As Samidoun Palestinian Prisoners Solidarity Network we stand full solidarity with Dr. Issam Hijjawi Bassalat and the Irish Republican prisoners, who have started a hunger strike on 16 September as protest against the isolation of Dr. Hijjawi Bassalat by the prison authorities. Dr. Hijjawi Bassalat, who is a prominent Palestinian community leader in Scotland, was arrested together with nine Irish republicans by the British MI5, the Irish Gardaí, Police Scotland, London’s Metropolitan Police, and over 500 officers of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) in the so-called “Operation Arbacia.” We demand the freedom of all political prisoners in Palestine and Ireland, and call upon their supporters to organize solidarity actions. Dr. Issam Hijjawi Bassalat, who is 62 years old, started his hunger strike on 16 September, as he was again forced into isolation in the filthy and unsafe Foyle House, a wing of Maghaberry prison in the north of Ireland. Irish Republican prisoners immediately engaged in a solidarity hunger strike to support Issam. Earlier that day, Issam’s bail was denied by the magistrate court. He will now proceed to the high court in order to await his trial in freedom. Dr. Issam Hijjawi Bassalat has multiple health conditions and has undergone an MRI scan this week. It is clear that for any person, let alone those who have health conditions, Foyle House is an unsafe prison. As the Irish Republican Prisoners Welfare Association (IRPWA) noted, “It is widely known that recently an O.D.C. prisoner who was on Foyle House had tested positive for Covid-19. Lets talk trail etiquette. LEAVE THE SIGNS ALONE! LEAVE TRAIL FEATURES ALONE! We know there are riders who dont like the directional routes in Durham Forest and Dagmar, but the rules are set out by the land owner. We dont own the trails. @mtbdurham doesnt own the trails. The government does, via @lakesimcoeconservation and @trca_hq They told @mtbdurham to make the trails directional. So volunteers went out and put up the signs so everyone could enjoy the trails. Thank you 😊 💓 🙏🏼 Unfortunately, some one or ones have been knocking the Durham Forest signs down or throwing them into the brush .. usually landing in poison ivy. Thats a dick move and needs to stop. If you absolutely MUST ride against the direction of everyone else, do so when you wont impact other trail riders. But leave the damn signs alone! To make things worse, people have been moving and removing trail features, such as log overs. Ride the trails, dont change the trails. Youre not helping. Youre not going to force change .. at least not good change. Volunteers are out replacing signs every couple of days now. This childish nonsense needs to stop before the land owners decide to just close access ... then we all lose. Thanks to everyone who maintains the trail systems we are lucky enough to enjoy. Corporate agribusiness entities have created a false moral imperative about feeding the world. Here are 3 reasons why Iowa doesn’t and shouldn’t aim to feed the world: 1. Farmers aren’t incentivized to grow food. People don’t eat soybeans and corn; corporate-owned pigs at factory farms do. Agribusiness interests incentivize the overproduction of these commodity crops to create cheap feed for corporate controlled factory farms, all while degrading our natural resources and hurting farmers who are forced to farm fence-row to fence-row to try to scrape by. Farmers receive prices lower than the cost of production, while all the profits go straight to the top. 2. This is rooted in racism and the patriarchy. The corporate-conservative agenda that puts profits before everything is deeply tied to the oppression of people based on the color of their skin, where they come from, and their gender. Our corporate-controlled agriculture system is no exception and is dependent on the division of everyday people based on perceived differences. At the root of this false narrative is the concept that white male farmers know best how to feed people all across the globe. These seeds grow the barriers that have kept Black farmers from land ownership since Emancipation. 3. Our highly industrial agriculture system is far less resilient than the smaller, regional and diversified family farm operations it replaced. Because of the rampant consolidation over the last 40 years, if one piece of the system is removed the whole thing crumbles. There is no flexibility. As a result during the COVID-19 pandemic, we see cars line up for miles outside of food banks across the country while farmers are forced to kill livestock, dump milk and waste food. Instead of corporations monopolizing a global market and having CEOs dictate how food should be grown “for the world”, we need to stop and re-evaluate how we do better. Just a few key elements to consider here. Communication research goes back more than 100 years. Put down the oversimplified pop science “just tell ‘em how much you care” stuff and dive in to actually strategy and you’ll realize how far we have yet to go to truly master this skill. Eventually, poor communication will cost all of us one or more of the following: a relationship, a job, money, an opportunity to help more people, or even a better understanding of ourselves. So why are so many reactive towards learning more about it? Because they don’t know what they don’t know. Ignorance is bliss, and when things fall apart, it’s always easier to blame the other person. True professionals take accountability. True professionals know skilled communication isn’t something we are just “born with.” True professionals invest in the intangibles. Listen, I get it. Nothing about communication seems sexy. Yet it underpins everything we do. I’m well aware training videos and flashy content gets more “likes” tags and shares. I could care less. My mission is to open people’s eyes to the seemingly little things that cost us a great deal everyday. Poor communication nearly cost me my life as a teenager. During a time when I needed it most, people couldn’t get through to me, nor could I get through to them. So I rotted in a hospital for nearly a year in total. Eventually I found a way out. This led me to going down a path in coaching so I could optimize the health and performance of others who needed help. What allowed me to do this wasn’t technology and fancy training methods, it was the ability to communicate, gain true buy-in and build relationships cultivated by urgency and transparency. Better communication = less wasted time, more goals achieved and yes- even lives saved. The pandemic we are experiencing is an example of this. What happens when people don’t understand what to do? They have to improvise and communicate to the best of their ability. Separate yourself by seeing what’s in front of you, not what is the flavor of the week.
