Physicists Quiet the Quantum Whisper to Improve Gravitational Wave Detector Sensitivity Gravitational wave detectors have opened a new window to the universe by measuring the ripples in spacetime produced by colliding black holes and neutron stars, but they are ultimately limited by quantum fluctuations induced by light reflecting off of mirrors. LSU Ph.D. physics alumnus Jonathan Cripe, postdoctorsl fellow, NIST, and his team of LSU researchers have conducted a new experiment with scientists from Caltech and Thorlabs to explore a way to cancel this quantum backaction and improve detector sensitivity. In a new paper in Physical Review X, the investigators present a method for removing quantum backaction in a simplified system using a mirror the size of a human hair and show the motion of the mirror is reduced in agreement with theoretical predictions. The research was supported by the National Science Foundation. Louisiana State University Ph.D. physics alumnus Jonathan Cripe has conducted a new experiment with scientists from Caltech and Thorlabs to explore a way to improve gravitational wave detectors’ sensitivity. Credit: LSU Despite using 40-kilogram mirrors for detecting passing gravitational waves, quantum fluctuations of light disturb the position of the mirrors when the light is reflected. As gravitational wave detectors continue to grow more sensitive with incremental upgrades, this quantum backaction will become a fundamental limit to the detectors’ sensitivity, hampering their ability to extract astrophysical information from gravitational waves. “We present an experimental testbed for studying and eliminating quantum backaction,” Cripe said. “We perform two measurements of the position of a macroscopic object whose motion is dominated by quantum backaction and show that by making a simple change in the measurement scheme, we can remove the quantum effects from the displacement measurement. In Werkstatträumen der TU Dresden hatten sie die Aufgabe, ein Tablett zu bauen. Dabei waren alle Bereiche des Oberschulfaches WTH (Wirtschaft – Technik – Haushalt/Soziales) gefragt. Die Jugendlichen fertigten zunächst eine technische Skizze und einen Arbeitsablaufplan an. Während des Fertigungsprozesses tauchten sie in verschiedene handwerkliche Tätigkeiten ein. Den ersten Platz teilen sich in diesem Jahr zwei Schüler. Sowohl Marc Zimmer (Oberschule Markleeberg) als auch Erik Kluge (Erich Viehweg Oberschule Frankenberg) überzeugten die Jury mit ihrem Können. As a result of their actions, James Meredith, a Black United States Air Force veteran, was able to exercise his civil rights, enrolling in the previously all-white university. In the last few weeks, our focus has been on the completion of Mama house and this is the stage it has reached in the pictures you are seeing here below. We are so happy that her support project first phase is getting done finally and she would now be sleeping comfortably in her house soon. Broadway closed with little hope of reopening until deep into 2021. Film and TV production shut down. Designers planning their fall collections werent able to get us fabrics until those stores were allowed to reopen. Were very excited to announce that Salt Lake City is now home to one of the most advanced #recycling centers in the country! The new Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) was built and is operated by @wastemanagement. Its where all of Salt Lake City’s residential recycling is sorted before the material goes on to its final destination to turn into new goods. It’s a single-stream operation and sorts empty plastic bottles and containers, metal cans, cardboard, paper, and newspaper. The facility is outfitted with the latest recycling technology and equipment. This matters because consumer material continues to change at a rapid pace and the sheer quantity of recyclable material being processed has also gone up dramatically– and will only continue to grow. So we need facilities that can keep up, especially with the inundation of “contamination” in recycling bins (these are items that aren’t recyclable in the blue bin, but can overwhelm these facilities – like plastic bags, the many types of new-fangled packaging, Styrofoam, as well as things that obviously shouldn’t go in there like hoses, bowling balls, food, clothing, trash etc. See our Stories for a glimpse.) What’s different at this MRF, you might ask? A good analogy is that it’s like going from the Flintstones with the old recycling technology to the Jetsons with the new technology . . . overnight. The facility is comprised of a network of machinery equipped with advanced automation capabilities and sorting optics. Rotating fiber screens, ballistic motion separators, 2D and 3D optical sorters, and barrel magnets are among technologies used to separate materials. More than 2.5 miles of fast-moving conveyor belts carry materials through this single-stream processing facility. The MRF has been operating for a month now and the improvements in recovery quantities and end-product quality are astounding. It’s also helping the City with fuel and time savings. Due to its closer location in SLC, we’ve been able to cut 1.5 hours from each of our recycling truck’s daily drives. Blackwoods Innovation Category Manager, Warren Wilson, and National Account Manager, Ross Spargo, have been busy assembling COVID-19 PPE kits for @kmartaus and @targetaus stores across the country while maintaining a strong focus on social distancing and minimising contact. The products within the kits, including gloves, anti-bacterial wipes, masks, specs and contamination waste bags are picked from Blackwoods Altona distribution centre and left in a transition area. From there, Warren and Ross collect the stock and move it to training rooms which are not currently in use. In 2019, the Food Bank Wellness team surveyed food pantry clients throughout southwestern, Pa to determine which foods were among the top five (#5) items they needed but had trouble getting. 37% of individuals reported they needed their food pantry to offer milk. This World Humanitarian Day, we take a moment to appreciate and pay special tribute to the effort that real life heroes have been making to help others in the most extreme circumstances throughout the world. The ripple effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have been globally widespread, and felt at a grassroots level within our REDD+ project communities. At the frontline response in the Kasigau Corridor, Wildlife Works has been working closely with the Taita Taveta County Resource Mobilization Committee and the community to combat COVID-19. Assistance has included distributing face masks, handwashing stations and soap, as well as donating food to those in need.
