Happy #FirstDayofFall! 🍂🍁 Who else is loving this weather? 🙌 We are celebrating with Claude Monet’s “Autumn on the Seine, Argenteuil.” Monet executed this painting of the Seine near Argenteuil, northwest of Paris, shortly after his arrival there in 1871—likely from the small boat he had converted into a floating studio. He included the Château Michelet and other recognizable architectural landmarks. The small, delicate brushstrokes identify this work as belonging to the “high” phase of Impressionism. The brilliant colors of Monet’s landscape are mirrored in the water below, resulting in a remarkable symmetry that makes it difficult to distinguish between the reflections and their sources. #highmuseumathome⠀ ⠀ Claude Monet (French, 1840–1926). Its official! The best small painting in the Royal Society of Marine Artists Annual Exhibition is this one - Waiting by John Lines RSMA. Awarded The RSMA Award for the Best Small Painting: For a work in any medium measuring no more than 30 cm / 12 inches along the longest dimension (excluding frame). Made possible by the generosity of a Life Member. Value £300. John says The picture was great fun to paint, small, close tonal scale, and a great subject. I thought the old jetty was a knock out with a super structure and colours, the hopeful fisherman atop - it just had to be painted … The only thing was that the tug had to be moved up river just a touch, but I have the artist’s licence! Ernest Lawson, a member of turn of the 19th and 20th Century group of American painters known as The Eight, and an exhibitor in the 1913 Armory Show, achieved early recognition with his impressionist landscape paintings. Lawson studied at the Art Students League in New York, and took summer classes in Cos Cob, Connecticut under John Henry Twachtman and Julian Alden Weir. Additionally, while living in France from 1893-1896, Lawson briefly attended the Acedémie Julian and shared a Paris studio with the writer Somerset Maugham, who used him as the model for the artist in his novel, Of Human Bondage. A meeting with Alfred Sisley at Moret-sur-Loing confirmed Lawson’s love of painting outdoors. Settled in New York by 1898, Lawson concentrated on sites of upper Manhattan – their light, seasons, and times of day. It was during this time that he joined the rebellion against the National Academy of Design when his work was rejected in 1905, and through his friend William Glackens, became a member of the Eight. Spring Night, Harlem River is a work that comes from the pinnacle of Lawson’s career. In it, the Washington Bridge at 181st Street is observed from below, against the night sky, heightening the drama and the powerful impact of the huge span. The blue and green tonalities of the painting, with its white, pink and gold highlights create a rich tapestry of color that undoubtedly attracted Duncan Phillips. 🎨: Desembarque de D. Leopoldina - Debret, 1818. . . . Você sabia? Os arcos comemorativos, como os que foram erguidos por ocasião da chegada de D. Leopoldina ao Rio de Janeiro em 1817, e as varandas, especialmente construídas para as cerimônias de aclamação de D. João VI, D. Pedro I e D. Pedro II, são exemplares do que hoje se entende como arquitetura efêmera, que eram aparatos públicos, arquitetônicos e artísticos, erguidos como cenários urbanos em ocasiões festivas especiais, podendo ser também em forma de colunas e de pirâmides. De duração breve, esses monumentos seguiam o gosto estilístico da época e eram desmontados ao final dos festejos. A arquitetura efêmera teve um caráter eminentemente emblemático e simbólico. No caso brasileiro, esses monumentos faziam conjunto com com o restante da decoração urbana, que seguia a tradição lusitana de enfeitar janelas com tapeçarias orientais, iluminar as ruas com luminárias e fogos e recobrir o calçamento público com folhagens. A wide path leads along the Thames. Some walkers stroll in the sunlight, a rowing boat moves in the glittering water. Delicate clouds in the blue sky seem to flee from the picture. With bright colors and a light-flooded lightness, the impressionist captures a summery snapshot. During his frequent stays in England, Sisley created more than ten landscapes in Hampton Court, the western suburb of London.
