THE ONLY GOOD INDIANS by Stephen Graham Jones is a brilliant work of horror fiction and an easy 5 stars from me. Jones is an amazing voice in horror fiction and I’m excited to dive into his other two books I have here. Often horror is a genre I’ve found hard to find diversity in especially own voices novels. I’m so glad we’ve seen horror books like TOGI and Mexican Gothic get mainstream attention in the past few months. I think if you’ve really enjoyed horror novels like Bunny by Mona Awad and/or The Cabin At the End of the World by Paul Tremblay then you’d really enjoy this one. It has the unique writing that’s in a league of its own that Awad showcases and the fresh twist on common horror tropes that Tremblay does so well. To top it all off, this is an own voices horror novel about 4 Native American men who belong to the Blackfeet tribe. Jones brilliantly touches on Native American issues and I still can’t get over how smart and well crafted this story is. We’ve seen Native American culture used as horror elements in King’s Pet Sematary (if you didn’t know, the Mi’kmaq tribe is a real tribe that King just used and not a lot of people really talk about it 👀😏) I’m not shaming anyone for enjoying PS, hell it’s in my top ten King’s, but if you’ve enjoyed that story then I do urge you to read own voices Native American literature and especially books like TOGI that shows how Native stories can effectively be used to convey horror stories. The ratings for this book have been all over the place and for some reason I’m drawn to books like that and I usually end up falling into the category of people who love these kinds of books. A lot of people have issues with the structure of this story. It’s definitely got a linear story but it does read like 2 (or 3) separate stories so I’d be cognizant of that before going in. I also saw some people weren’t fans of the amount of basketball in this story which is a lot. I’d recommend doing some research before reading as to why basketball is so important to Native communities. I did before reading and it made me appreciate those aspects of the book so much more. - @literary_thrills on Instagram
Dream job: no pants or shoes required🙅🏻♀️. I remember working in retail durning the summer and sweating my ass off because of the dress code requirements: shirts and pants had to be a certain length and all black all the time. I always wore pants because skirts that go to my knees look ridiculous on me and somehow the ac was ALWAYS broken! My feet would be so sore after walking literally miles pacing back and forth around the store wearing no support flat sandals or boots. I don’t want to dress a certain way to play a part in some office or for some job. I dress up when and how I want to not because I HAVE too. Favorite part about working from home is that I don’t have to wear pants or a shirt if I don’t want too! In fact the girls on my business calls and workout links are usually shocked if I’m wearing a top 😂 bless their souls they accept me for me💕. it’s a really really scary time to be Jewish right now. i’m sure i don’t need to go into detail of all the attacks and incidents that have happened over the last month, whether they be physical, verbal or property damage. (Two Chabad houses burned to the ground in an act of arson in the space of a few days, wtf?!). i want to talk about it and post about it but life right now is very odd and i’ve needed some time away. my head is clearing and hopefully i’ll be able to dive back into my activism work on here again soon. so in the meantime, here’s something i saw. i get asked this question on here at least five times a week and it makes me so sad: “I’m not a religious/practicing/matrilineal Jew, can i still celebrate Jewish holidays and wear a magen david?”. my love, a Jew is a Jew. it pains me so deeply to see that the Jewish community gatekeeping has gotten to the point where some Jews have to wonder if they’re allowed to express their Judaism as they want to. so to all the “wondering” Jews out there, wear that necklace. light those shabbat candles. use your hebrew name. make Jewish food. celebrate your history. do whatever you see fit to do, as it’s your culture and religion as much as every other Jews. your level of observance doesn’t make a difference over here, you’re a Jew and you’re loved and valid and accepted and i love u!! i just feel like this is something that some people needed to hear right now, especially with this scary and confusing period we’re in. stay safe, i’ll be back next week hopefully💗💓💞 - @jewishlgbt on Instagram

✖️Lay off the crunches!✖️ ⠀ 🔺Throughout my experience as a trainer, I’ve learned more and more about the core being more of a stabilizer. ⠀ 🔺In America, we already have too many people in hip flexion for the majority of the day (sitting 8+ hours) and experiencing low back pain. So crunches are not the best solution for “abs”. ⠀ ▪️Performing the correct “Deadbug”▪️ ⠀ 🔹Knees at 90 degrees. (Don’t bring the knees any higher than your hip joint) ⠀ 🔹Neutral spine. (There should be no arching of the spine here, which will want to happen.) ⠀ 🔹Arms vertical ⠀ 🔹Reach opposite limbs at the same time, then alternate. ⠀ 🔺I typically see lack of control in the lower lumber/pelvic region. The last 4 years have FLOWN BY (𝘐 𝘥𝘪𝘥 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳 1 𝘵𝘸𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘶𝘯𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩 𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘶𝘦𝘴 - 𝘋𝘔 𝘮𝘦 𝘪𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶 & 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘨𝘶𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦) and I honestly wish I would have slowed down a little bit more during all of it. Looking back, I felt the same way about college, high school, prior jobs, etc. It’s a chronic western society issue. As future doctors & medical professionals, we have an incredible amount of things on our To-Do list each day. 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱. @jvn would be so proud of me right now! ▫️A slow weekend morning with coffee ▫️a hike in nature ▫️listening to music while you get ready for the day ▫️driving around with the windows down ▫️treating yourself to a massage or a dinner out ▫️a walk around the block ▫️etc. The term “self care” as been blasted into the health & beauty industry as a way to profit off the stressful life Americans experience (& honestly, I wish our culture respected stillness more).
