I recently came across an article in a very popular magazine that advised parents to say things like this when your child is having a tantrum:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -Stop yelling!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -What youre doing is not acceptable!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -Hey, look over there (distract)!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -Why are you crying?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Im sorry but when did saying, Stop yelling! and What youre doing is not acceptable! ever work? Those words, in my opinion, only add fuel to the fire and are often said when we feel out of control and dysregulated. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Im ok with distraction here and there but dont recommend this as your go-to strategy because it teaches children, indirectly, that feelings are scary and need to be avoided. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And often asking Why questions during emotional dysreguation is fruitless. Young children often dont know, or cant verbalize, why theyre feeling the way they do (heck, sometimes this happens to us, too!). Asking that and then not getting a satisfying answer can lead you to feeling more helpless in the moment. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Instead, this is what I recommend we say. Often, silence is more than enough and whats needed to pass through the moment. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And remember, its more about our PRESENCE and MINDSET during these moments, then things we say. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What are your thoughts about this? Everyone has anxiety at sometime or another. Theres everyday anxiety which is a natural response to stressors in your life. Theres *anxiety* which is this layer of wrongness that likes to blanket you and follow you around while you worry over everything and nothing. Then theres ANXIETY - which makes you feel like you cant properly breathe and the world is about to end at any moment. Here are some tips that might help with the first two. (As always - everyones mental health is different and Im only writing from my own experiences, what works for me might not work for you and thats okay!) These are just little tips I use when my anxiety isnt too terrible but its at a level thats beginning to bother me. Whats your go-to thing? They remind the mind that it doesn’t have to be solely responsible for solving or getting rid of your anxiety and fear. It’s in those moments when the mind is given the chance to pause it’s work that relief slips in, even if it’s momentary.⠀ .⠀ Those minutes of mind pause begin to create a different experience with your anxiety and fear, even if your external circumstances haven’t yet changed.
