Happy birthday Clara Porset! Born in this day in 1895. Here a view of her home at Chimalistac, Mexico. Cuban-born furniture and interior designer Clara Porset is best known for Modern designs inspired by the local traditions of Mexico, her adopted homeland. Educated in New York at Columbia Universitys School of Fine Arts, as well as in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, the Sorbonne, and the Louvre, Clara Porset traveled widely in Europe. Porset returned to Cuba in 1932, and began working professionally as an interior designer, designing for both private and public contexts. Always committed to education, she gave many lectures with the goal of educating the Cuban public about the principles of modern design. Porset quickly rose to prominence, however, her career was interrupted when her support for and participation in the Cuban resistance movement led to political exile. Clara Porset was fascinated and inspired by Mexicos craft traditions, and began looking to traditional forms in order to create designs that would meld modernity with local tradition. Indeed, she is perhaps best known for her variations on the butaque, a low, graceful chair with a long history in Mexico. The recipient of numerous awards and honors within Mexico, she also gained recognition abroad. “How to tell a story with and about colour? The graphic novel Franklin is a sharp answer to this question. The inside cover and first page are printed in the familiar red, white and blue shades of the Dutch national flag. A reference to whom’s history we are dealing with here. The story talks about a part of the Dutch liberation during the Second World War that is often ignored. Cultural diversity is the subject in question. A significant part is the perception of ‘race’; only the characters’ skin colours are painted inside the delicate pen-drawn illustrations. A clear and radical design decision with an unapologetic outcome. It appealed to us that all characters are speaking in their native tongue. Both content and design contain multiple elements that add different layers to the story. Our encounter with Franklin is informed by our individual point of reference. Both in concept and form it questioned our assumptions about the lives and contribution of oppressed racial minorities in key moments of Dutch history. Using DNA testing and with the assistance of a seasoned genealogist, I now have a name and a face that has eluded my family for half a century. It was always my mother’s wish to find her father. I tried and failed so many times, leading to dead ends. I admit I had always felt indifferent to knowing who my grandfather was. It’s war, I thought. People vanish. So what. But now, with his face peering back at me, as if surfacing from a legend, as if Achilles had a photographic gaze you could return with your own, I am unmoored by a strange yet overpowering sense of pride, joy, and peace. I’m sorry you died in 2005 and we never met—but I smile knowing I shared this earth with you for a little while—and so did your daughter. Now I know where I got my thick-ass eyebrows, my goofy smile, the freckles on my nose (we’re Irish!?) Born in 1947 to farmers in rural Arkansas, you left for war at 17, in that war brought an incredible girl into the world. There is so little about you in the records—looking for you reminds me how easily we are erased, how easily history exhales us back as air, won’t keep any of us long enough to be found. And yet, I found you, grandpa. I’m a writer now. I hope you’re proud of me. Irish, Vietnamese, Southern farmers, immigrants, I come from storytellers on all sides. Today, my darling father would have turned 69. Yesterday, Cosmas, Georgi, Markos and I spent time in his studio going through his work and archives when we came across this portrait by Robert Mapplethorpe. Legendary. To one side was a table on which he stored his paints, all very esthetic.. silver hues gleaming from the tubes, the abalone and one metate. Fascinating to see how he had things placed. No need to wonder why. Days earlier, on our way to Merida from Oaxaca, we stopped at Misol Ha outside of Palenque. A truly magnificent waterfall that he and my mother loved dearly. Mexico not only holds memories of my childhood and harbors a deep nostalgia but it is now also the representation of THEM, in every place they ever took us. In the ruins and nature, in the people and in its very sky, which is the most romantic sky I have ever seen. I know that is where they are - in the abundance of light - always with us. Two paintings rested on the east wall of the studio. One titled: “Sleep As Black As Beauty” And the other: “I Am Always Here” As I have said before.... Even in death, James is full of surprises. My mom delivered mail for 11 years and ended up working for the postal service for 26 years before she retired. They are the second largest employer in the United States, but they are not tax supported. Most people assume they are. My mom retired in 2011 but has spent the last seven years (including early March of this year) flying to D.C. yearly to lobby for postal rights and to fight to prevent privatization of a service that is so crucial to so many and is in fact mandated in our constitution. You can buy stamps online, you can send a friend package, and you can vote in the upcoming election! On the cover this month is British-Nigerian designer @yinka_ilori’s Project Earth installation for @theofficialselfridges that features three shops windows called ‘Dedications to Earth’ - each one offering a view of a natural landscape created using every day materials. The installations also evoke messages of hope. The cover features sun-disks, each one “dedicated to every new sunrise that gives us a chance to make a change”. The cover is also part of this month’s Colour Issue, which explores the nature of colour within design, architecture and art - be it to enhance a narrative, express a culture, or entice a sense of hope and positivity. What an honour to be featured in the @thetimes today, writing about my experiences of prejudice and racism throughout my life and at work - for the colour of my skin and my religion. From being labelled as ‘new’ at work (that’s ‘not entirely white’) to being told to ‘go back to where I come from’ - that’ll be Manchester then - and my favourite of all ‘where am I really from?’ Thankfully conversations and actions around diversity and inclusion are now at the heart of my industry and some parts of society, (though let’s not think for a moment racism is over just because we’re talking about it, it isn’t). There’s still much work to be done. I hope this piece adds an interesting and worthwhile perspective to the conversation and encourages people to continue to challenge their own unconscious bias towards friends and colleagues. 🎉 It’s official: Allies and Advocates will be out this November on Wiley Publishing!!! This is the *official* book cover. I am so excited, but getting here wasn’t necessarily smooth sailing. Candidly, I struggled with the book cover. After looking at a few options - some that used my image, others that didn’t - I wasn’t sure a photo of my face on the cover was the way to go. Furthermore, I’ve devoted my career to understanding and teaching others about inclusion and equity, so I can identify privilege in its many forms. I also work to have a keen awareness of my own privilege and to be responsible with it. So I wondered what message it would send to have my fair-skinned face on the cover of a book about diversity. I wondered if it was irresponsible. I asked trusted friends and colleagues, and the responses were mixed. In the end, I went with the advice of my publisher - this image was always their # 1 book cover choice. All of that to say, I’m not immune to the nuances inherent in this work. And it is always work. My father passed away on Wednesday night. I will miss him dearly. I’ve been at a loss for words since his passing. I loved my father with my whole heart. It’s been surreal to hear from so many people how my father impacted their lives for the better. He always had a way of shining a light in the darkest of places. I wish my father could have been here for longer but I guess you can’t argue with fate. I can scream at fate, I can disagree with fate, but I can not change it. I know the angels came to take him with nothing but loving intentions. He lived his life to the fullest up until the very last moment. he did not suffer and he was able to pass with his family surrounding him with love. Today is my dia-versery! If you’ve known me since 2007, I apologize because these posts are probably getting old. Just imagine if you actually HAD diabetes since 2007! :’) in the first photo I was undiagnosed and getting sicker by the day. Thankfully I didn’t go into diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) before I got to the hospital. . . I’ve never posted the second picture before, because I am unrecognizable. I am 80 lbs, 5’7” and SICK as hell. I looked like shit and I felt like shit but this picture makes me laugh because my mom and I joked around and said, “is this how diabetics have to eat?”. Whenever I tell the story of my diagnosis I always talk about how I was so afraid I’d have to start eating salad. If you’ve known me for awhile you also know I forking hate salad, lettuce, anything leafy and green. Over the years I’ve answered with a lot of “YES, I can eat that” and learned a lot about how to take care of myself. It’s never been easy. But it’s getting better with technology and experience. . . This year is 13 years living life as a type one diabetic. Now I’ve officially lived most of my life as a type one! I’ve lived with this disease long enough to even experience the actual medical name shifting from juvenile diabetes to plain old type one diabetes. I’ve done multiple daily injections, 2 different insulin pumps, and now with a continuous glucose monitor (thank gawd). . . I think this year my message is going to be that A.) insulin is too forking expensive. This needs to change before more people die. And B.) please be aware of the symptoms for your sake and your loved ones. If you are extremely thirsty, dehydrated, and peeing CONSTANTLY you need to call your doctor. And I’m not talking like “wow I was out in the sun all day” thirsty, this is some next level shit. There are other symptoms as well like muscle cramps, fruity breath, blurred vision, and fatigue. Im not sure why it makes me more nervous to release this version (maybe because I cant stand the sound of my own voice? LOL) than it did to launch the book into the world in the first place, but there you go.😁 Ill be honest, I didnt think I could do this. I was pretty sure I didnt want to do this. Jenna and I actually hired a narrator originally. And she was wonderful. But as soon as we heard my story coming out of her mouth, Jenna and I both knew we had no choice. I had to record this thing. So I did. It wasnt always easy and it definitely wasnt pretty at times. There are sections I recorded once--one and DONE, baby--and couldnt even review for accuracy. Thank God for Jenna--and our amazing editor Nico. It really does take a village. Ive learned a lot about strength and vulnerability (and GarageBand!) through this process. I also learned that I will never say never again, because every time I do the universe shows up to remind me that I’m still not finished with what I started. So here it is, The Size of Everything, in my words and my voice. I hope you love it. Ill be cowering beneath my bed if anyone needs me. Still hard to believe I made it all the way to London to work for visionary publisher @nicklogan⠀ ⠀ Privileged to have rubbed elbows daily with so many brilliant people like: David Bradshaw, Karl Templer, Nick Sullivan, Katie Grand, Lee Swillingham, Stuart Spalding, and Greg Williams to name a few. ⠀ ⠀ Props to Ashley Heath: Charming, brilliant, engaging guy who cultivated an approach to journalism & style that not only influenced a generation of men but made a huge impact in media where no Bi-Annuals existed before Homme+ The visionary publications he produced not only recorded what was going on in culture, but also played a part in progressing it. Dude is funny as fuck and majorly underrated. ⠀ ⠀ Worked on 8 issues before taking the helm of the monthly Edition. Before being sold to EMap I was the only American creative to work for Wagadon. Kinda gotta puff my chest out about that💥💪🏼💥 ⠀ ⠀ #Funfact the origins of the title All Killer, No Filler” came from an old Stüssy T-shirt had growing up.
