Abuse at Academy at Ivy Ridge Part One Today I am sharing documents that detail ONE of MANY illegal and unspeakable incidents that occurred at Academy at Ivy Ridge. Upon leaving the school in 2005, a staff member stupidly shoved some of these reports into the binder in my duffel bag. I’ve had these papers in my possession for many years, wondering what exactly I should do with them. I feel that now is the time to share them with the world. My story goes as follows: I was sitting behind the staff desk being unnecessarily scolded and rolling my eyes at that (which I believe ended up antagonizing them more to do what they did to me). Nightly meds came around, handed out by staff that had no medical degree or training. All medications were given to students on a spoon with applesauce. This special procedure was to ensure students did not hide their medication under their tongue, hoarding a number of pills over a few days, and then try to overdose to get to a hospital for help. When it came to be my turn, I refused. It angered me that I was allowed no say in what I took and how much. I stated that this was MY body and I should have the power to make my own medical decisions. I was suddenly pushed out of the chair I had been sitting in. Two women far over 100 pounds heavier than me took turns sitting on my chest. These women were known around the facility for their painful restraint tactics and inappropriate strip searches. Students and other staff could clearly see the sick joy in their eyes as they would do these things, leaving children bruised, in tears, or both. They then began digging their hands into the sides of my cheeks. A little blood began to come out of my mouth. Since that didn’t prove successful, multiple people started taking turns HOLDING MY NOSTRILS CLOSED AND PRESSING ON MY MOUTH so that I couldn’t breathe. After suffocating me for a certain length of time, they would remove their hands and I would gasp for air. They used that opportunity to shove the pills into my mouth. I spit them out and began screaming. Students nearby were sobbing, knowing they were powerless to help me for fear of their own punishment. (Continued in next post) - @diana_nowak on Instagram

I’m doing @thebreathandtheclay’s #createanyway 10 day challenge. I missed posting yesterday’s even though I started it, so here’s the prompts from yesterday and today. Day 1 (Picture 1): 5x5x5x5 My word was “told” after picking up C. S. Lewis’s “A Grief Observed” (a fitting book for these days, I think) and this is a poem I wrote meditating in response to that word. Day 2 (Pictures 2 & 3): Found Markings I used a teabag from my favorite tea flavor (Fireside Vanilla SPICE thank you for asking 😉) and did a blind contour of these potted plants on watercolor paper. Today is Nadia Boulanger’s birthday. I studied with Nadia first during the summer of 1969, between my sophomore and junior years at Oberlin. I was with her in Paris for six weeks in July and August. My then girlfriend Vicki came with me, and studied with the great French organist André Marchal. It was in many ways the most important summer of our lives. (Vicki and I got married that December!). I would return to study with her again in 19701-71 on a Watson Fellowship. I wrote Nadia as soon as I got back to the US, and received the following letter dated September 20, 1969. I was 19 years old. This letter is among my most prized possessions. It seems we are approaching a second wave of Coronavirus, which feels a little more scary this time? I don’t think I’m the only one who feels like this is never ending and I imagine there will be more announcements this week/ next. The book is called “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy Today I woke up feeling pretty down because I really thought we were getting back to normal but it looks like we might be going into another lockdown 😢 When I read this book this morning it made me realise that I can still be happy by focusing on the things I love that are under my nose❤️ Things I love... interacting with people (in person or by technology), helping others, creating content for you guys, my health & fitness, food, drink... my list could continue. I was thinking a lot lately when I should end my counter. A lot happened in the last few days in Germany. Masks are still mandatory in stores & public transit etc. And there is still a required distance of 6ft whenever possible. BUT we got restaurants back last weekend and today I had my first field hockey practice again. The Bundesliga restarted and I’ve met a couple of my friends – in small groups – over the weekend. Long post alert! Yesterday I drank way too much coffee and ended up staying awake most of night. I decided to take this time to declutter and went through hundreds of documents, news clippings, magazines, brochures, school papers, and a bunch of other random stuff I’ve collected over the years that I needed to get rid of. During my purge, I stumbled upon dozens of papers put together by my great grandmother specifically for me and my sisters, including a VERY detailed handwritten history of my dad’s side of the family, all the way back to 1850! My new Covid project is to digitize everything, including typing up the handwritten histories. Some of them have already been typed up, but there are errors, so I’m starting over. There’s a lot of repetitive documents, and some of the pages done in pencil have been worn away and I need to recover them somehow. La sua preparazione è come una seduta di allenamento visto che va mescolata rigorosamente a mano per almeno 30 minuti!!! TORTA PARADISO (ricetta della Zefferina) Ingredienti: - 3 etti di fecola di patate - 3 etti di zucchero - 2 etti di burro - 3 uova - Un po di buccia di limone grattugiata - Una bustina di lievito per dolci Preparazione: Si impastano assieme lo zucchero e il burro e, quando sono bene amalgamati, si aggiungono le uova, una alla volta, continuando a mescolare senza mai fermarsi per circa 30 minuti. Successivamente si aggiunge la farina e la scorza di limone, continuando sempre a mescolare (perché più si mescola, più la torta viene buona!). Alla fine si aggiunge la dose. Marc and his family are okay. The band and the crew are okay. So far all of us have made it through this very scary time. We