Did you know that the fashion industry is the second largest polluter in the world? Yup. It’s that bad. The fashion industry accounts for 10% of global carbon emissions by generating greenhouse gases when manufacturing, producing and transporting clothing. Synthetic fibers (ex: polyester and acrylic are a few) are used in up 72% of our clothing and can take up to 200 years to decompose. The fact that it takes these unnatural materials so long to decompose is another reason I love vintage poly—I know if it ends up in a landfill (15% of our clothing is recycled or donated leaving 85% to go to the landfills) it will take a very long time to decompose. But what about water, Courtney? It takes 200 tons of fresh water to dye one ton of clothing. 85% of the daily needs of water in the entire population of India would be covered by the water used to grow cotton in the country. Think you are being sustainable because you buy all natural materials? Think again. It takes 20,000 liters of water to produce 1 kg of cotton. Are you starting to see the problem? Fast fashion and extreme consumerism has allowed for a “wear it a couple times for a photo and throw it away” attitude that HAS GOT TO STOP. Influencers have a major role in what becomes “trendy” and I believe they have a social responsibility to support sustainability. Wearing second hand clothing is a somewhat easy thing many of us can do to decrease our carbon footprint. I understand that buying secondhand/Thrifting/vintage has privileges built in which is why it is even more important for those of us who can shop secondhand to do so. You don’t have to be perfect, but being a more conscious consumer is an excellent start. That doesn’t mean you have to buy vintage or shop with me, any second hand clothing works! What does this all have to do with voting? Well there are still politicians out there (ehem) that do not believe that global warming is real. It is real and it is going to change life as we know it if we all don’t step up to the plate. What change in your consumer habits related to fashion can you adjust to be more sustainable? Part 2- Many have wondered, what did Audrey see in this thrice divorced, older man? To Audrey, Mel was cultured, intelligent, spoke multiple languages, and an established actor. He could help guide and protect her from the chaos of Hollywood. When they werent working they lived a simple life, as described in this excerpt from a 1955 article about the couple at their farmhouse near Rome: “Audrey and Mel live informally and dress informally. If you go to their home for dinner you’ll find Audrey wearing a silk blouse and pair of tight, well-tailored toreador pants, and Mel in cotton trousers and a native Italian shirt. Instead of American cocktails, you’ll be served a drink called a Negroni, an Italian aperitif. Dinner starts with a pasta, then a tasty veal dish—zuccini and stringbeans grown on the estate, a green salad with mild oil and vinegar dressing, a country cheese, some fruit, and strong Italian coffee. The wine is also made on estate.” . However, Mel had a temper and became jealous of Audrey’s career. He envied her success and resented the fact that as Audrey’s career continued to grow, his became more of an after thought. He had aspirations that the two would become the next Laurence Olivier & Vivien Leigh, but his dreams were quickly dashed. War & Peace earned mixed reviews and his attempt at directing Audrey in Green Mansions was panned by critics and ended his directorial career. Friends noticed that Audrey felt trapped in her marriage and unable to be herself. From the book “Fifth Avenue, 5 A.M.”, Sam Wasson describes an unpleasant moment between the two, “One evening after the day’s shoot, at a Japanese restaurant, with various members of the [Breakfast at Tiffany’s] cast and crew, Audrey made the mistake of putting her elbows on the table. Mel was seated next to her, and when he saw this, he picked up a fork, slipped its prongs under her elbows, and said - in a voice loud enough for all to hear - ‘Ladies do not put their elbows on the table.’ It was the sort of oppressively awkward moment that can only be met with silence. 📷ROCK VIU ➡️ WILLY DEVILLE 📍Sot del Migdia, Barcelona. 📆 (24/09/1988) Estava per la Plaça Reial el dia abans que Willy DeVille actués al Sot del Migdia per les Festes de la Mercè, i me’l vaig trobar en la terrassa del bar Glaciar. No m’ho vaig pensar dues vegades: vaig agafar un cartell que hi havia enganxat a la porta i li vaig acostar amb la intenció d’aconseguir el seu autògraf. Em va dir que sí i va estampar-hi la seva signatura. A canvi però, em va demanar la cervesa que portava a la mà, suposo que ja calenta i esbravada. Em va semblar un tracte més que correcte! Anys després, ja en ple èxit del “Demasiado corazón”, va fer una roda de premsa a un hotel de Barcelona. Va aparèixer amb desgana, amb un gosset als braços i una vistosa acompanyant femenina, i es va passar tota lestona fent un dibuix amb un boli Bic a un full de paper mentre responia tota mena de tòpics. En acabar, em vaig acostar a ell amb una foto i diversos discos (entre ells algun bootleg). Això em va valer el premi de ser el fan més fan de la sala, o almenys algú que s’havia escoltat algun disc seu. We’re very close to starting the sale of legendary drummer Bernard Purdie’s record collection, and it’s been really wonderful speaking with him about music, multiple times a week, for months now, leading up to this moment. It’s been especially wonderful talking to him about his relationship with the king Galt MacDermot, one of my favorite people I’ve ever had the pleasure of considering a friend and mentor. And Galt and Bernard were the closest of friends, for well over half a century. . Here are some of the Galt MacDermot records that will be on offer. I first met Bernard through Galt, in a rehearsal space in an old Mid-Manhattan warehouse, some 23 years ago. Over the years I would see him at Galt’s Staten Island manse, often, and he would always leave with a record or two. I recall being very proud to present him with the ‘Up From The Basement’ albums