Shark finning is one of the world’s most destructive fishing practices. According to the Hong Kong Shark Foundation, more than 100 million sharks are caught worldwide every year for their fins and other products, while more than 50% of the world’s shark fin is traded through Hong Kong alone. Now, a new study by researchers at the Florida International University (FIU) has found that much of the shark fin sold in Hong Kong contained unsafe levels of mercury, exceeding government limits. “The mercury levels are, on average, six to 10 times higher than what is considered a safe level of mercury,” says FIU student marine biologist Laura Garcia Barcia, one of the study’s co-authors. Today marks the first community research dive of our long term collaboration with @asc_sharkstudies and @finalliance !!! We’re so stoked on the technology and research we are actively participating in! The research being conducted aims to record the diversity, abundance, and distribution of sharks over time and space using a modified Underwater Visual Census (UVC) method. We record data on the environmental conditions like water temperature and current speed, and once in the water, we will be using a camera with paired lasers to capture images of each shark. The lasers are a known distance apart and will show up on the image as two green dots so when the image is analyzed, ASC scientists can get an accurate total length measurement of the sharks, which also helps to determine their age. You will spend the day with members of the ASC research team, helping collect and log data points, and capturing images of the sharks themselves. - @sharkaddictsdiving on Instagram

Hawaiians have perhaps the most lore and rich traditions around sharks, according to Baughman. Most of its islands had their own shark god or totem and temples were built in their honour, where they were worshipped. One myth tells how Keali’ikau ’o Ka’u fell in love with a human and gave birth to a green shark that would help people trapped at sea. Another concerns a woman who freed herself from a shark that had taken her from the waves by proclaiming to him that he was her aumakua (family god). He let her go on condition she marked herself with a tattoo of his teeth on her foot so that he and others may recognise her as protected. And this is why some people tattooed this symbol on their feet. Myths and legends are an important part of our meaning-making and have the power to shape how we relate to the world around us. Repost from @atlantic.owt.collaborative • We don’t just encounter oceanic whitetips during our research expeditions. We’ve tagged tiger, blue, silky and reef sharks. During our time on or in the water we’ve also seen blue marlin, spearfish, mahi mahi, yellowfin tuna, beaked whales, dusky sharks, nurse sharks and a whale shark. In 2013 we captured and tagged a juvenile tiger shark out in the deep blue. A few days later we swam with the same tiger in shallow sandy bottom waters. Then we encountered the same shark again, swimming into Hawks Nest Marina. Three encounters in three different environments spanning 17 nautical miles over a period of a few days. For those of us who have been fortunate to travel and explore diving locations around the world their tends to be a couple spots, maybe one dive or a collection of moments that come to mind, when asked where your favorite dive spot is. Happy Sharkweek! 🦈 Great hammerheads are vulnerable to overfishing. They are caught incidentally and commercially targeted for their valuable fins in longline, bottom trawl, gillnet and hook-and-line fisheries. Great hammerheads are particularly threatened by the global shark fin trade because of the large size of their fins. More than 90 percent of great hammerheads die once they are captured by targeted or incidental fisheries. This high mortality rate, along with the shark’s coastal habitat and highly valued fin, makes the great hammerhead shark endangered with extinction. Story time! Everyone knows Im crazy about shark teeth. I didnt start hunting for them in the wild until last year... but when I first started diving I volunteered as a diver at the aquarium back home (@newport_aquarium). As a volunteer I helped out with lots of tasks like preparing food, feeding some of the animals, and maintaining their habits (aka cleaning the glass and the gravel lol). Sometimes after we were finished with the tasks that needed to be completed that day, we would get to look for sharks teeth in the big tank (that was obliviously full of sharks lol). At the time, the tank had sandtiger sharks (pictured), sandbar sharks (pictured), shark rays (bowmouth guitarfish), white and blacktip sharks, nurse sharks, zebra sharks and juvy scalloped hammerheads. My collection started out with the bright white teeth from some of these beautiful creatures the aquarium took such great care of. Sou fã do programa Shark Tank, ambos, o do Brasil e dos EUA.