all know people who have suffered with it and some of us have lost people to the virus. But as far as I know, our close friends and families are healthy. I hope – really hope – you are all playing by the rules and not being reckless. This virus is serious. You don’t want to get it. And staying healthy is really easy. Just wear a piece of cloth over your nose and mouth, stay 6 feet away from people and stay home as much as you can. That doesn’t seem like a lot to ask. Thirty-five years ago, Mr. LaGrega was my 5th grade teacher. He was the first person who told me I could write. In the 6th grade, my father grew ill from kidney disease, and come junior high, which is hard for most kids, I felt increasingly socially separate as he went through his treatments. It was a terrible time and it only got worse after he passed away and my mother dealt with depression. No matter how deeply depressed I was, I kept that feeling inside that there was something special about my writing, and it gave me a vision for my future. I was so full of happiness when I went to graduate school for writing—I thought that I was ready to start publishing in my 20s and Id finally have a sense of the life I was always meant to live. But when my mother passed away the day of my MFA graduation, I was derailed. After her death, I was completely on my own, just like the character of Lauren in my book, The All-Night Sun. No money, no family. Sometimes I look back and think how on earth did I survive? When I sent Mr LaGrega my novel, he received it with such love. I told him that when I was little, he gave me a gift of believing in myself that saw me through the rest of my life. I told him it was like he was holding one side of a long thread connected to this little elementary school autograph book. And I was holding the other side of the thread my whole life. This morning I was looking through my grandmother’s cook book ( actually looking for a bran muffin recipe) and found this little gem. What made me smile were the measurements- a Breakfast Cup and a Teacup were what they used to describe a quantity. I have always told my bakers “ just use a cup, any cup, as long as it is the same cup!” Well, apparently my Grandmother, who died two months before I was born, would not have agreed. 💙• • • • • Maybe it’s the unlikely story she had that led to her using her talents to write in dissent her (and our) vision of the law for the future. Maybe it’s the fact that the most brilliant person to come through Columbia Law, our alma mater, was this funny, bright, kind, little woman. Maybe it’s the tireless advocacy she committed herself to so that someday women would make up 50% of the law school class. There is something about Justice Ginsburg that drives, inspires, and resonates with me and so many of my peers. But, for today and for me, it’s the fact that we walk behind her after she opened the door, and in this final year, earn our degrees and wear the same robes. I would not be here if it weren’t for her, both personally and professionally. She matters to me and the path I took in ways I can never express. There’s this deep personal grief today, and it’s paired with the fact that we can’t collectively grieve and hug each other. And our collective grief for each other, for who she was and the remarkable life she lived, for what she means to people and some semblance of democracy we might have had, is immeasurable. WARM WEATHER ☀️ 18.09 ☀️ PRE SAVE LINK IN BIO ☀️ March 2018, on a flight to Bergen, Norway. First time leaving in London in years and full of self doubt believing I wasn’t worthy of travelling abroad and spending money on a flight to write music. The day I arrived, I headed to the studio (swipe for view) and met @producedbymagnus . I asked myself why I was tense with worry, when the day and the setting was completely idyllic. In that moment, the whole lyric of what then became the song ‘Warm Weather’ poured out of me. “It’s no wonder that I’ve been acting cold under this warm weather, living in the shade I tell myself that I’m not enough, I’m scared of opening up to this warm weather”. The birth of this song changed my whole approach to songwriting and has helped me surrender to the moment ever since. I’m super stoked to share with you that I’m starting a worship project under my first name Judah. A lot of ways this is a big coming home for me as I learned music and my ‘voice’ by fumbling through the guitar leading worship at my uncle’s church back home in Cookeville, TN. 1st I get that church, “religion,” even talks of Jesus can be divisive as so many, including myself, have been hurt by people in the church. This project isn’t about perfection, nor intended to be an impeccable source of theology but my stories of pain, doubt, brokenness, etc, completely in need of a God who loves and adores me. Second.. This project’s culture will be rooted in love and the overwhelming reality of God’s love toward us. Even to have to write out that ALL are invited into His love is crazy to me. But all are welcome and accepted in the culture as God’s grace and love toward us is bigger than any of us can imagine. I think Bono said it best when he claimed “The music that really turns me on is either running toward God or away from God. Both recognize the pivot, that God is at the center of the jaunt.” This project will be both! Lastly. This. is. just. who. I. am. There came a point this year when a friend’s suicide sent me into a depressed spiral I could not physically pull myself out of. That’s where worship began again for me. A broken human in need of Jesus’ unapologetic, unwavering, constant love, hope, peace, grace for me. And as I pondered all that He’s done for me I came to a place where I had to share it with you. Schlumberger lent her empty 17th-century Paris hotel particulier as the location for the now iconic show, which was designed with the help of André Leon Talley, Amanda Harlech, and Steven Robinson. . . Steven’s collection extends beyond clothing to fashion artefacts such as these invitations. I love them because they represent that a fashion show can transport people into a different world. The narrative of the collection can start with a key or some music, continue with the clothing and then live on, as a memory for years to come.
