate your body’s off switch. Machines pump your heart and fill your lungs with air, while you teeter in a twilight state between this world and the next. Pain – or the memory of it, anyway – doesn’t exist there. Then the anesthesiologist brings you back, unscathed. Anesthetists like Mets rarely make headlines, but they cast big shadows. They have been center stage throughout COVID-19. The ventilators you’ve heard so much about are their equipment. And without them, surgery and much of medical science would be unthinkable. “You hold people’s lives in your hands,” Mets said. Glass cabinets in the wood-walled Julien F. Biebuyck library, a lecture and meeting room at the College of Medicine where Anesthesiology presents important talks, will show tools and accoutrements from more than 100 years of medical innovation. The idea is a tactile museum; students will hold and handle the same equipment as their counterparts from history. The College of Medicine will inaugurate the new facility — named the Dr. Berend Mets Museum of Anaesthesia — at an event memorializing the 50th anniversary of Mets’ department in October. “I’m a nurse manager on Alkek 9, a COVID ICU/IMU (intermediate care unit) at Houston Methodist. I’m married and my husband is also in the medical field. He is a CRNA (certified registered nurse anesthetist) at one of the community hospitals. I have three grown children. Two of them are at home -- they’re home from college living here for the summer. We’ve had a lot of discussions about COVID, and what they can do to protect themselves. They seem to be taking it seriously. My job has changed a lot recently. I think the important things are to stay home as much as possible and to wear a mask. And not to think that the mask is infringing upon your rights. Instead, think of the mask as protecting other people in our community who are vulnerable, in the event that you may have coronavirus and be asymptomatic, which we know happens. Also, in the event that you come into contact with someone else who might have coronavirus, if you both are wearing a mask, your chances of contracting the virus decreases substantially. Vor Trainingsbeginn: Selbstverpflichtungserklärung Aufgrund gesetzlicher Vorgaben ist es notwendig, dass jedes SSP-Mitglied vor Trainingsbeginn eine Selbstverpflichtungserklärung unterschreibt. Dieses erhaltet Ihr in den kommenden Tagen per Email. Solltet Ihr nichts erhalten, könnt das Formular auch unter info@sportschule-ffb.de anfordern. Alternativ werden wir am Freitag, den 5. When I get the staple gun out it means I’m serious about something. Today I spent the afternoon hanging the new Green Screen in the Pain Cave. (A pain cave is what cyclists call the room where the indoor trainer is). The only drawback is that this little room is a converted space way up in our roof, which is not only quite warm - its a long way away from our modem and the streaming is missing frames and glitching with dropouts. So for the next 30 days, Im trying out Telstras Wi-Fi coverage guarantee - where they will work with you over 30 days to ensure your Wi-Fi coverage reaches every room in your house, from the PodCave in the basement to the Pain Cave in the attic (who knew our little home had so many caves?) Do you remember where you were 6 mos. ago? On 3/12/20, my mom & I busted out our compression socks & embarked on a trip of a lifetime, what we refer to as “our casual overnighter to Argentina”. The final destination was Antartica. We made it to Ushuaia, Argentina, the southernmost city in the 🌍 , where we got authentic malbec, paella, ♥️ palpitations & a side of anxiety. 2 hrs after we got to our hotel, the man who arranged our trip told us we had to go home. Our return flights, scheduled for 2 weeks in the future, were cancelled & they were closing the borders. We quickly scrambled to get flights home, but spotty internet & no habla Espanol meant we go to the airport 1st thing in the am. We got the last seats on a flight from Ushuaia-Buenos Aires & direct from BA- LAX w. a 10 hr layover. During our layover in BA, I applied acupressure beads on weary travelers. The beads help reduce stress & anxiety. Natural Xanax, if you will. I’d brought them to alleviate seasickness. Little did I know how handy they’d be. 72 hours & 14K miles after we departed LAX, we arrived back at LAX. We sailed through Global Entry w. no additional precautions like temperature checks ~1 hour. The following day I drove my mom back to Sacramento, w. the intention of staying a week. That was 3/16/20. Through it all we maintained a good outlook. #mindsetmatters I’ve moved 3 times this YEAR (Yes in 2020). I lived in the same place in NYC for 10 years & my first apartment in LA for 2. Moving is 1 of the most stressful things a person can do. Something is