A Purple Rhinopias sits waiting upon the seafloor for a snack to approach in the waters of the Lembeh Strait, Cocotinos, Sulawesi, Indonesia. These amazingly colourful seacreatures are a macro scuba divers holy grail of finds. At around the size of a grapefruit or orange they are simply stunning to behold. On this dive our guides knew exactly where a small community of these animals had recently been seen. Jumping into the water opposite a container loading port to find a rare seacreatures was definitely a unique and fantastic experience. It’s a tuna! It’s a baby whale! No, it’s… AN OCEAN SUNFISH!! We’re excited to welcome a Mola mola back to our Open Sea Exhibit! This young mola comes to us from Carmel Bay. They’re only 3-4 years old and weigh about 34kg/75lbs. We’re the only aquarium in North America to exhibit these sensitive animals, thanks to our proximity to their habitat. Sunfish are temporary guests at the Aquarium. Our dedicated sunfish aquarists train them to swim over to us to be hand-fed a specialized “mola sausage” that mimics their wild meals of jellies, shrimp and other invertebrates. Once they grow to be around 230kg/500 pounds, or if their behavior changes letting us know they’re ready to go, we release them back to the wild with tags allowing us to find out how large they’ve grown should someone come across them again. Mighty molas are often seen in Monterey Bay from whale watching boats, especially when jellies are close to the coast, and beachgoers commonly find carcasses of young ones washed up on the beach, usually after a sea lion had some mola munchies. Ocean sunfish are found in temperate seas around the world and two separate species can be found in Monterey Bay: The common sunfish Mola mola and the recently discovered Hoodwinker sunfish, Mola tecta. Famous for being the heaviest bony fishes in the ocean, multiple Mola species reach 2,300kg/5,000lbs, and the title goes back and forth between the bumphead sunfish M. alexandrini and M. mola as new leviathans are discovered.) Sinking #ships for wreck #divingsites is the practice of scuttling old ships to produce artificial reefs (2) Sinking #oilrigs. #RigstoReefs is the practice of converting decommissioned #offshoreoil and #petroleum #rigs into artificial reefs (3) Concrete structures (pictured). These structures are similar in composition to natural #coral #limestone, and it is strong, heavy, cheap, and readily available (4) Polyvinyl chloride or #galvanizedsteel (5) Mineral #accretion #technology or #Biorock. A method that applies safe, low voltage #electricalcurrents through #seawater, causing #dissolvedminerals to #crystallize on structures, growing into a white limestone like that which naturally makes up #coralreefs These are a few of the materials that are used to make an artificial reef. A few weeks back I found a dead humpback whale offshore being eaten by a 15/16 ft great white (previous post). As more blood and oil filled the water my boat was surely masked in the same smell. My boat was now a floating smelly object... just like the whale. The shark apparently thought so as well and tried to bite off the boat prop. Raging winds sent me back to the harbor and the whale onto a nearby beach (that also happens to be a white shark nursery) off of Santa Cruz. At the same time, flocks of tourists were flooding the beaches at night to see the bioluminescent waves. I was hoping to get some images of the whale with the blue waves when I showed up to hundreds of tourists taking photos of the whale. What started off innocent turned ugly when drunks said They would buy the next round anyone getting pictures of the man climbing on the whale for instagram. The derelict climbed aboard with dog in tow. The next wave sent him into the gnarly smelling water. I too got closer to get some photos and found my pants covered in the horrid smell. Humans are crazy and I often have trouble understanding what drives people to act this way. So on my drive home at 230 am I took off my pants to save the seats. I pulled over around moss landing to answer a quick email to a scientist when the police showed up behind me. No pants, little explanation and a whole lot of confusion. I imagine those police were questioning my decisions on the same way. Strange night. - @ralphpace on Instagram

Para quem deseja mergulhar e possui certificação avançada existem locais para mergulhos de até 44 a 45 metros, e para os iniciantes pontos de 5 a 12 metros profundidade, em um total de 22 pontos. Uno de los resultados más asombrosos es que en el transcurso de 10 años la biomasa de peces en el parque se cuadriplicó; ello significa que los peces pueden crecer y madurar dentro del área protegida, y también salir de ésta a través de un efecto conocido como derrame (spillover). Una vez fuera, los peces pueden ser capturados y coadyuvar a sostener las pesquerías por muchas generaciones. Water in the Ross Sea is so cold it freezes to underwater rocks in fields of delicate stalagmites –anchor ice. Anchor ice is buoyant and easily cracks off and floats up, sometimes carrying a helpless urchin or anenome along with it to be entombed in the underside of the thick sea ice above. But even this unforgiving place was filled with life. Beneath the seal colony, the ocean floor was a mosaic. Two-meter-long nemertean worms snaked through a