From the top of the viewpoint and close to the waterfall, one can feel the mist that is produced by the fall of the water. Stone arch bridge on Bells Mill Road, over the Wissahickon Creek. Built in 1820 (!!), probably one of the oldest in our area continually in use. Enjoy a view of an 1870 stereoscope of it too - you can see one of the many mill buildings that filled the Wissahickon valley back then. The bridge itself is in pretty bad shape (when you look up close) - I’ve heard in the past suggestions for replacing it, but likely it would end up ugly and boring like the one built on Germantown Avenue. We keep getting asked “What’s the solution? What’s the film’s proposal? What steps can we take?” It seems that every 4 or 5 years some documentary comes out that presents a problem, a set of reasons for those problems (conveniently abstaining from a discussion on colonial capitalism, race or human rights), and presents a list of steps which if everyone followed, would make the world perfect. Supposedly. But the hard work is internal. It requires humility. It requires sacrificing ego and finding a sense of place within all of Nature. It comes from approaching food systems as the systems they are and realizing we are stewards - not Masters over a domain. This humility allows us to recognize signs - like the songs of the birds, the activity of the insects, the call of the rivers. This is not as easy as reading a list of inputs and amounts with an expected set of outcomes. Traditional Ecological Knowledge is not reductive. It is expansive and it takes a commitment to personal transformation. But, gulp. That’s hard! It’s easier to post memes and watch YouTube videos than to sit in Nature and listen. But that’s what’s required of us. To sit. To breathe. To listen. Food can transform lives. But only if we recognize that the rot we see in the system begins in our own minds. Fly tippers who dumped household waste between Leamington and Southam were traced after an investigation and have donated £1,000 to us, instead of going to court. The police asked the public to recommend a wildlife charity and we were nominated. Were going to use the donation to clear up the litter left at our Bishops Hill nature reserve over the summer.