pushing me, however grueling &uncomfortable. I’ll go w. the flow instead of fighting against it I’m not where I thought I would be, but I wouldn’t change it for the world I’m grateful for the invaluable foundation of diet & lifestyle habits I’ve learned, formed & relied on Everything is funny if you wait long enough, some things are funny right away (thank you @rebeccalrobinson) Everything is figureoutable (thank you @marieforleo) As the great prophet, Ferris Bueller claimed in the 1986 hit “Life moves pretty fast. Как чудесно вписана она между Обсерваторным холмом и небольшим сквериком, полнящимся старыми деревьями и старой киевской интеллигенцией. Как великолепны ее стройные фасады, как чудесен тот факт, что в «тайных» ее частях сохранились артефакты ушедшего времени. Тут вам и оригинальные двери с фурнитурой, и метлах, и ковка, и засовы с замками. Гуляя по черному ходу невольно задумываешься, какой нынче год... Да и на заднем дворе все как-то дивно старомодно - тут вам и тишина, и покой, и старые санитарочки в белых халатах, что простонародными голосами обсуждают всякую всячину. Услада сплошная. И все это под кронами ароматных елок, да на вскрытых десятком слоев масляной краски скамейках — чудовищно по-киевски. Почему чудовищно? Да потому, что это уже прошлое. А внутри-то как! Мраморные лестницы, потолки метров в пять, а полы скрипят так, что дух захватывает! А витражи какие! Хоть и совок сплошной, а приятно. Атмосфера там, в тех старых коридорах, классная... Mensen vroegen zich destijds af of ik vanuit Ruinen wel kon aarden in een flat in de Koedijkslanden. Vanaf het eerste moment dat ik in Meppel woon, nu alweer 31 jaar, voel ik mij er thuis. Inmiddels woon ik al 28 jaar in de wijk Oosterboer. In een gemoedelijke straat waar afgelopen zomer zelfs een bingo op afstand werd georganiseerd. Ik word altijd blij als ik Meppel weer op de borden zie staan. Wat maakt Meppel dan zo speciaal? Dat is voor mij de gemoedelijkheid van een dorp. Dat je voor een enkele boodschap een uur onderweg kunt zijn omdat je zoveel bekenden tegenkomt. Daarnaast heeft Meppel alles wat ik in een stad qua voorzieningen zoek. Het is een mooie compacte stad en heeft een divers aanbod van horeca en gezellige pleinen. Daarnaast bevindt Meppel zich in een mooie waterrijke en bosrijke omgeving. Voor elk wat wils. Deze foto is gemaakt bij de jachthaven. De weidsheid van het water, ik houd ervan. Sinds 4 januari 2006 ben ik zelfstandig ondernemer in Meppel. Ik verricht acquisitie voor andere bedrijven en ik weet dus uit eigen ervaring hoe ondernemend Meppel is. Alhoewel het ondernemerschap momenteel wel erg op de proef wordt gesteld. Maar Meppel zou Meppel niet zijn als er geen mooie initiatieven van de grond komen. Ondernemers die elkaar opzoeken om samen de schouders eronder te zetten in corona tijd. Denken in kansen en mogelijkheden dat is wat mij betreft Meppel ten voeten uit. Ik ben met West Brinck Acquisitie lid van BC Meppel. Een mooie business club waar ik mij thuis voel. Wat was het een eer voor ons... Afgelopen zaterdag hadden wij de eer mee te mogen helpen om de 100e verjaardag van Tweede Wereldoorlog Veteraan Klaas Appel onvergetelijk te maken✌️✌️✌️ Deze stokoude Huzaar heeft in de meidagen van 1940 samen met zijn kameraden ons land verdedigd tegen de invallende Duitsers. We reden Klaas rond in Gemeente Enkhuizen langs huizen waar hij gewoond heeft, langs het bedrijf waar hij vroeger heeft wat bekend is als Syngenta Flowers Europe en langs een huis op het Spaans Leger waar hij vroeger wapeninstructies kreeg. Zeer uniek om dit te horen als vrijwilliger en verhalen en belevenissen te horen van deze veteraan. Un sottile strato di fango rappreso ne sfumava i contorni, e io lo guardavo come si guardano certe antiche fotografie in seppia, con un misto di meraviglia e rimpianto. Proprio in foto lo rivedo ora, sfocato, misterioso e negli stessi toni dell’ocra. L’immagine che ho appeso alla parete della mia stanza lo immortala però da vivo, con le pale tuffate nella corrente e un mulo accanto, caricato del frutto del suo ostinato lavoro. Quel giorno, dalla sponda del lago, lo osservavo invece silenzioso e inerte. Mio nonno materno era mugnaio, Mulinèr in dialetto Cadorino. Si chiamava Tabacchi, come buona parte degli abitanti della frazione di Sottocastello a Pieve di Cadore, il mio paese di nascita. Tabacchi Pio Luigi: il nome che ho ereditato. Con i suoi ricordi di bambino, contenuti nella sua autobiografia, Lamore non basta, da poco edita per @giuntieditore, vogliamo festeggiare Luigi Ciotti. Lui, che oggi compie 75 anni (e non li dimostra. Lui che, 55 anni fa, faceva nascere il Gruppo Abele di cui è ancora una delle più forti colonne portanti. Спортсмены 60+ с которыми мы познакомились на кубке Президента по гребле на каноэ и байдарке.