Each composition is then superimposed, askew, over the photograph of a handmade 3D relief sculpture of the image. This bag by @katharina_grosse was created in celebration of her exhibition It wasn´t us at Hamburger Bahnhof - Museum für Gegenwart - Berlin 14.06.2020 - 10.01.2021. I painted my way out of the building, said @katharina_grosse in relation to her work at Hamburger Bahnhof. Her latest in-situ painting disregards the boundaries of the museum space in a grand and colourful gesture. Grosse’s kaleidoscopic painting brings together colours and forms, natural and man-made surroundings, and its visitors as participants in an all-encompassing, pulsating interaction of hues. The boundaries between objects, and between horizontal and vertical orientations begin to melt away, and the work’s scale continuously shifts depending on the visitor’s position. Illumination machine #1. From my interview with @ideatchina : [...] developed out of my interest in the Art Povera movement and Alberto Burri. His bandaged and burned textures. His mixture of aesthetic elegance and inelegant violence. And from noticing that, at a certain budget, interiors often trend towards polished opulence. I began to bandage the outside of my lamps to give them the opposite quality of the smoothed surfaces that are a signifier for luxury value. At the same time, I covered the inside of my lamps with copper gilding. So there was a turbulent skin and an opulent interior. Luxury signifiers were present but subordinated. In Illumination Machine #1 the interior is copper which has been impregnated into concrete and then oxidized to a verdigris. So again there is a luxury value which has been eroded by an aesthetic intention. - @brechtwrightganderstudio on Instagram

Fresh shoot of “The Opera of Prehistoric Creatures” by my dear friend @juliaandreone who just created @europium.studio with @studio.ghazaalvojdani . The show happened @museedartmodernedeparis and was a presentation of @lafayetteanticipations collection. The fresco is by Raoul Dufy and it’s about the invention of electricity and its role in our lives. He painted it in 1937. I was happy to show this piece in this Dufy temple because of the connection between the invention of new technologies and the supernatural, and this idea that a shot of electricity can give life to the inanimate. O caráter límpido, natural e fluido da água contrapõem-se com as marcas de cultura da vista da cidade onde tudo é artificial e construído. O vidro translucido da janela ecoa no imaginário como o vidro do escafandro que permite visualizar o mundo exterior. Assim, pôr analogia, o espaço privado como o involucro do escafandro, onde estamos protegidos, e a janela como a circunferência de vidro que permite enxergar a área inacessível da realidade. Não por acaso, a metáfora visual do vídeo surge no momento de pandemia, como um registro imagético da percepção da cidade e do espaço público. The first US museum retrospective for American artist Allan McCollum, Allan McCollum: Works since 1969 can be viewed again since @icamiami reopened last week! Since the late 1960s, McCollum has created works that examine the art object’s relationship to uniqueness, context, and value, as well as to the museum that collects, values, and preserves it. This exhibition surveys McCollum’s output over more than five decades, and makes inquiries into the artist’s series of “regional projects” created since the 1990s. In his work McCollum has used the idea of the collection to explore how we remember, care for, and privilege various material artifacts. The exhibition is traveling to the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri, September 26, 2020–January 4, 2021. (1996) A los 26 años hice mi primera exposición individual, titulada Psique + Acero, en la Galería Uno, Caracas. Hacer esa exposición fue un reto desde todo punto de vista. Hice una pausa en mis estudios, necesitaba invertir todo mi tiempo en la construcción de las piezas que irían a la muestra. Además, esa exposición exigió una gran planificación financiera pues no “debía” vender ninguna pieza mientras la preparaba. Gracias al préstamo de dos amigos coleccionistas y a un tío pude lograr el objetivo. La muestra se inauguró el día el 14 de abril, dos días antes de mi cumpleaños #27. En las fotografías aparecen la maqueta del proyecto, las piezas exhibidas y la prensa que reseñó la muestra. Making that exhibition was a challenge from every point of view. I paused in my studies, I needed to invest all my time in the construction of the pieces that would go to the exhibition. Also, that exhibition required excellent financial planning as it was not due to sell any piece while preparing it. Thanks to the loan of two collector friends and an uncle, I achieved the goal. The show opened on April 14, two days before my 27th birthday. The photographs show the projects model, the exhibited pieces, and the press that reviewed the show. Always grateful to gallery owner Blanca Roux who opened his doors to a young artist ... «БУМАЖНЫЙ ИНЖЕНЕР» ⠀ – так называет себя современный художник и дизайнер Мэтью Шлиан из Мичигана. Его работы – это, скорее, гибрид искусства и науки, где складывание бумаги встречается с нанотехнологиями. ⠀ Шлиан начал свой путь с изучения керамики, но обнаружил, что его интересуют самые разные художественные направления, включая стекло, живопись, перформанс и звук. ⠀ Основное направление его творчества, в большей степени, определила любовь к геометрии. Используя инженерные навыки, он создает невероятно сложные кинетические скульптуры из самой обычной бумаги. ⠀ А работа в бумажной инженерии привела его к архитектуре и дизайну, что, в свою очередь, привело к сотрудничеству с людьми далеко за пределами мира искусства. ⠀ Сейчас он сотрудничает с Мичиганский университетом, где, например, группа инженеров-химиков используют созданную им структуру разрезания бумаги для создания солнечных батарей. ⠀ Его творчество простирается от чертежей и рисунков до крупномасштабных инсталляции. В чистых и четких линиях его работ есть какая-то безмятежность. Penalva explora o imaginário do que é ser brasileiro e o