carpet of sea stars, forming writhing piles on food scraps dropped by seals. Urchins tiptoed on their many spines. Anemones waved their many arms. Some species adapt to the cold by becoming giants, and sea spiders the size of dinner plates walked with their bizarre strides on lobster-red legs. Perched high on a small glass sponge, Antarcturus combed the water with its hairy legs, hunting for passing zooplankton. The sponges can live for 1000 years and reach the size of a 50-gallon drum. These creatures must also contend with starvation. During the 4 months of Antarctic night, phytoplankton does not grow. These tiny plants support the whole ecosystem, and the community must wait out the winter for fresh food. Now in summer, every creature was eating, though so slowly it was hard to see. But at one point, I dove with BBC filmmakers who were tracking seafloor behavior with time-lapse cameras. Their high-speed film revealed sea stars storming up a slope, joining urchins and worms in an advancing army of singular purpose. The target of attack was a seal pup carcass in shallow water. It was horrific pandemonium. The worms had burrowed deep into the eye sockets. Sea stars clung everywhere, digesting their way through fur and skin. Amphipods swarmed like flies around the nostrils. The feast was served, and it would take all season to eat. I surveyed the scene as I ended my dive. Up close the gore was like something from a bad horror movie, but from a distance it was easy to appreciate the beauty of a system in which nothing is wasted and life is immediately recycled. Battle tested by cold, dark, ice, and starvation, life on the seafloor still thrived, hunting in slow motion in the icy depths of McMurdo Sound. #ccamlr - @johnbweller on Instagram

One of my favourite images I’ve taken of a great white shark...This juvenile white shark was one of 3 whites and perhaps a dozen tigers feeding on a humpback whale carcass back in 2014. The upper jaw and baleen plates of the whale dwarf the approx 2.8m white shark. Sharks play a vital role in cleaning up the oceans, not only as predators in their own right but by scavenging on whale carcasses which provide an easy, safe high calorie food source. The surest way to see sharks, and lots of them is find a whale carcass with the scent often stretching for miles. Whale Sharks 🤯 The largest fish in the sea, growing up to 12 meters! These gentle giants are filter feeders, meaning they don’t attack their prey like other sharks. Dumbo Octopus . Grimpoteuthis is a genus of pelagic umbrella octopuses known as the dumbo octopuses. The name dumbo originates from their resemblance to the title character of Disneys 1941 film Dumbo, having a prominent ear-like fin which extends from the mantle above each eye. There are 13 species recognized in the genus. Prey include crustaceans, bivalves, worms and copepods. The average life span of various Grimpoteuthis species is 3 to 5 years. . Whale whale whale, would you look what day it is! 🐋 Humpbacks are marvelous marine mammals, and they’re really world travelers. Every year, humpback populations migrate from cooler feeding grounds to warmer breeding grounds. The warm, tropical climate is perfect for mating and giving birth. Each humpback whale population has its own migration route, and those who travel from Antarctica to northern South America have the longest migration of any mammal alive! The ocean is vital to all life on earth, but it remains largely unexplored. @noaaoceanexploration, the only federal organization dedicated to exploring the deep ocean, aims to change that by working with partners to advance ocean exploration in the US Exclusive Economic Zone, which extends ~200 nautical miles off the US coast. You might know OER from the Okeanos livestreams of deep-sea expeditions. This year, OER’s expeditions on NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer were postponed, but OER is supporting several partner efforts, including a late September expedition on @nautiluslive to explore deep-sea methane seeps, ocean habitats that are hot spots of biodiversity. Some #fish have an intimidating presence and big moray eels are one of them. Their scary look tells you to stay away, and rightfully so, they have a powerful set of teeth that could rip your finger in a second! But attacks from #moray #eels are not common, and if it happens, it is most probably because they have been disturbed (I remember the famous case of a videographer who lost a thumb by one well-known gigantic moray eel in Thailand they used to feed with sausages). Moray eels are nocturnal hunters, so they spend most of the day resting in crevices and holes in the reef. So, when we see a #morayeel sticking its head out out of a hole, opening and closing their mouth in and intimidatory way, what we see is a moray eel resting. That doesn’t mean, of course, that we should lower our guard and start petting them, they still have terrifying teeth and we should never touch any living creature while diving, but it should give us a bit of a more relax feeling to enjoy these beautiful creatures. The moray in the photo is a Honeycomb moray eel and I took this picture at Batu Kapal, one of the best dive sites in the Banda Islands in #indonesia, and one where we can find a lot of these beautiful moray eels. - @biology_for_divers on Instagram