💪 Их успехи мотивируют! ⠀ У Сигачёва Валерия в этом году юбилей! 18 сентября он отметит 60 лет! В детстве и юности Валерий занимался греблей на каноэ. Но после поступления в институт, времени не хватало, и занятия каноэ пришлось оставить. Как часто бывает, в любимый спорт нас возвращают дети. Так случилось и у Валерия - он привел в каноэ своего подросшего младшего сына и потихоньку втянулся сам. Позже Валерия пригласили в команду по гребле на лодках Дракон. И сейчас он активно тренируется на Драконах, а также плотно занимается греблей на каноэ. Валерий старается участвовать во всех международных соревнованиях Европы и Азии. Он семикратный чемпион мира. ⠀ Напарнику Валерия - Сергею Викторовичу Точенову 64 года. Ветеран спорта, мастер спорта по каноэ. К гребле на каноэ привлёк всю семью и гоняется в двойке со своей внучкой. Многократный победитель международных соревнований и олимпиад. ⠀ В Новой Зеландии эти спортсмены выступали в одной лодке и стали олимпийскими чемпионами среди ветеранов. ⠀ Как им удаётся быть в такой отличной форме? Juli ein Markt, der sogenannte Magdalenenmarkt, der nicht nur am Liboritag selbst, sondern drei Tage vorher und drei Tage danach abgehalten werden sollte. Damit war das heutige Liborifest mit seiner kirchlichen und weltlichen Komponente entstanden. Das Stadtmuseum und das Stadt- und Kreisarchiv Paderborn nehmen das Jubiläum zum Anlass für eine große Ausstellung mit Katalog, natürlich über die Liborizeit. It happened when I was working at the magistrate’s court and my name at the time was Ray. We had another Ray in the security team so it used to get very confusing when people would radio through instructions. As I was already an Elvis impersonator, a solicitor friend suggested I change my name for real seeing as everyone called me Elvis anyway, and I thought…what a cracking idea. He actually paid for me to have it changed legally – so yes – I really am Elvis Presley! By night he’s a performer but by day, you can find Elvis helping customers at Brighton station. “I originally started working at the station as a search officer but a couple of years ago I witnessed an incident where a passenger unfortunately suffered a heart attack on the platform. I performed CPR and did everything I could try and save him but unfortunately, he was already gone. I received an excellence award for my actions and also received a very heartfelt letter from the man’s wife thanking me for all I had done. “It was a sad situation but because of the way I handled it, Southern offered me a full-time job with them at the gateline. I love working with people and having good laugh. Even on the busiest days, I have the megaphone and keep people entertained. It really helps my mental health being able to meet and chat to so many of our customers. “There’s a lot more people passing through Brighton station again now with pubs and hotels re-opened for business. I’m asking customers to keep their distance as much as possible because it really is important. The historic town hall and the belfry will be meticulously restored. The main entrance of the new town hall will be once again located on the Grote Markt. A new sustainable administrative building will be erected on the Botermarkt, which will be connected to the historic buildings via a central atrium. Zoe Welham developed an interest in bowel cancer while she was working on a complex scientific research project in graduate school. As the inaugural PhD recipient of The Penn Foundation Scholarship, Zoe’s research will provide valuable new knowledge regarding the biological rules that govern bowel polyp growth – something which is still not fully understood. Comparing the microbiomes of polyps at different risk levels for developing bowel cancer, Zoe’s research aims to better understand how the gut microbiome influences the growth of bowel polyps. Research that she hopes will ultimately lead to a reduction in bowel cancer. Zoe will work under the supervision of the Lawrence Penn Chair of Bowel Cancer Research, Professor Mark Molloy. The majority of funding comes from national charity Bowel Cancer Australia, which has committed $6.4 million to establish the Lawrence Penn Chair of Bowel Cancer Research and will be supported by additional funds of $4 million available to the University to advance research into bowel cancer. BE ON THE LOOKOUT!!! Hyannis FD has established a new bike unit. The bike unit will be out on patrol around the Main St and Harbor areas this summer on weekends. The unit will travel with 2 FF/EMTs and have basic life support capabilities. The goal is to supplement responses in high pedestrian and car traffic areas while being able to engage with the community. Thank you to Barnstable Police Department for allowing FF Riley and FF Omerzu to attend a quick training with them and allow us to borrow numerous bikes. Переплываем озеро, грузим лодки на крышу, едем в город за прицепом. Мечтаю об утреннем кофе и завтраке, но мы уже опаздываем и моя мечта разбивается впрах) За час до тура начинает лить дождь, уверенно и видно с серьёзными намерениями. . 