Union’s oldest building briefly caught fire today. Lincoln Fire and Rescue was called to the Carnegie Building at 12:45 p.m. and quickly doused flames on the roof caused by a broken de-icing system. This was my last night out downtown before quarantine, having dinner to catch up with my high school English teacher, @ronvz_photography. For all my #Pocock peeps, y’all know him as Mr. Van Zutphen a.k.a Ron, and this moment has been almost 20 years overdue. If it wasn’t for this guy right here, I wouldn’t be in the #media & #entertainment #business. The moment he introduced me to the work behind #film, I dropped all my academic courses on calculus and finite and decided to pursue media in my last year of high school. If it wasn’t for that one big decision in my life, I wouldn’t have gone to @sheridan_college to take Media Arts and would have gone to university for engineering, accounting or business. I wouldn’t have met one of my best friends and co-founder @mauroisruiz , or my talented homie #director @thepeterhuang ... and @mad.ruk wouldn’t exist, other than a random German supplies website, that used to be madruk.com. Who knows where this road would have lead to, but definitely not where I am today. Ron always championed me ever since grade 9. I was never one to brag, but every time I went away for a world kickboxing tournament, he would tell student council to announce my championships on the P.A after the national anthem. You would think it was good PR as a freshman for older kids not to F around, but it actually encouraged a few punks to pick a fight, which is a story I’ll save for another day. But for a teacher to get into university and teach high school by only completing grade 9, I am truly inspired by you @ronvz_photography. As my brothers @mauroisruiz and @khaleed_juma continuously bring up, it’s not about being an #influencer with a shit ton of followers, it’s about the “influence” someone has. So kudos to all the other #teachers and people in the world who have influenced others and impacted people’s lives in any way. I’ve never cared much about money. For me, there are so many other delights in life more stable and enduring—family, writing, nature, exercise. But when a check for $150,000, drawn on the account of the royal family in Monaco arrives by overnight FedEx express, it gets my attention. So, here’s the story. I received a lovely email from Stefano Casiraghi, Jr., grandson of Prince Rainier and Princess Grace (you know, Grace Kelly, the stunning movie star of the 1950s). In his very gracious note, he explained that he is getting married in August and his fiancé Emilia is a huge fan of my work. He invited me to the wedding as a surprise for his bride, offering to pick up all my expenses and those of any family or friends I might wish to accompany me. If this wasn’t possible, a personally inscribed copy of one of my novels would suffice. Well, we’re in a pandemic, so of course I had to decline. But I offered to inscribe and send a novel. Stefano sent me a very nice email in reply, indicating that his assistant Lou would be in touch regarding the details for mailing the book and also to provide me with a suitable thank you offering. Lou contacted me immediately with his address in Falls Church, VA, directing me to send him the book and asking me for a good mailing address so that he could arrange for me to receive a cashier’s check in the amount of $150,000 as a thank you from Stefano. I protested that it was a bit extravagant, but Lou insisted and said the amount was to cover expenses should I decided to attend the wedding and if not and if the money seemed excessive, I could always give it to charity. A fine sentiment, I thought. Lou said the cashier’s check would arrive the following day. My grandma, the baby in this picture, was born in this farmhouse in Maxwell, New Mexico in 1894. . Her parents were from Golden, Colorado but her father had taken a job as the manager of the Farm Department of the Maxwell Land Grant Company, which owned nearly two million acres of land in northeast New Mexico. The job was difficult as it involved trying to make a profit for the company by irrigating extremely arid land. At the same time, company relations were not good with surrounding homesteaders, considered “squatters,” or with the original Apache inhabitants. . My great-grandfather only lasted about three years at the farm. He then tried running a hotel in nearby Springer, New Mexico, but moved the family back to Colorado by 1899. . In the photo, my grandmother sits in her mother’s lap surrounded by her father, brother and sisters – not to mention the many family dogs! The older couple are her father’s parents. They were both born in New England but moved west and operated a combined grocery and drug store in Golden for many years. When this picture was taken they were visiting their son and his family from their home in Pueblo, Colorado. One of my favorite all time trips was while working on the show “Ride with Norman Reedus” The Japan episodes. Tokyo-Mt Fuji and Kyoto-Osaka. Ryan Hurst was our guest rider in Tokyo. He was a gentile giant and one of the sweetest people to be around. Kunichi Nomura from Tokyo was giving us a tour around to some of his favorite spots on and off camera. Kun as he is affectionately known is one of my oldest friends that’s not from New York. For years I would visit Tokyo and Kun would have the best events and make me feel like I was at my second home. The entire crew looks back at this trip with fond memories of all the ups and downs. The episodes are just now being seen on Hulu in Japan so I felt like I should post a photo I’ve never posted that I took while I was supposed to be filming😬. Thanks Kun and everyone that put up with Gaijin shoving cameras in your faces for two weeks. Det enda hon visste var att hon blivit lovad ett jobb som au pair, men mannen som lurat hit henne skulle visa sig vara en