NEW SHOW! Envisioned with a slight twist to the virtual exhibition format, FRESH: Preview offers a glimpse of works from what was to be the inaugural exhibition at our new gallery space in New York City. The opening was originally scheduled for early May, what turned out to be a time of quarantine in New York City due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The excitement around finally realizing our mission of providing a permanent physical exhibition space for Cuban artists went on hold as the entire city shutdown, halting the gallery’s renovation and leaving us in limbo. Apartment-bound, trying to navigate our new physical reality as well as the possibilities offered by the online world, we wanted to do something heartening that incorporated interaction with our shut down city. A purely virtual approach didn’t feel quite right; the exhibition needed warmth and a sense of physical connection to counter the feelings of isolation and sadness brought on by the pandemic. Thus, we staged FRESH: Preview amidst stacks of drywall, idle power tools and construction debris in our half-renovated gallery space. We see it as an exercise in adaptability and fortitude, bringing elements of the raw physical space to the virtual experience. Will the original show happen? Should it happen? Will it be relevant? This all remains to be seen, but what is clear is that the impact of the novel coronavirus and the long-needed end to silence about anti-black racism in our society has created space for positive change. Our hope is that we all come together and use our shared creativity to envision, build and sustain a future where people are not oppressed because of race, identity, gender or for any reason at all. Let’s take a closer look at ‘Dancing Barefoot’ by Marina Adams from 2020. The large painting at the very beginning of our current exhibition ‘The Backward Glance can be a Glimpse into the Future’, is greeting all our visitors with it’s bright almost glowing colors, or as Barry Schwabsky explained in Artforum Magazin in 2019: ‘Color is just about everything in Adam’s work, and everything seems animated, in movement. The energy unpelling this motion i never agitated or frantic but rather feels steady, relaxed, and spontaneously responsive. (...) The sense of mobility that encompasses every element in the paintings makes it seem misleading to speak of ‘composition’, as the term implies a definitive placement of each thing in relation to the others. Best known for being a novelist, poet, filmmaker, and later a draughtsman, Jean Cocteau was all over the place from 1910-1950. In fact his portrait was taken by countless of his contemporaries. Rivet In 1986 Marc Newson riveted an aluminium-plated lounge chair. Loosely based on the chaise longue in Jacques-Louis Davids 1800 portrait of Madame Recamier, Newson says, I had this image of a fluid, aluminium form in mind. The only way to get the aluminium on was to beat little pieces of metal into shape with a wooden mallet and attach them with rivets. Thats where the airplane metaphor came from. (1995). Por el interés que siempre tuve para entender el funcionamiento mecánico de las cosas, hice estudios formales de Ingeniería. En el tercer año de carrera me di cuenta que no sólo me interesaban los números y los cálculos, también sentía la necesidad de vincularme con mi lado creativo-humanista. Es decir, por un lado me encantaban las matemáticas pero, por otro, necesitaba equilibrar esa balanza. El Diseño Industrial se me presentó como la opción más apropiada para canalizar esas inquietudes. Mi primer año de estudios lo disfruté muchísimo porque era un año de conocimiento general que incluía materias de arte que resultaron siendo mis favoritas. Ese año fue revelador porque conocí la obra de Alejandro Otero. La obra de Otero fue un ejemplo magistral. Fue su obra la que me impresionó de tal manera que marcó mi camino. De inmediato comencé a experimentar y aplicar mis habilidades manuales a un nuevo lenguaje. Siendo aún estudiante de Diseño Industrial (en 1996) realicé mi primera exposición individual en la Galería Uno (Caracas). Tenía 24 años. ***** (1995). In the third year of my degree, I realized that I was interested in numbers and calculations; I also felt the need to connect with my creative-humanist side. I mean, on the one hand, I love math, but on the other, I needed to balance that. Industrial Design was presented to me as the most appropriate option for those concerns. I enjoyed my first year of studies because it was a year of general knowledge that included art subjects that turned out to be my favorites. That year was revealing because I got to know the work of Alejandro Otero. Oteros work was a masterful example of my concerns. It was his work that impressed me in such a way that it marked my path. I immediately started experimenting and