BLACK GODDESS
This is my dear friend Melissa, and she’s wearing this fall’s “full heart” t-shirt (only 20 left!). Melissa & her husband Nick live in our neighborhood, and have been a part of our neighborhood @weare_heartland small group since we moved here. When I first met Melissa, we were both pregnant with our boys, and Melissa had just decided to leave her corporate job (with lots of money & lots of responsibility) because she felt God was calling her to stay home with her kids — a wild, drastic change from her currant life. A few weeks later, she & Nick received the news of Augie’s Down Syndrome diagnosis, and welcomed it with open arms & loving hearts. But that wasn’t all, Augie also had a heart defect, and a syndrome involving his GI system & both made his health extremely critical. He had a 50% survival rate, and we watched in those months before and after Augie’s birth as they walked through uncertainty after uncertainty, hospitalizations, home nursing, surgeries... I felt so guilty that my son, Phoenix, was just fine, while Melissa’s son was fighting to stay alive with every breath. Oh, the things we don’t know until hindsight, right? Often times, we want God to tell us our future. I know I do. But now, I know that He doesn’t because the truth is, we couldn’t handle it. We couldn’t handle the bigness of it. Not the intense beauty or intense pain People say that God only gives you what you can handle. I disagree. Melissa and I can both tell you, we’ve come completely undone. I would say, instead, that you can’t handle what God gives you until you have to. Until you have no choice, because it’s all you have. I’ll tell you this though — Augie is thriving, Melissa became president of the Down Syndrome Diagnosis Network, began Wonderfully Made — the special needs ministry at our church, & she is also my Business Manager (you know, in her down time). Who knew 5 years ago that Melissa would begin a ministry that my daughter would be a part of? God did. I’m so glad I didn’t. But this is the life, right? Broken, Beautiful, and too big to comprehend the story He is writing. Melissa is the epitome of “full heart”. This is Willy Monteiro Duarte, a 21 years old Italian originally from Cape Verde, who was found beaten to death in Colleferro near Rome. He was murdered by a group of racists affiliated with fascists neo-nazis. This is a racially motivated crime. Italy is racist, it’s always been racist, and this is just one of the most recents attacks on blacks. I was attacked as well in Milano when I was 15 years old by a 26 years old Neo-nazi woman and I’m just lucky to be alive today and be able to say it. I always thought that my attack was nothing important, I didn’t think about it that much until I became an adult and started working on my traumas. Italians don’t care, all they do is post a black square, post a photo of their black friends to gain a bunch of likes and go back to their carefree lives. Hypocrites. They don’t protest, they don’t speak up, there are not white allies in Italy and many people of color don’t have the courage to talk. Many people make the wrong assumption that you have to be overweight to be diagnosed with PCOS, but that is absolutely not the case. Up to 30% of women with PCOS maintain a normal weight. These women face the same PCOS challenges that other women face, things like fertility challenges, increased androgens, and the resulting symptoms (like acne, unwanted hair growth, hair loss, etc.), and an increased risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease, which we have covered in a few of our previous posts. Since PCOS is normally associated with obesity, many women who are lean tend to be overlooked and can go undiagnosed for years. The diagnosis for diabetes and heart disease are also delayed in these women as well. If you feel like you are exhibiting the symptoms of PCOS, send us your questions. We suggest always being an advocate for yourself to make sure you fully understand the nuances of how your health parameters affect your reproductive and overall general health. Happy Hump day! @marlonwayans and I met on the set of the “Wayans Brothers” in the fall of 1995. In these 25 years since we have worked together several more times and it’s been great. But when we did the “Marlon” show for NBC things changed. Friends became family and adding @breshawebb and @diallo multiplied our love laughter and respect exponentially. Over the last 4 years we have supported each other through moments of disappointment celebration and tragedy. I still get the surprised look from people when they ask me what I do for a living and I tell them I’m an Orthodontist. “Oh you’re a technician!” No, I’m a doctor. My answer is usually followed by a blank stare, a confused look and on the rare occasion a smile of approval and the question that never fails to come after – What made you become an Orthodontist? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The short answer is that I really enjoy creating beautiful smiles and improving one’s self-confidence and self esteem. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The real answer is that it allows me to combine all my strengths to fulfill a life purpose. I am able to use both sides of my brain simultaneously: the analytical and the creative. It allows me the freedom to express my personality, one that is very laid back (must be the island girl in me) but also type A when it comes to details, systems and organization. It challenges me and excites me. It also draws upon my life goal of being a change agent. After living in the UK for over twenty years, I gave my job 3 months notice that I was not only leaving but I was also moving to Trinidad!
