I’m completely devastated by the loss of my lifelong friend and and musical comrade. I truly felt if anyone could beat this horrible Cancer, it would be Frankie. He was the toughest guy I’ve ever known. No fear in him whatsoever. I first played with Frankie in 1981. I’ll so miss our psychic connection on stage as a rhythm section. We shared a common love for Jazz Fusion as well as the mighty Led Zep and others which helped fuse this strong musical bond. I’ve been really down about music lately. It’s impossible not to be, right? That’s caused me to think a lot about what it would be like if a band like The Clash was still around. This was a band that taught me to think for myself and to question things at a young age. A group of guys, who weren’t especially strong musicians, but they were writing songs about rebelling, about using music as a weapon and inspiring people to use their voices for change. What would Joe Strummer say about an IT guy telling musicians they don’t put out enough music? What kind of songs would they release about a reality TV star running the U.S.? On this day in 1983, I played the first ARMS concert at the Royal Albert Hall. Stew (Ian Stewart from the Rolling Stones) had invited me to do this concert at a party at Jeff Becks country home. It was to be for Ronnie Lane and the Action Research into Multiple Sclerosis, a condition to which he unfortunately had become a victim. It had been outlined that the three former Yardbirds would be playing separate sets and maybe play together at the end of the evening. Steve Winwood was also to perform. I agreed enthusiastically to commit to the show, it was only the following day that it dawned on me that I was the only one not to have a solo career with the exception of the Death Wish II soundtrack which made putting a set together for this event an interesting and challenging experience. The opening number was Prelude, a re-arranged Chopin prelude in E Minor, performed specifically to employ the house in-built Victorian pipe organ into the set. It was played magnificently by American James Horner. City Sirens and Whos to Blame from the Death Wish II album had Steve Winwood graciously supplying vocals. The set culminated in an instrumental version of Stairway to Heaven - the first time I had performed this on my own.