applying my manual skills to a new language. É importante notar que um pintor se comunica com o público por meio de uma lona. Diferentemente de um filme ou livro, a informação e a mensagem estão limitadas à uma única imagem. Em uma pintura, considera-se o que é retratado – o assunto – e quanto bem o artista utilizou elementos de composição, como formas, cores, espaço, luzes, tom, etc. O observador pode decodificar os símbolos e inferir suas mensagens. Por exemplo, cores pálidas e linhas muito finas podem transmitir um senso de delicadeza. As pessoas reagem instantaneamente a pinturas. Contudo, essa reação imediata se desenvolve em uma reação pessoal mais completa à medida que se examina e se explora a obra. Reagir significa fazer conexões. Seen here in @mayur_mono’s home, alongside artwork by @tanyagoel01, are works from Sameers first solo exhibition at TARQ titled A Man of the Crowd. For this body of work, created over the span of a year, Kulavoor took a step away from his regular practice as a graphic artist and illustrator, choosing instead to embrace paint on canvas. Sharing a glimpse of the artworks, Mayur tells us, Sameer is a friend and I have been a fan of his work since we were contemporaries designing for music television. His work for me chronicles daily life and I like the way he extracts his subjects out of their environs. His work is relatable and by magnifying the everyday he makes you pay attention to what we take for granted. I also like his sense of irony, hes chronicling and commenting and that sense of play is fun. What drew us to these particular works was the size. They are very small with a unique mount that makes them pop out of the wall. As young collectors, my wife and I are always looking at the smaller pieces to squeeze into our Bombay flat. He was an important figure of the Russian avant-garde, helping develop suprematism with his mentor, Kazimir Malevich, and designing numerous exhibition displays and propaganda works for the Soviet Union. His work greatly influenced the Bauhaus and constructivist movements, and he experimented with production techniques and stylistic devices that would go on to dominate 20th-century graphic design. Картины по номеркам ⠀ Какое же это удовольствие рисовать по номерочкам, выводить каждую линию тоненькой кисточкой, краски ложатся на полотне так гармонично, что даже не веришь своим глазам, что ты это создаешь. Ежедневное восхищение красотой того, что уже разрисовал, прям чувство душевного удовлетворения– подумаете вы, а я скажу, что это не совсем так. ⠀ Я не любитель рисовать дома и все что связано с постройками, но разрисовать эту картину очень захотелось. Этот загадочный магазинчик напоминает архитектуру Марокко и Раджастхана (штат на севере Индии). ⠀ Плюсы: - Что бы успокоить нервишки – да. Главное не биться в истерике, когда зарисовал не тот номерок или краска от вашей руки отпечаталась на полотне. - Не знаете чем заняться в свободное время – раскраска самое то. (10% закрашивания полотна занимает где-то 1,5-2 часа (если это 5 звездочек как у меня)) - Игра с красками весьма занимает, ведь прикольно же помазюкать по линиям и из этого получается шедеврик. ⠀ Минусы: - Долго. У меня на раскрашивание ушел месяц с хвостиком. Сначала было интересно, а потом возникает желание забросить. - Нет развития креатива, чувствуешь себя «в рамках» и из-за этого повышается раздражительность. (а вообще это картина типа ж антистрессссссссс) - Акриловые краски быстро сохнут + нужно пару слоев краски наносить на номерки т.к. просвечиваются. ⠀ Не могу сказать, что я жалею о потраченном времени. Там было много оттенков синего (моего любимого), но этому я даже кайфовала, когда приходил час использовать их. Я рада, что получила этот опыт и у меня прекрасный результат, хоть на стенку вешай) ⠀ Что бы не переплачивать (как это сделала я) минимальная цена этих картин БЕЗ упаковки – 130 грн. (увидела на Петровке), а максимальная – 180 грн. ⠀ Ну что, друзья-художники, кто-то баловался раскрасками? Поделитесь своим опытом;) - @iren.fmn on Instagram

With her head tilted back and her right hand placed on her hip, the stance of this young girl exudes confidence. Her long hair is knotted to one side and other than her bangles and a short necklace, she is nude. She was discovered in the 1920s, when depictions of women from ancient cultures were often interpreted as either mother goddess for worship or, as in this case, being merely ornamental. Red soil meets black clay — I have this picture made by my friend @fredlahache since before moving in here. I’ve found textured black framing sticks last year? And just recently built a frame for it. Things take the time they take… The very next day, I went to hang it at the studio. Took two wooden blocks and set ALTAR on top. This is the first « scene » that I’ve put together in the soon to be « show » area in the studio.
