There’s so many things I want to say, I just don’t know how to say it. This piece isn’t to offend anyone whether your black lives matter or all lives matter - it’s about justice. George Floyd died in the hands of police officers who are here to serve and protect. It makes me wonder how many times this happened before the world / America woke up to our reality. I try not to let my emotions get the best of me. But this is the only way I can really express myself. I pray for a day where someone who looks like me won’t ever have to be afraid that this will happen to them. I pray for a day where a little boy or girl won’t have to experience this poison that divides us. As a country and for humanity’s sake we have to change so this never happens again. Toni Morrison said that the purpose of having freedom is to secure it for someone else, an idea Congressman John Lewis lived. When I taught high school in Boston years back, I did a big unit on Morrison. We read ancillary texts and talked about her world as it relates to the Civil Rights movement and being Black in America in the 50s and 60s. We read and discussed King, Malcolm X, Bayard Rustin, bell hooks, James Baldwin. We watched a video of that day on the bridge in Selma. I’d point out John Lewis and say, That’s my Congressman from when I lived in Atlanta. The kids would say, Wow! How young was he? What happened to him? When did he die? I’d say, He’s not dead. He’s still a Congressman in Georgia. They all thought that because he was on that bridge he’d have to be like 100 years old now. I’d say, No and sadly, that wasn’t so long ago. I’d say John Lewis is still alive and still fighting, still helping others get free and they’d all be silent for a minute, thinking about the man and what is possible in a life. I recognize that I will never understand the experience of a black man in this country, how it feels to live under the oppression of systemic, institutional racism, to fear the very individuals that have sworn to protect me. That is not my experience, and I cannot pretend otherwise. I am, however, committed to listening to and supporting the voices of those who do understand and to take action where I can. In 2007, I painted 23 portraits of famous North Carolina musicians to showcase in Pepper’s Pizza on Franklin Street, on top of a mural of the state. Each portrait was arranged in proximity to where the musician was born. I wanted to remind people that NC has produced some of the greatest musical trailblazers the world has ever known. When Peppers closed in 2013, the portraits were purchased by UNC’s Department of Music, where they hang today, and I began thinking about repainting them as murals in each of the birthplaces. This week, I completed the first installment of the NC Musician Murals Project. It’s jazz messiah John Coltrane, born in Hamlet, NC in 1926. The mural is based on an iconic shot by legendary photographer Chuck Stewart. It’s been a huge honor to assist Curatorial Queen @the_lynx_eyed with organizing Sotheby’s first ever auction dedicated to Hip Hop - happening live online next Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 6pmET @sothebys. The auction includes 120 lots with an emphasis on the late 70s through the “Golden Age” and includes contemporary art, photography, historic artifacts, one-of-a-kind experiences, fashion and jewelry, rare flyers, posters, and publications, and more. The majority of items have been consigned directly by artists or their estates and a portion of Sotheby’s proceeds will benefit the Queens Public Library to support their Hip Hop Programs coordinated by “Uncle” Ralph McDaniels, as well as Building Beats, a non-profit community that teaches tech, entrepreneurial, and leadership skills to underserved NYC youth through DJ and music programs. The Father of Jazz Poetry, Langston Hughes, embodies the essence and mood of Harlem: cool, relaxed, loyal, vibrant, authentic. His valuable contributions made to the fields of poetry, opera and writing and as a major figure in the Harlem Renaissance and abroad are still being felt even on today. Works like “Harlem (what happens to a deferred)?” allowed us to always remember our being and existence are never in vain and holds us to continue to dreaming even in the mist of whatever is happening my at the moment. Though he may be absent from the body his ashes rest in Harlem, specifically beneath the entrance of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture along with a line from his poem “The Negro Speaks of Rivers. Charlie Parker stuck out in my mind. Parker didnt perform like his black predecessors, he typified rebellion, what some people might call militancy. Here was a black artist who played and didnt exhibit any aspects of the happy darkie playing. Black people, entertainers (before the early 50s) were supposed to entertain more than play. They had to sing and dance. But Parker forced people to listen. They had to say, `Wow, this is great music, and he isnt smiling and singing and dancing. I’ve debated posting this for a few days as I didn’t really know where to start, or whether it was appropriate for me to say anything. I’m certain there are others who feel the same. • As a young, white male, it’s easy to feel disconnected from this uprising, but it’s taken the death of George Floyd and the swell of protests, riots and social media activity that’s followed to make me realise: my attitude is, and has always been, part of the problem. • I don’t think I’ve ever, in my twenty six years of existence on this planet, learned as much about inequality and human-to-human persecution as I have in the past week. I’ve seen countless podcasts and channels I didn’t even know existed pop up on my social media feeds. I’ve trawled the profiles of some hugely prominent black rights activists, enthralled by their content and captivated by their stories of struggles. • To me, the phrase “white privilege” sparked mental images