Image of the first studio in Hoxton, currently shuttered. Like many cultural organisations we are now in a battle for survival, so apologies for going quiet here. We’ve been busy appealing for government aid, and the uncertainty of our situation makes it hard to know what to say. We are so grateful to you all for being there rooting for us. We believe we will get through this, our members and students couldn’t be more supportive (man do you know who your team are when the chips are down), but everything still feels very uncertain as we wait on the results of various applications and appeals and more clarity on the government’s exit strategy. The current challenge is that while most of our members use the studios primarily for leisure, and the government aid was meant to include leisure sector businesses, so far we haven’t been eligible to receive it because assessments are based on information the Valuations Office Agency holds about the premises. They don’t recognise that anything that is not work could take place inside a workshop. Is anyone else in this position? Running a leisure organisation in the UK in a premises that isn’t recognised as suitable for this purpose? We would love to hear from you if you or others you know of are in a similar position so we can help each other. It can be hard to know what to say too, about a little pottery studio, when there are so many painful stories around, when people are fighting for their lives. At the same time, without a fight we are likely to lose many cultural organisations and social enterprises as these - with narrow margins and often niche activities - are currently most vulnerable to falling between the huge cracks in government support. We’ll be launching a #ceramicscanbeleisuretoo campaign soon and hopefully you guys can share your personal stories to help us get our point across to decisionmakers. . It is what it isnt ... (1/2) . My largest installation so far .. . It plays on the myth of the Potemkin Village. Since to me these panel buildings are a symbol for a failed social and political utopia - the idea was to build an entire city scape (a manifestation of an ideal society if you will), which works perfectly from a certain point of view and whose image stays complete if you follow the main road through the city (/image). As soon as you leave the right path or even look back, the illusion collapses and the complete image disappears. The remains are abstract volumes, ideas of buildings or thoughts - if you look at it from the opposite side of the room, there’s nothing left of it. From a third point in the room the random’ letters form the exhibition title. Interesting about the Potemkin village is also that the myth of the fake villages is based on the report of someone who hasn’t even seen them and set up the story only to discredit Potemkin out of personal interests .. just how fake news work today. .
