🗒️ ✍🏻 “El hombre que fue a esperarme al aeropuerto de Cambá Punta, en Corrientes era un antiguo poblador de esa región, un tipo experto.” “Así que piensa entrar al Iberá”, me dijo. “Si puedo” contesté. “¿Qué equipo trae?”, quiso saber. “Esto” (le mostré una bolsita de plástico con el cepillo de dientes y la máquina de afeitar). “Entrar es fácil – me alentó-, lo difícil es salir”.” 👉🏻 Ya en el año 1966, Iberá era catalogado (así como lo sigue siendo ahora incluso por la National Geographic) como uno de los últimos lugares salvajes del planeta; así lo retrataba en sus escritos la expedición del periodista Rodolfo Walsh por la región. En sus crónicas dejaba bien en claro el modo de vida en estas tierras que antes la habitaban mariscadores, los cuales se adentraban en los esteros por semanas buscando piezas animales para vender sus carnes y cueros a compradores de la ciudad 🏢🏢🏢. También refleja el futuro incierto para esta región 🤔, en la cual todavía no se decidía si secar todas las lagunas para así tener más tierras para pastoreo de ganado y producción de arroz, o si capaz llenar de agua toda la zona y construir diques para el aprovechamiento del agua, e incluso si elevar caminos terraplén o crear pequeños puertos que unieran distintos poblados en medio del estero. Sin duda los recursos de inversión que se hubiesen necesitado eran cifras astronómicas, lo cual hacía que esos planes sólo quedaran en la cabeza de quienes los pensaban 🙌🏻. Para la suerte del Yverá 🌅, el camino de la conservación se fue abriendo una brecha con el correr de los años. El cazador se convirtió en Guardaparque. El Iberá fue declarado Reserva Natural Provincial. Growing up, my Dad was always a registered Republican, I think it was part of the culture he was raised in, within the military and as a veteran. During the time leading up to the 2016 election however, he was real turned off by lack of respect and decency, especially towards veterans. As more details emerged, he grew more and more upset with the current administration, and I remember him proudly telling me he was now registered as an independent. My Father was a Vietnam War Veteran having served in the US Navy from 1966 to 1969 during which time he received the Navy Combat Action Ribbon, amongst other things and was a founding member of the Disabled Vietnam Veterans Association in Wilmington, he always championed the underdog, helped anyone in need, was tough as nails, but equally as kind and generous. The last time we hung out, before he’d gotten sick, we talked about life, travel, old cars, and all the cool stuff a father and son will BS about on the porch, we both knew it was getting late in the game, when he said- I just wanna live long enough to see this son of a bitch voted out of office… Early voting was happening while he was in the hospital, the end was looming, but my Dad was holding on, he had a few things he wanted squared away, one of which was making sure my Mother’s situation was handled with the VA, and a few other items, lastly, he wanted to vote, he was just strong enough to fill out his ballot and give my mother a fist bump and a thumbs up, and then rested while it was delivered to the board of elections. He died the following day. He’d fought and worked hard his entire life for what he believed in, and to do his best with what he had, to provide for his family and loved ones. Voting was his final act of trying to leave a better future for the people he cared about. I found this note on his desk afterwards, while cleaning up some of his things, the founding principles of this American experiment were important to him. 🎢 Paultons Park, Ower, Romsey SO51 6AL 25 minutes from central Southampton (Booking needed) 🐷 Home to Peppa Pig World, which is great for under 6s. 🎡 Loads of rides for kids 6+ too from backward rollercoasters to log flumes and everything in between. 🌳 Loads of green space for a picnic in the summer. I recommend the Japanese Garden in the center of the park as its a great place for the kids to explore the bridges and small river. ☔ Loads to do in the winter months too. Head towards Peppa Pig World for the under cover picnic benches and soft play. (Currently not open due to CV19) 💫 Three playgrounds that are great for all ages. Two splash parks and loads of benches for the grown-ups. Its the cleanest theme park you will ever go too! 🦅 Loads of animals to including exotic birds and animals from Africa. 🅿️ Parking is free. 🚾 There are toilets everywhere including dedicated baby changing cubicles around the park. 🍦Hot food can be brought from around the park, as can ice creams and other treats. In 1966 Jeff Sykes designed and built his first racing scull that would assist him winning the Australian Interstate Sculling Championship – the Presidents Cup, held on the Huon River in Tasmania. That first boat was the beginning for what became Jeff Sykes & Associates Pty Ltd, now generally known simply as “Sykes”. Within two years of commencing in business, a Sykes boat was competing at the Mexico Olympics and within eight years, Sykes’s first rowing gold medal boat (also Australia’s first) was achieved at the 1974 World Championships (LM4-). Australia has won 4 Olympic Gold medals in Sykes. More than any other boat type. Today, 54 years later, Jeff’s passion and desire to be the best still lives on – that very first wooden Sculling boat and the 1974 Gold Medal boat still exist too. Jeff retired from the business in 2000.