of people like Calvin Candie (DiCaprio’s character in Django Unchained, for those of you that don’t know), or the white, British, upper class elite that play polo and live on huge estates. Before now, there has never been a time where the meaning of “white privilege” has ever been properly explained to me. • White privilege is being able to step outside and walk around not feeling different, just like I do every day. White privilege is feeling part of the crowd in school. White privilege is starting a new job and feeling the same as everyone else. White privilege is never having to worry about any reference, in any form, to the pigmentation of your skin. • Using the (very small) platform I have, I will ashamedly, openly admit that I’ve been part of the problem. I’ve heard racial slurs used and said nothing. I haven’t bothered to educate myself. I’ve skipped past documentaries on Netflix that could’ve opened my eyes. I’ve even scrolled past social media posts simply because I didn’t think they applied to me. • Fuck me, how wrong I was. This applies to us all. We created racism. John Lewis is a hero of mine because of his civil rights activism and dedication to justice throughout his lifes work, both in the streets and in politics. Rep. Lewis worked as a grassroots organizer and was beaten by police while marching for racial equality, but also campaigned, was elected to congress, and served as a lawmaker for 40 years. John Lewis is a role model for using what I call the inside/outside strategy, which entailed working in whatever zone necessary, outside the system or inside, and using his powers as an organizer and communicator to make the nation better. There is no better example of dedication to justice and civic engagement than Rep. John Lewis. With the election approaching and the rise of voter suppression strategies utilized by the Republicans, I felt an image of John Lewis reminding people that the hard-fought progress on voting rights and equality must be maintained vigilantly when threatened, would be an important message to send before Nov. 3. I also wanted to symbolically thank John Lewis for all his service to humanity. When John Lewis made his cancer diagnosis public, my friend and photographer, Steve Schapiro suggested that we collaborate to honor him. I was thrilled by that idea and wrote a letter to John Lewis proposing the image of him. He gave the project his blessing but sadly passed away shortly before the art was completed. I know he was a humble person, but I hope hed be proud that his actions have given inspiration and fuel to me and millions of others. Harry Belafonte performed in 1967 at the University of Baltimore as part of a civil rights tour with Dr. Martin Luther King. After the show, an envelope was left for the activist at the front desk of the fieldhouse. Inside were six bullets and a letter written by a state trooper. “After having met and heard Dr. King and you, I will never fire a weapon ever again.” The trooper wrote “ I am forever grateful for this experience.” Harry Belafonte and Dr. King had a deep frendship and both chose to use their voices for love, strength, and unity of justice and equality. This newspaper cartoon was trying to humorously depict what I needed to do to be safe leaving my home after a friend and I were taken down at gunpoint by police. The shock of seeing that many guns trained on us, caused me to turn to my friend who had recently graduated from the same university to ask, are you wanted?. Incredulous, he looked wide eyed back at me and said ``No, are you?. We couldnt fathom what would warrant this many police cars and every officer on scene with gun drawn At one point handcuffed lying face down with my nose on streetcar tracks I turned my head to ask my friend if he was okay and the angry officer told us to shut the F.... up. I could hear the disappointment in their voices when all they could find in my car was my friends takeout chicken and fries. We were scared and confused and one wrong move on our part could have led to us being shot. Ive been thinking about the takedown this week and I am grateful we both escaped with our lives. We know so many others didn’t. You dont need to live in black skin to understand how horrific it is to watch the life forced out of another human being by the person society has appointed to protect them. I told my 13 year old I thought we were bringing her into a better world than my generation grew up in but I fear that is not the case. As some of you may know, here in the USA, National Hispanic Heritage Month (el Mes Nacional de la Herencia Hispana) is a period from 15 September to 15 October for recognizing the contributions & influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture, & achievements of the United States. And what better way to kick this particular week off than with this fantastic painted tribute to Tito Puente, the king of timbales & the mambo, a gent who you could say was the international musical ambassador of Latin New York to the rest of the world back in the day. No this is not a mural in Spanish Harlem (El Barrio) nor is it in The Bronx. It was created by El Maestro of the illustrated Colombian “picó” sound system, Señor @williamgupe aka William Gutiérrez Peñaloza (born in Barranca Nueva, Bolívar, Colombia, in 1959). The Latin music made & enjoyed by Latinos (& others) in New York during the 20th century had a huge impact on the rest of the world & Tito Puente is certainly a central figure in that history. The fact that his iconic image, inspired by a photograph of him performing at Manhattan’s fabled Palladium, travelled all the way down to coastal Colombia & was interpreted in the afro-Colombian tropical psychedelic street culture style of the “picoteros” (a term indicating the DJs and their custom designed sound system equipment but also referring to the people who dance to those sound systems) attests to the transnational reach of our