We just got back from Isla Guadalupe, and it was an experience that was better than I could have imagined! Ive never felt a deeper respect for an animal than that I have for the white sharks! Great Whites have a very particular media presence that is usually associated with fear, but actually being eye to eye with them is nothing short of breathtaking! They are strong and powerful, yet there is so much more to them than meets the eye. They are the heart of our oceans- the heart of our blue planet. And they are now very deeply rooted in my own heart as well!🌊🌎 I think Mimis grinning almost as hard as I was every day just thinking about her!😉 Ill be dreaming about this face for a looong time!!💙 P.S. Over the past 32 years sharks have been brought a whole lot of glory with their own “Shark Week” on the Discovery Channel. Reaching over 35 million viewers every year, all of this attention comes with both good and bad and the consequences of shark week have become more controversial in the eyes of conservationists. . The fearful mentality and constant talk about “shark attacks” however, has had some negative impacts on the way that sharks are widely perceived. In a world where over 100 million sharks are killed each year and populations are rapidly declining it is more important than ever that we quickly shift from the unrealistic monsters we make them out to be to a more accurate depiction of the animals that are the backbone of marine ecosystems. . What can you do to help? Let @discovery know that you understand the importance of sharks and how imperative it is that a conservation mentality is applied to shark week. Today Im reflecting on my life in the past year to now. Remembering why I am thankful and what has brought me here. The challenges and mentally hard times. 10 months ago I broke my elbow, spent 2 months on disability, only to be offered the opportunity of a lifetime and made the best decision of our lives to be where we are right here in Florida with sharks. Tanner and I spent many nights drinking tea manifesting our future to exactly where we are now. Crazy as some may think I absolutely believe this journey is from our inability to believe we would stay where we were working the jobs we had. Just the time we took to remember we were grateful for what we had for the friends and family we had and where we wanted to be lead us to where we are now. So remember to take time to stay grateful and thankful for life’s journey wherever you may be in that journey the universe will make your wildest dreams come true if you believe and work hard ✨ . As of yesterday Florida became the 15th state in America to ban the import and export of Shark fins!! The new law prohibits the import, export and sale of shark fins in Florida. Violators could be charged with a misdemeanor, and face a fine of up to $9,500 for repeat violations and license suspension or revocation. Shark fins are used to make soup which is popular in China. The shark fin prohibition in Florida takes effect on October 1. We’d like to take this opportunity to call out Australia on its outdated shark net laws. #BabyShark 🦈 This little guy was hooked right in the front of the mouth for an easy hook removal! The shark was just under 5.5 feet and very feisty. Jose was able to keep the shark’s head stable while I kept the body under control from the tail. Then once the shark was kept calm the tag was inserted right next to the front dorsal fin! . . This little shark had quite the teeth! Sand Tiger Shark’s are notorious for having gnarly teeth that don’t line up with each other, but overlap instead similar to the Mako shark. Sand Tiger’s teeth are designed for tearing flesh from bone instead of ripping limbs off with jaw pressure like other species do. The Sand Tiger Shark is a globally endangered species, which is why my team and I take great care to keep the animals in the water while tagging them for tracking and migratory patterns for the #NOAA Apex Predator Program! . . Todays #SaturdaySpotlight goes to our sandtiger shark, Swaj! 🦈 Swaj is the only sandtiger shark we currently have in our larger Shark Exhibit. This exhibit is the largest one in the aquarium, holding 58,000 gallons of water and various species of shark and bony fish. Swaj arrived at the aquarium in May of 2004 from Long Island Aquarium. At that time he was only around 46 inches long and 18 lbs 👶🏻Now hes almost 6.5 feet long and over 150 lbs! Swaj is the slowest swimming shark in the exhibit. He likes to take his time with everything and is the most courteous shark we have. He definitely doesnt live up to his name, which is Jaws spelt backwards. Swaj and Luseal, as well as some of our other animals, are all available for adoption through our Adopt-an-Animal program. This sponsorship program helps our conservation efforts here at the aquarium and around the world. The island is home to one of the most important populations of Great White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias) in the world, and due to the water conditions, it is considered maybe the best place in the world to cage dive with this particular species. The Great White season in Guadalupe Island goes from August until October each year, and no diving experience is required to carry on with the activity and rejoice in the presence of the King of the Oceans. RIP MICHAEL CHAPMAN (1935-2020). Sad News, Steven Spielberg’s camera operator on JAWS passed away today. Chapman wasnt just a camera operator on Jaws, he was a renowned cinematographer - perhaps best known for majestic beauty of his black and white photography in Raging Bull - but also was on the same duties on Scorceses Taxi Driver, the 1978 remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Lost Boys, Scrooged and The Fugitive to name but a few. They are caught incidentally and commercially targeted for their valuable fins in longline, bottom trawl, gillnet and hook-and-line fisheries. Great hammerheads are particularly threatened by the global shark fin trade because of the large size of their fins. More than 90 percent of great hammerheads die once they are captured by targeted or incidental fisheries. This high mortality rate, along with the shark’s coastal habitat and highly valued fin, makes the great hammerhead shark endangered with extinction. Traveling to these latitudes after a journey of more than 20 hours allows you to observe unique and pristine environments such as Guadalupe Island. White sharks come to this volcanic island according to their sex and age. 🦈DEBATE TIME🦈 Cool or negative? Join the debate. Our observations... We always criticize how our society has contributed to the negative portrayal of sharks. Starting with the obvious Jaws movie, continuing with shark encounters, with surfers and finishing with the classic biting shark image we all have in mind from cage diving (we dont really know how to categorize this experience BTW). On the other hand, there is a whole diving community, that admires these creatures and tries to educate students and fellow divers about not only their importance to the ecosystem but the mistaken image they have so unwillingly earned. 🦈 BUT... Here we go... 🦈 What about those funny shark costumes and accessories that feed off that exact negative shark image? You know what we mean, right? The shark sleeping bag, shark slippers, the jaws costume (the one that looks like you are being eaten by Jaws himself), or those funky wine glasses with the shark fins rising from the inside (of course the redder the wine, the better)... We might find these personally cute or funny, however, isnt it a bit contradictory we find these products cute or funny, even though we, as dive professionals, understand they represent and foment an exaggerated or even an unreal image of sharks? We would love to hear your thoughts on the matter, and please dont get us wrong, we are not trying to offend anybody here.
