#tbt In keeping with the celebration of Nigerias independence today via @the.kraal --- Carlota Lucumi: Another Important Ancestor. Born in the Kingdom of Benin (located in present-day Nigeria), Carlota Lucumi was kidnapped as a child by spaniards and brought to Cuba. Living and working on the Triumvirato plantation, she was harvesting sugar cane in horrible and inhuman conditions. As she grew older, she began to plan an uprising alongside another woman named Firmina. If the latter was captured before the start of the revolt, Carlota was able to use of her genius and musical gifts to communicate with the other slaves through a talking drum. When hearing the sounds of the drum, the plantation owners thought that Africans were paying homage to their ancestors, while it was a way for them to communicate with each other. Using the talking drum, she was able to coordinate the revolt. On November 3, 1843, Lucumi along with other leaders known as Filip, Narcisco, Manuel Ganga, and Eduardo, led a raid which initiated what would be known as the Triumvirato Rebellion. With her machete only, she led the attacks, personally freeing many captives, burning the house that was used to torture people, killing the overseer’s daughter, and then forcing the owner of the Triumvirate plantation, to leave. Carlota and her followers were able to destroy five sugar plantations, as well as a number of coffee and cattle estates. Although stories of her capture and execution differs, it is said that realizing that the movement was gaining control of much of the land, the Spanish started a bloody manhunt to find the revolutionaries. Carlota was tortured, tied to horses and dismembered to discourage other Africans to continue the fight she had initiated. However, her actions created a powerful legacy that inspired numerous revolutionary movements against plantation owners in the Caribbean. Today, there is a monument in her honor amidst the ruins of the Triumvirato sugar mill in the province of Matanzas, Cuba, the plantation where the revolt started.