20 минут до встречи с участниками, льёт уже не по-детски. Но никто не звонит и не выказывает сомнений, переживаю)) А точно ли сегодня есть тур😄 Приезжаем за 15 минут до, у причала под деревцем скромно стоят ребята, ждут нас, радостно приветствуют. Спросили только, что лучше надеть) . И погнали: с песнями у Авроры, с историями про сплавы на Алтае и по Волге! Mi rol en la fundación Senosayuda consiste en dar apoyo a los pacientes que acuden para la consulta de mastología. En ella valoramos a quienes quieren hacerse la pesquisa de cáncer de mama así como atendemos cualquier tipo de problema o enfermedad mamaria desde algún problema benigno de la mama hasta el cáncer de mama. Tengo 5 años en la fundación, siendo una de mis más agradables experiencia desde el punto de vista profesional y personal, que me ha permitido, atender de una forma solidaria a un gran número de pacientes, entre los cuales muchos con uno de los diagnósticos más temidos para las mujeres como es el cáncer de mama, que representa la primera causa de muerte por cáncer en las mujeres de nuestro país. De modo personal me ha tocado de forma muy cercana ya que mi mamá es una sobreviviente de cáncer de mama, y se la angustia que se vive cuando el paciente recibe este diagnóstico, así que el poder ayudar a otras mujeres con esta enfermedad es una experiencia humana única. El diagnóstico de un cáncer de mama no siempre es una sentencia de muerte y el tratamiento precoz es la principal herramienta para controlar esta enfermedad, recordando a las mujeres realizarse su autoexamen mensual y lo mas importante su control anual mastológico junto con su mamografía y eco mamario de acuerdo a su edad. Dazu gehören der weltgrößte Insulinhersteller Novo Nordisk, die Medizintechnikhersteller Ambu und Coloplast sowie die Biotechnologiekonzerne Genmab, CHR Hanssen und Novozymes. So saddened by the news that one of my coaches Gennadi Touretski has passed away over night. I have such fond and crazy memories of training under him. He was like a crazy professor of swimming. He helped me in so many ways in and out of the water, always encouraging growth and learning and reimagining the way we did things. He was always genuinely interested in how I was going in the years after my swimming was long gone. Last week an impromptu extraction mission took place right outside the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology. A total of 18 scooters were pulled from the harbor along with other foreign objects. 🛴The teams at Waterfront Partnership, IMET, Blue Water Baltimore and the National Aquarium worked together to get these objects out of the Inner Harbor. Bundespräsident Frank-Walter Steinmeier zeichnet im Schloss Bellevue zum diesjährigen Tag der Deutschen Einheit insgesamt 15 Menschen für ihr außerordentlich großes Engagement aus. Das Bundesverdienstkreuz geht unter anderen an den Virologen Christian Drosten, den ehemaligen Fußballprofi Thomas Hitzlsperger und an eine junge Frau aus dem Kreis Pinneberg: Die 17-jährige Halstenbekerin Hannah Kiesbye. Wie kam es dazu, dass Hannah bundesweit bekannt wurde und nun mit dem Verdienstorden ausgezeichnet wird? Vor ziemlich genau drei Jahren bastelte die damals 14-Jährige Schülerin zusammen mit einer Lehrerin eine neue Hülle für ihren Schwerbehindertenausweis. Schwerbehindert, das war für Hannah, die das Down-Syndrom hat, nicht richtig. Im Gegenteil: Hannah findet sich selbst Schwer-in-Ordnung. Und das sollte künftig auch auf ihrem Ausweis stehen. Ich möchte, dass mein Ausweis umbenannt wird, schrieb sie damals in einer Geschichte über ihre Idee, die in der Zeitschrift Kids Aktuell - Magazin zum Downsyndrom veröffentlicht wurde. Ich möchte, dass er Schwer-in-Ordnung-Ausweis heißt. Ein Twitter-User fand Hannahs Geschichte in der Zeitschrift und teilte sie in dem sozialen Netzwerk. Der Tweet wurde tausendfach weiterverbreitet und geliked. Er erreichte schließlich Sozialministerien in ganz Deutschland, die Hannahs Initiative aufgriffen. Heute gibt es ihre Schwer-in-Ordnung-Ausweishüllen in neun Bundesländern. Allein in Schleswig-Holstein wurden sie laut Sozialministerium etwa 500 Mal rausgegeben, deutschlandweit bereits mehr als 10.000 Mal. Dass Hannah für Ihre Idee zum Schwer-in-Ordnung-Ausweis einmal mit dem Bundesverdienstkreuz ausgezeichnet wird, damit hätte die junge Halstenbekerin nicht gerechnet, erzählt sie und freut sich auf ihren Termin mit Bundespräsident Steinmeier . Da werden Menschen ausgezeichnet, die etwas bewegt haben in der Welt, sagt sie stolz.
