Have you ever thought about what you would do if war broke out in your home country? Yesterday I spent the afternoon with photo-journalist Hazir Reka / @hazirreka listening to stories and looking through his archive. As a student Hazir would be on the front-line of protests in Kosovo documenting the fight against authoritarianism, by the time war had broken out he found himself at the centre of the bloodiest conflict Europe had seen since WWII. After the fall of Yugoslavia, Kosovo faced aggressive expansion from Serbian Forces. Villages were burned to the ground, civilians were tortured, raped and brutally murdered. Hundreds of thousands fled the country as Kosovo lay as a centre ground in a battle between East vs West. Following a NATO led intervention, and the deaths of thousands more, the conflict came to an end in 1999 and in 2008 they gained their independence. The country today still faces a battle to stabilise their democracy and eradicate Sectarian division but they are on the path to forge their own future. I don’t think anyone really knows what they’d do during a war, until they are in one. For many the fight will be fought with guns, but for Hazir, he fought with his camera. He, and others like him, expose the reality of war, they force us to watch and without them the Kosovo I’m standing in today, would be a different place altogether. Sewing Salmon. I have been so fortunate in that I’ve been able to photograph several Material Traditions residencies for the Smithsonian Arctic Studies Center at the Anchorage Museum. This image is of one of the more unique materials, salmon skin. Three contemporary Alaska Native artists, Audrey Armstrong, Coral Chernoff, and Marlene Nielsen, spent a week studying museum artifacts and sharing their techniques with each other and the public. I am over the damn moon to announce the release of my debut LP, Hair Birth; a record which you can listen to through its own cover art. The limited special edition features art that transforms the jacket into a functioning speaker. The art is the speaker and the speaker is the art. The width of a continuous copper coil is modulated as it radiates across the surface of the jacket to render the image of my face mid-performance from a show last summer in Kumamoto, Japan. The coil, when connected to an audio amplifier and placed in front of a magnet, turns the material of the cover into an active speaker membrane. The whole thing dances and vibrates in your hands as you listen to the album, as it pushes the particles in the air back and forth to create invisible waves that we perceive to be sound. Un gruppo di 11 ballerini danzerà sulle coreografie di @jaimeuciuoli, dando vita ai miei abiti scultura e alla loro connessione col ritmo di madre terra, mentre io dipingerò il mio nuovo logo-emblema della Rosa su un muro di bento box contenenti il cibo di questi luoghi preziosi, tra cui i pomodori nella loro biodiversità (Rizzu Catanese, Munrialisi e Principe Borghese), e il pane ai grani neri antichi Tumminia. A group of 11 dancers will perform on @jaimeuciuolis choreography, giving life to my sculptural pieces and their connection with mother earth’s rhythm while I will paint my new logo-emblem of the Rose on a bento box wall containing the food of this precious soil, including tomatoes in their biodiversity (Rizzu Catanese, Munrialisi and Principe Borgehse), and the ancient black grain bread Tumminia. The Bentornato-boxes will be donated by the dancers to the guests, who will be able to taste, metabolize and spread the performance’s values, by becoming messengers and part of a great work of art imbued with love. An important thanks goes to @cittadellarte for mentoring my artwork and to the @mama.seeds gallery which will host the event in the @zahir_country_house - @cittadellarte_fashion_b.e.s.t on Instagram
