Dumbo Octopus . Grimpoteuthis is a genus of pelagic umbrella octopuses known as the dumbo octopuses. The name dumbo originates from their resemblance to the title character of Disneys 1941 film Dumbo, having a prominent ear-like fin which extends from the mantle above each eye. There are 13 species recognized in the genus. Prey include crustaceans, bivalves, worms and copepods. The average life span of various Grimpoteuthis species is 3 to 5 years. . The California Morays were out to play last weekend in Catalina! These are spectacular creatures and most often an apex predator in their habitats. . Creepy and alien-esk fact of the day: the moray eel features a second set of pharyngeal jaws behind their normal jaw. The normal jaw will bite and hold the prey in place, and the pharyngeal jaw will then bite and transport the prey down into the throat! Unique to the California Moray, they have a set of depressible teeth in the roof of their mouths that fold upward as prey is swallowed via the pharyngeal jaw. . Ormering is now strictly regulated in order to preserve stocks. The gathering of ormers is now restricted to a number of ormering tides, from January 1 to April 30, which occur on the full or new moon and two days following that. No ormers may be taken from the beach that are under 80 mm in shell length. Gatherers are not allowed to wear wetsuits or even put their heads underwater. A pair of young porcelain crabs (Petrolisthes boscii), sitting with their backs against a live snail waiting it out at low tide. These porcelains crabs are common and abundant in Mumbais intertidal. Many animals in the intertidal can drop their limbs off to escape predators, and later regrow them, but porcelain crabs appear to do it very readily and with ease - giving them their name. (Regrowing lost parts costs animals a lot of energy and puts them at a disadvantage until the parts are back, so please dont make them do this just for a demo.)