that I put together with Galt and Galt’s son Vincent. Crazy to think that those came out nearly 20 years ago now! . This is what Bernard had to say about his late friend: . ‘I worked with Galt MacDermot for over 50 years. We came together when he was trying to do demos for his records in the early or mid-1960s, because nobody seemed to give him what he wanted. It was really that simple. His music, it had African beats, and “African Waltz” was one of them. The point is, everything he was doing had an African flavor, that’s what I told him. I just didn’t believe he knew what he was doing. I said “this music is African,” and he said, “yeah.” I didn’t want to say it, so I beat around the bush, talking about it, and then finally I said, “do you really know what you’re doing; do you know what this music is that you created?” He said, “yeah.” Just like that. I said, “this is just wonderful.” It was something I always wanted to do, and here he was, this little guy, writing all of this music, and then - after so many years of us working together - he told me he had lived in Africa! His father was a diplomat. One thing led to the other and I got called for everything he did. It didn’t matter what it was. We were close firiends. Very. I mean super. My parents have joined the 100,000+ Californians ordered to evacuate their home, but yesterday they snuck back in to collect their greatest, flammable valuables. Mom showed me what she grabbed for me over FaceTime this morning. He appears about ten seconds in and was the object of much dispute (though these videos clarify some of the history) but once the dust settled, he was mine. Mom assures me the house will be fine, but were it all to go down (which it wont!) Ill be lucky to have raggedy old Gus, and fire resistant parents, and this well of life-giving video footage that spans back to my literal birth. I cant want for much. And for the love of...life, I hope amidst everything, (everything!), that you have people, that those people are doing well, and if its rough now, that it wont always be. In honor of what would have been John Lennons 80th birthday, BBC Radio 2 is set to air a new documentary dedicated to The Beatles legend. Dubbed simply John Lennon at 80, the special tribute is comprised of interviews @Sean_Ono_Lennon conducted with his fathers close friends, family, and colleagues, including @PaulMcCartney. One of the topics McCartney discussed is how he and John finally set aside their differences and reconciled before the Imagine songwriters tragic death. McCartney recalled the significance of making amends with John prior to his passing in 1980: I always say to people, one of the great things for me was that after all The Beatles rubbish and all the arguing and the business, you know, business differences really… that even after all of that, I’m so happy that I got it back together with your dad. It really, really would have been a heartache to me if we hadnt have reunited, added Macca. It was so lovely too that we did, and it really gives me sort of strength to know that. It is a gallery of portraits - including those of Maastricht students - that together should express the diversity that Maastricht University stands for. The photos are printed on the thirty-meter long awning that hangs in front of the glass facade at the entrance. De Puy came to Maastricht in January to take pictures of students in the Bonnefanten Museum and at UM Sport. Earlier, she already photographed a pregnant woman and a 90-year-old. “These portraits must together form a kind of lifeline,” De Puy said at the time. “I usually start with a form. Then I’m going to fill it in with faces. On Sunday, I had the wonderful opportunity to say goodbye to the Center for Yoga, also known by many as Yogaworks Larchmont. This studio meant a lot to me and to so many people. It was the very first yoga studio in Los Angeles, opened by Ganga White and Ana Forrest in 1967. Years later, Yogaworks bought it and the community continued to expand. . I took my very first yoga class there in 1998 with Susan Swan in the upstairs room (the room with the windows). . In 2009, I started kundalini teacher training at Golden Bridge and also started working at the front desk at CFY. (Massive gratitude and thanks to @the.mala.maker for bringing me on board. I honestly don’t know if any of this would have happened if it wasn’t for your support, Jacqueline. 💗) . In 2010, I started to teach regularly (and, drove all over Los Angeles regularly 😂) and covered classes at Yogaworks Main St. for @kiamilleryoga and at Yogaworks South Bay for @yogawithaimee. In 2012, I was invited to be on the regular schedule. I’m beyond grateful and I learned so much. . Fast forward to March, 2020. I taught my final in-person class before the lockdown in the very same room I took my very first yoga class in. Full circle. I still can’t believe after today, CFY won’t be around anymore. It’s one of those places that I always thought would be around forever. (Sigh). . Thank you to so many of you who I had the awesome pleasure of meeting, chatting and getting to know here and at many of the other Yogaworks locations. I am so grateful I’ve had the chance to meet you, to work with you, to learn with and learn from you, and to share vegan donuts with you over the years. . Having class online has allowed me to create more personal photography work, which is very different for me. Don’t get me wrong, I still call myself a lifestyle and fashion photographer, and that’s my goal, but creating something new has been interesting. Last week I was assigned a self portrait with some sense of truth. I started by wearing the clothes and sitting in the chair. However this is how the final image turned out. I shot this image in my mom’s bedroom and I picked these clothes out of my closet because they’re something I wouldn’t normally wear together... maybe acting as a personality that I might put on to look like someone else. I used a vintage mirror to capture my face and I layered two images on top of each other to also show my legs at the bottom. - @nataliegrace.jpg on Instagram