tidigare dömd sexualbrottsling. I två månader bodde Serena hos Talita och medverkade i polisutredningen. Hon berättade att hennes högsta dröm var att få utbilda sig till polis, och med hjälp av stöd från Sverige blev drömmen till slut verklighet. Idag är hon gift med sin stora kärlek, har en liten dotter och arbetar som polis i Nepals huvudstad Katmandu. Flera kvinnor som kommit till oss genom åren har drömt om att bli just polis. En av anledningarna har, enligt dem själva, varit att de upplevt sig så väl behandlade av polisen i Sverige. En annan har varit att de verkligen vill vara med och aktivt bekämpa det hänsynslösa utnyttjande de själva utsatts för. Jenny är en av dem. Hon är uppvuxen i en helt vanlig svensk familj, men sexuella övergrepp i barndomen resulterade i att hon som tonåring hamnade i prostitution, och i samband med en polisanmälan slussades hon till Talita. Idag utbildar hon sig till just polis, något hon verkligen hoppades få möjlighet till när hon ingick i Talitas program. Vi är så fantastiskt stolta över Serena, Jenny och alla andra unga kvinnor vi fått förmånen att lära känna i Talita. Vi trodde på er. Ni trodde på er själva. One year ago the phone rang and I had only a minute to say goodbye to my Dad. Now, twelve months later, I wonder if he actually timed it perfectly to get out before the world went crazy and 2020 changed life forever. I also wonder if he had enough challenges and setbacks in recent years where he decided he needed a break and was finished with it all, and left it up to me and my sister to fend on our own and take care of each other. There are many days when I wish I could call and ask for advice on something, get his opinion, share a story, show him a newsclip, or even just have him call me a name and hang up on me for old times sake. There are also days when I can hear him saying how badly we are screwing it up, to calm down, figure it out ourselves and use common sense. Either way, I think he would be so proud of us for coming together as our family dwindles down to just me and my sister Samm Aversa and Sean Mott (with the many smiles). I think he would be proud of how we have done our best to get by these trying times and helping others and being there for each other. So many days this year when I was home alone for weeks, sad and depressed and not in a great mental place at all, it’s his tough love lessons, drive to survive and succeed, and push for perfection that helped me get up out of bed and help get my focus on so I can help others who were in a worst place than me. He would have demanded and appreciated decive action, goals and plans, and a drive to get through and come out the other side. Sometimes when we were having a hard time communicating some of the things he taught me made little sense - until this year. He constantly pushed us to be strong, overlook obstacles and to not let anything hold us back. While there could have been more warmth and dizziness, hugs aren’t going to get us through the crisis times we face each and every day now with no immediate end in sight. Maybe not only did he know what was coming and he left in time, but he knew what was coming and wanted to prepare us. Yesterday Grandpa Joe went to his forever home with Jesus. At the age of 6 the doctor told his mother he was going to die from bad asthma, but he went on to live another beautiful 93 years. Our appologies for not keeping yall up to date with our schedule and goings on. I know it appears that we have disappeared but as a family business, family comes first. As I mentioned in our last email, my father has been in the hospital in critical condition (non-covid) for the last two weeks. Yesterday he succumbed to his illness and is now in heaven with my mother. We will be taking this week off to make arrangements. Im not in the frame of mind to write anything lengthy but I would be remiss to mention how incredibly lucky to be brought up by an outstanding man. He was greatly loved by everyone that knew him and immediately liked from the very first handshake one would share with him. He taught me everything i know. He treated my wife like a daughter and taught me how to be a husband when i saw first hand how much he loved my mom through the thickest of times. He encouraged me in all of my interests and taught me the work ethic to see them through. He shared with me the love of grilling and the use of mesquite wood which we use today. Instead of discouraging me from leaving my good paying job for the uncertainty of self employment, he encouraged and cheered me on all the way. I know this a newsletter for a barbecue truck but I consider you all friends and family and wanted to share this with you. Thank you for your continued support. We will see you next week. Great catching up with Yingie! One of my oldest friends from med school. The man, the legend and my mentor during med school.. I can definitely say this as a matter of fact.. I am where I am in life thanks to this dude.. After I failed my Med stats exam in the first year.. which I had to resit, I pulled my socks up and decided to work smart for the next 4 years. Which meant, I stopped going to lectures and got all the notes from lectures from this dude as he was ahead of me at med school, all the exam questions from the years previous and studied differently. Which meant, I chilled out for all the terms except for the last when I would go into hiding and study like mad.. Ying’s notes and wisdom gave me wings to fly.. knowing I didn’t have to sit in lectures making notes (which I was rubbish at). His notes were perfect and beautifully hand written. Mine looked like something the dog crapped on 🤣🤣🤣. We all need mentors in our lives, I’ll always be grateful to Ying for helping me get through medical school and indirectly he helped me get to live the life I am living today.. Gratitude for having good ppl in my life.. Although we hadn’t seen each other for 3 years!