Hispanic heritage made here in the USA. Black Lives Matter. His life mattered just as much as anybody else’s. Racism needs to stop. I felt like I needed to speak about it through my art. He spoke of power not as a unidirectional thing but a dynamic relation, complex games of strategy that when exercised can direct or determine another’s behaviour. If the only power we are willing to recognise is sovereign violence, social ideals and visions for our future can quickly become hijacked for goals that we didn’t dream. While repressive power is focused on institutions such as police, army, judge, politicians, he argued it is normalising power that no one is free from. For power to function effectively it must conceal itself, through seemingly neutral institutions our beliefs, values, desires, decisions, are shaped in a way that make it seem as though they are autonomous to us. Scientific knowledge, education systems, family units, AI technology while intended for the good of humanity cannot be divorced from power. At micro levels, the idea of “not (having/being) enough” is a degrading mental bias motivated by normalised standards and judgements that define the limits of what we can be. Real talk I’m just thankful I got the opportunity to call Andre a friend. First time I ever met him I met @lewtuc @iamchuckbone and @diddy for the first time too. I had no idea about the movement they were creating. I definitely didn’t imagine I’d have any opportunity to contribute to it in any way. Years later I’d RE-meet Dre and he would tell me how amazing I was and all I could be every time I saw him. He loved how much of a family man I was and that I was smart and in his words was a “star.” I never grew up around black men willing to celebrate black men like that. I last saw Dre Christmas Eve after running into him in the city and him telling me to come by @wendycredle party. That night, me, him, Lew and Chuck partied all night with the same authentic loving energy he had from that first time we ever met. Andre you will forever be a black national treasure who showed us how important it is to see the best in each other. The true godfather of the sexy- ghetto fabuloso. You live forever in us all. Happy birthday to a legend. With all the ups n downs in my life I’m glad I got to attend The James Baldwin High School in lower Manhattan. Not to say I LOVED school but going to this one really made things easier. Here kids from all walks of life read about your activism, your poetry and for example your incomplete but somehow still whole body of work Notes of a Native Son where you naturally pushed your readers to think beyond the “limits” society set upon us. Here kids learned things other schools would skip over. Things that really matter. The Kalief Browder Story - In 2010 when Kalief was just 16 years old he was stopped by the police in the Bronx and falsely accused of stealing a backpack. With no evidence and no confession he was sent to Rikers island jail complex, without trial. He endured three years of torture and abuse waiting for a trial that never came. For two of those years he suffered in solitary confinement, all because his family couldn’t afford the bail money. - Kalief always maintained his innocence and in 2013 he was brought in front of a judge and refused to take a plea bargain for something he did not do. A week later the charges were dropped and he was released from prison. Kailef spent the next 2 years suffering with the mental and physical abuse he had sustained in prison and decided to take his own life. Kalief hung himself from an air conditioning unit outside his bedroom window at his mother’s home. His mother discovered his body, he was only 22 years old. - The Kalief Browder Foundation seeks to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline prevalent in urban communities by providing interventions that support youth and young adults impacted by the criminal system of incarceration and to become agents of policy change. A few years before social distancing was taking place my partner @flytetymelewis and I had the honor and pleasure to speak at the Hollywood Walk Of Fame Ceremony honoring The Black Godfather Clarence Avant. Needless to say he brought the best together to celebrate that day and one of my favorite parts was hanging with the legendary Bill Withers who Clarence had signed to his legendary Sussex Records label in the 70’s. Words wouldn’t do justice to explain my feelings for Bill and his influence on my musical life so I won’t try. I got into a conversation with @cyndihandson and @Kadijakamara in May about doing a tribute mural for Ty on a wall somewhere in Brixton, I replied that I was already working on an illustration of Ty that I wanted to share online in the coming weeks which I thought would be a nice contribution based on some photos I’d already taken of Ty. As the conversations grew with Cyndi it started to feel more like a reality so I said RIGHT LETS DO THIS. On one condition I wanna go HUGE or NOTHING!!! I wanted a wall befitting of Ty’s stature, I wanted a wall that was gonna me a challenge and test my ability . So Cyndi got back to me after speaking with The Brixton Project and Network Rail and she sent me a picture of a potential wall on Valentia Place in Brixton. It was about 30 feet hight by 40 feet PERFECT. The wall was over 150 years old, has survived two World Wars and seen the coming of the Windrush Generation. I couldn’t ask for a more fitting wall for a memorial piece of art for our dear friend. So all that was left for me to do was to convince my long time airbrushing and graffiti partner in crime @nosaj_cee to get involved as we hadn’t painted in well over a decade. After a lengthy phone call he was in and ready to go. I then asked @benjireid for the use of his photography as a reference and he gave us his blessing. And Cindy and I had a conversation with @jazzrefreshed who were more than willing funded the project.
