Freund Teaching Fellow at Washington University, a fellowship jointly sponsored by the Saint Louis Art Museum and the university’s Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts. . Throughout the academic year, I will be working with students in the MFA program through individual studio visits, class visits and critiques, artist lectures and presentations with local curators, and by teaching a series of professional practices workshops. . The fellowship will culminate with an exhibition of new work from “Every Breath We Drew” at the St. Louis Art Museum, opening in September of 2021. This is my project about Holocaust Survivors and their grandchildren. I thought I’d be able to continue creating images but the world has said otherwise so here they are. I began this because my grandmother is a Holocaust survivor and I wanted to focus on the beauty of the lives these individuals created beyond the trauma of their past but the meaning of this project feels like it’s changing. I think it’s really important to put this discourse into the world right now, not only because the elderly are heavily effected by Covid, but also because many of the people pictured are concentration camp survivors and survivors of a fascist government. They were interested in having their photograph taken because they wanted to solidify their stories and make sure that history wasn’t forgotten. It’s so devastating to see what’s happening in the world and in ICE detention centers. It feels like we didn’t learn from the past and we’re letting those who have survived down. I’m not really sure what to do with these images-I’ve been keeping them off insta because they feel so sacred- or how to fully explain how I feel about them in relation to the current state of our country but I know they’re important. This morning I was looking through my grandmother’s cook book ( actually looking for a bran muffin recipe) and found this little gem. What made me smile were the measurements- a Breakfast Cup and a Teacup were what they used to describe a quantity. I have always told my bakers “ just use a cup, any cup, as long as it is the same cup!” Well, apparently my Grandmother, who died two months before I was born, would not have agreed. (continued from previous post) In the Focus seminar at Ivy Ridge, we went through the “lifeboat process” where students had to face each other and tell them to die. So not only did this school pit students against each other, they also encouraged us to break each other down by any means necessary. I will never forget when the facilitator came over to me and told me to imagine that I was telling my own father to die. That maybe I should’ve died instead of him, because clearly I didn’t care enough about my life. She then added that perhaps my mother would even be happier if I had died rather than her husband. I even found seminar essays where I had to write the lie that it was MY FAULT my father died. I’m telling each and every one of you that, even as a young teenager, I knew what they were saying was COMPLETE NONSENSE. But still those words have remained with me, and visit me on the nights I can’t sleep. And still they come during my most quiet moments, in the silence and in the calm. What they said to me, however, was not even close to the worst thing I’d heard a facilitator say. They made students relive and/or in some way reenact terrible things that had happened to them. And it was because of that that many of us are still reliving those traumas to this day. I believe that it was in those seminars that our childhoods perished. And I mourn every moment of my life for each and every one of us who lost a part of ourselves in those seminar rooms. Every day there are more and more children enduring this exact same abuse in these boarding schools. Every day we let these schools slide under the radar, another child is developing PTSD. Every day a child’s life is changing, and not for the better. In addition, there are also parents and siblings who are being forced to attend these seminars as part of their students’ enrollment. I have been overwhelmed by kindness and gratitude for discussing my supposedly ‘early’ menopause (though I maintain it is more common in our 40s than we realise. Marc and his family are okay. The band and the crew are okay. So far all of us have made it through this very scary time. We all know people who have suffered with it and some of us have lost people to the virus. But as far as I know, our close friends and families are healthy. I hope – really hope – you are all playing by the rules and not being reckless. This virus is serious. You don’t want to get it. And staying healthy is really easy. Long post alert! Yesterday I drank way too much coffee and ended up staying awake most of night. I decided to take this time to declutter and went through hundreds of documents, news clippings, magazines, brochures, school papers, and a bunch of other random stuff I’ve collected over the years that I needed to get rid of. During my purge, I stumbled upon dozens of papers put together by my great grandmother specifically for me and my sisters, including a VERY detailed handwritten history of my dad’s side of the family, all the way back to 1850! My new Covid project is to digitize everything, including typing up the handwritten histories. Some of them have already been typed up, but there are errors, so I’m starting over. There’s a lot of repetitive documents, and some of the pages done in pencil have been worn away and I need to recover them somehow.
