A Purple Rhinopias sits waiting upon the seafloor for a snack to approach in the waters of the Lembeh Strait, Cocotinos, Sulawesi, Indonesia. These amazingly colourful seacreatures are a macro scuba divers holy grail of finds. At around the size of a grapefruit or orange they are simply stunning to behold. On this dive our guides knew exactly where a small community of these animals had recently been seen. Famous for having some of the prettiest beaches in Mexico, it is also home to seasonal aggregations of juvenile whale sharks (Rhincodon typus). These animals enter La Paz Bay in order to feed, and its season goes from October until April. Heard that there were a couple of Grey Nurse sharks hanging round the bay so had to jump in and have a look around. Every single time that theyve been around they always manage to elude me, except for this time. Jumped in the water swam out about 50 metres and stumbled across a juvenile straight away. It’s a tuna! It’s a baby whale! No, it’s… AN OCEAN SUNFISH!! We’re excited to welcome a Mola mola back to our Open Sea Exhibit! This young mola comes to us from Carmel Bay. They’re only 3-4 years old and weigh about 34kg/75lbs. We’re the only aquarium in North America to exhibit these sensitive animals, thanks to our proximity to their habitat. Sunfish are temporary guests at the Aquarium. Our dedicated sunfish aquarists train them to swim over to us to be hand-fed a specialized “mola sausage” that mimics their wild meals of jellies, shrimp and other invertebrates. Once they grow to be around 230kg/500 pounds, or if their behavior changes letting us know they’re ready to go, we release them back to the wild with tags allowing us to find out how large they’ve grown should someone come across them again. Mighty molas are often seen in Monterey Bay from whale watching boats, especially when jellies are close to the coast, and beachgoers commonly find carcasses of young ones washed up on the beach, usually after a sea lion had some mola munchies. Ocean sunfish are found in temperate seas around the world and two separate species can be found in Monterey Bay: The common sunfish Mola mola and the recently discovered Hoodwinker sunfish, Mola tecta. Famous for being the heaviest bony fishes in the ocean, multiple Mola species reach 2,300kg/5,000lbs, and the title goes back and forth between the bumphead sunfish M. alexandrini and M. mola as new leviathans are discovered.) Have you ever heard of a Brooding Anemone (Epiactis lisbethae)? This is a fascinating species I photographed in Gods Pocket in British Columbia, Canada and have never seen or even knew existed before. What makes this anemone so special is how she fertilizes eggs inside herself and then when the babies are big enough, they swim out and attach themselves to the mother under the protection of the tentacles! Then, once they grow up a little bit more, they swim off and plant themselves in a new home! Nature is fascinating!!! I have to thank Jackie @themarinedetective for showing me my first one and then later explaining what the heck I was looking at and taking pictures of. #DYK, while red abalone (Haliotis rufescens) used to be abundant along the California coast between Mendocino County and San Luis Obispo, they are now a more rare sighting, experts believe as a result of over harvesting. Abalone are characterized by their strong muscular foot and large shell, with their ability to suction onto rocks as their main defense against predators. Once they have clamped down, it’s difficult to move them. They are capable of moving around along the seafloor but tend to remain in the same small area for their entire lives! As a result of this sedentary lifestyle, they can easily become covered with marine growths and serve as refuge for other small creatures like algae, sponges, barnacle, bryozoan and hydroids. In fact, as many as 90 species of small gastropods have been found living on one shell! 😮 ~~~ Since the recent collapse of kelp forest along the northern California coast, distributions of intertidal organisms in the area like abalone, sea stars, and sea urchins have changed dramatically. To help understand the worrisome changes occurring along our shoreline habitat, Greater Farallones Association is joining researchers at Multi-Agency Rocky Intertidal Network - MARINe (@marine_pacificrockyintertidal) to monitor several sites for abalone, sea urchins, and sea stars through our LiMPETS Monitoring program (@limpetsnews). Dumbo Octopus . Grimpoteuthis is a genus of pelagic umbrella octopuses known as the dumbo octopuses. The name dumbo originates from their resemblance to the title character of Disneys 1941 film Dumbo, having a prominent ear-like fin which extends from the mantle above each eye. There are 13 species recognized in the genus. Prey include crustaceans, bivalves, worms and copepods. The average life span of various Grimpoteuthis species is 3 to 5 years. . They are some of the rarest of the Octopoda species though they occur worldwide including in the waters of New Zealand, Australia, Monterey Bay, Oregon, Philippines, Marthas Vineyard, Papua New Guinea and Azores. The largest dumbo octopus ever recorded was 1.8 metres (5.9 ft) in length and weighed 5.9 kilograms (13 lb). The average size for most species is 20–30 centimetres (7.9–12 in) in length. Happy Shark Awareness Day! Today we want to celebrate some of the lesser known species of shark native to the coastal waters of California. Like brown smoothound, soupfin, spiny dogfish, leopard, and swell sharks, all abundant in California waters. Most shark species are not dangerous to humans and the beautiful angel shark is one of them. If you were a small fish cruising near the sandy bottom you COULD be in danger though. The angel shark is an ambush predator with a lightening quick gulping reflex. It lays on the bottom motionless and covered in sand all day waiting for an opportunity to surprise and snap up any unsuspecting fish swimming by. The prey preferences of these smaller species of sharks typically include small fish and invertebrates, such as shrimp, crabs, lobsters, and some mollusks. Allí, entre la protección de láminas y estipes de los huiros, se desarrollan las nuevas generaciones de pintarojas • 📷🐟🇨🇱 Do sharks really exist in the Chilean coast? • They actually do! One doesnt need to dive deeper than 10 meters nor swim more than 25 mts away from the coastline to gaze at a shark species which inhabits the shallow subtidal environment; namely, the famous “Pintaroja” [Schroederichthys chilensis] • These incredible animals live associated with the Chilean Kelp forests, where they often swim around in search for prey such as crabs or mollusks. Happy Monday! The majority of sharks are less than 2 meters long, yet get far less exposure. Check out the great info by @sharks4us on the Brownbanded BambooShark / Chiloscyllium punctatum While baby-juvenile, their dark-brown bands are quite noticeable, as they grow up their color gets lighter. 🤩SWIPE TO SEE SOME SHARK EMBRYOS! 🤩 🔔 🔔 🔔 🔔 🔔 The Bamboo Shark family (same as the Epaulette sharks) have strong, muscular leg-like paired fins which they can use to walk in the bottom and to clamber on reefs and crevices. Some sharks, like the Brownbanded BambooShark can survive SEVERAL HOURS OUT WATER! 🔔 🔔 🔔 🔔 🔔 They live in shallow waters specially on reefs, when the tide goes low some get trapped in small pools, for a while thats ok👌🏽 But Oxygen runs out eventually...