sentimento de pertença por meio de materiais e iconografias populares, uma aproximação ao debate sobre a colonização e os reflexos no Brasil atual; a partir do enaltecimento de processos do saber popular e revisitação de gestos atribuídos à artesania, conhecimentos orais, que outrora foram marginalizados pela ideia de sofisticação eurocêntrica. Mano Penalva começa seus trabalhos visitando um mercado, é uma caminhada por um ambiente quimérico que oferta objetos palpáveis, gestos e lembranças; esses são os insumos necessários. Essa andança obstinada deriva de - e provoca - um exercício do olhar e reconhecimento do familiar; do que já foi visto ou vivido pelo artista e que provêm de um universo de memória afetiva. A seleção de trabalhos traz um panorama da produção do artista a partir de diversas séries, revelando uma identidade nacional popular ampliada. Taking place in both galleries on Old Burlington Street in Mayfair, its home since 1995, this unique event showcases the diversity of the gallery programme by celebrating its history whilst also looking ahead to the future. ________ New and historic works by each of the gallery’s 29 artists are featured in the show. Many of the artists in the exhibition – notably #MammaAndersson, #YinkaShonibareCBE (@shonibarestudio) and @DavidShrigley – have been with the gallery from its infancy, marking a long and fruitful collaboration over the past three decades. Allora & Calzadilla created Specters of Noon, a major exhibition of seven sculptural works, specifically for the Menil’s main building which uses sounds, cast shadows, and novel sculptural materials to evoke an awe-inducing atmosphere of bewilderment and beauty. The pieces on view are inspired by the artists’ four-year immersion in the Menil’s holdings of Surrealism. They explored the historic role that Surrealism played in the Caribbean in the years surrounding World War II, including its pivotal role in anti-colonialism, and the movement’s fascination with the importance of noon. Bertoia-Era Curtis Jere Spray Kinetic Steel Wire Sculptures Important pair of matching MCM decorative art pieces by the great metalwork artist Curtis Jere. Curtis Jere was very popular in the 70’s and he continued to create through the 90’s. This piece is abstract in style and features a faux marble resin base pedestal atop which a spray of steel kinetic wires sit. It does have paper labels which verify it as authentic Curtis Jere and not in his manner or a repro. This pair is rather rare as our research has not unearthed any other example. Very much reminicent an likely inspired by the work of Harry Bertoia. Wires are flexible enough that air will move them in a kinetic fashion with even a slight breeze. Overall, this set is beautiful throughout with no real damage aside from a few small chips to the base from handling, but nothing unexpected. Please see the pictures for a closer look. Le MAC est privilégié d’ajouter à sa Collection l’œuvre intitulée chant pour l’eau [Kinosipi]***. L’installation est une composition créée à partir du spectre sonore d’une chanson de Karine Wasiana Echaquan, conteuse et chanteuse atikamekw. Ce projet de nature collaborative est la troisième installation d’une série de « chants pour l’eau » interprétés à partir de différentes rivières sur le territoire. Les rivières étaient les connecteurs entre les lieux et les communautés avant le développement des autoroutes. Cette œuvre porte l’image d’un testament oral sur la relation entre les eaux, les populations et le territoire. @waddingtoncustot celebrates the work of contemporary sculptor @pabloreinosoofficial with a pair of ‘Special Focus’ exhibitions, launching online at intervals throughout September and complemented by a physical exhibition in their Cork Street space. These presentations, accessible both online and in person, seek to explore the Franco-Argentine artist’s ongoing interest in the contemporary interaction between humanity and the environment. Having learnt carpentry at an early age from his grandfather before going on to study marble sculpting in Carrara, Tuscany, in 1978, Reinoso’s practice has always been intrinsically tied to the materials of his craft. His use of natural products, including wood, stone, marble and slate are often subverted by industrial components such as steel and brass, to chart both the destruction and required protection of the planet. Reinoso’s sculptural benches, for which he is widely known, have been publicly installed at locations alongside the River Thames in London, beside the Quai Gillet in Lyon and on the south terrace of the Elysée Palace in Paris. The wooden structures of Reinoso’s Spaghetti Benches, seen with ‘Curly Bench’ and ‘Deroule’, mirror the organic forms and patterns of the material’s beginnings. Fluid, tangled limbs grow from the benches themselves, spilling out and encroaching on the surrounding area. Reinoso invites the public to sit and occupy these locations, whilst also providing space for remnants of nature. We commissioned this work as a part of our exhibition Alia Ali: Project Series 53. The exhibition was curated by Senior Curator Rebecca McGrew with Independent Curator Hannah Grossman. @studio.alia.ali @hanzo_e.g #AliaAli is a Yemeni-Bosnian-US multi-media artist. Having traveled to sixty-seven countries, lived in and between seven, and grown up among five languages, her most comfortable mode of communication is through image and multi-sensory mediums. Her extensive travels have led her to process the world through interactive experiences and the belief that the interpretation of verbal and written language has dis-served particular communities and presents more of a threat than a means of understanding.⠀ ⠀ Alias aesthetic interests stem from people, place, and the processes which unite and divide us, all at once. Her work reflects on the politics and poetics of contested notions surrounding the topics of identity, physical borders, universality, mental/physical spaces of confinement, and the inherent dualism that exists in everything. MICAS is a Government of Malta infrastructural legacy project for the Culture and the Arts sector.
