Happy birthday to a legend. With all the ups n downs in my life I’m glad I got to attend The James Baldwin High School in lower Manhattan. Not to say I LOVED school but going to this one really made things easier. Here kids from all walks of life read about your activism, your poetry and for example your incomplete but somehow still whole body of work Notes of a Native Son where you naturally pushed your readers to think beyond the “limits” society set upon us. Here kids learned things other schools would skip over. Things that really matter. The 17-time grammy award winning singer-songwriter crossed over into virtually every genre. From starting his own Recording, Publishing & Management company, to owning his Masters in the 60’s and setting the tone for Black ownership, his legacy is astounding. His rendition of “Georgia on my mind” was made the official state song of Georgia. Today in Black History: Otis Redding, one of the greatest American soul singers/songwriters, was born on this day in 1941 in Dawson, Georgia. Redding was raised in Macon, where he started singing at a young age and was influenced by musicians such as Sam Cooke and Little Richard. His breakthrough into soul music came when Redding drove to Memphis, Tennessee with Johnny Jenkins and the Pinetoppers for a recording session at Stax Records in 1962. The Stax co-owner Jim Stewart allowed Otis to cut a few songs at the end of the recording session. The result was “These Arms of Mine”, which released that same year and launched his career. This was the first of many hit singles (including “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” “Respect,” and “Try a Little Tenderness) and his open-throated, emotional style and powerful singing became the measure of the decades great soul artists. In December of 1967, Redding and four members of his band were killed when their chartered plane crashed into a Wisconsin lake. He was only 26 years old. Shortly before his death, he recorded his number one hit single “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” which shot to the top of the charts. In commemoration of the legacy that Black women suffragists have left us we have selected 10 women from the archives who worked tirelessly to give ALL women the right to vote. The women above were doing the work, and fought to be in rooms wherein both white women and Black men disregarded their presence. They were purposefully and systematically excluded and when August 18th, 1920 came around these women along with dozens more only reified their determination to make sure their right to vote was secured. Thank you to them! The best way to thank them is to register to vote if you haven’t already. They dedicated their lives to this work and many of them died before they could see what their lives’ work amounted to. a part of me regrets not coming to jimmy baldwin’s work earlier. but the other part of me is thankful I came to know his words when I did. I did not grow up with a father figure, just the stories of one. which lead me to a life of searching. not always consciously. my hardheadedness often made me feel like I never needed one, but in very deep moments of vulnerability, that’s all I wanted. baldwin’s words put into clear focus what I had been trying to articulate about my own experience. boyhood. manhood. Daniel Prude. 41 years old, 41 minutes of color. Stolen on March 30th, 2020 in Rochester, NY. His brother called the police seeking help because he was worried for his brother who was acting out. Daniel was unarmed and in handcuffs when he lost consciousness from being held down by the officers. He died later in the hospital. There are plenty more details and I encourage others to follow this story. Video footage was just released and so it’s starting to pick up some press, despite his family fighting for over 5 months seeking answers. I’ll post a link to read more in my story. Real talk I’m just thankful I got the opportunity to call Andre a friend. First time I ever met him I met @lewtuc @iamchuckbone and @diddy for the first time too. I had no idea about the movement they were creating. I definitely didn’t imagine I’d have any opportunity to contribute to it in any way. Years later I’d RE-meet Dre and he would tell me how amazing I was and all I could be every time I saw him. He loved how much of a family man I was and that I was smart and in his words was a “star.” I never grew up around black men willing to celebrate black men like that. I last saw Dre Christmas Eve after running into him in the city and him telling me to come by @wendycredle party. That night, me, him, Lew and Chuck partied all night with the same authentic loving energy he had from that first time we ever met. Andre you will forever be a black national treasure who showed us how important it is to see the best in each other. The true godfather of the sexy- ghetto fabuloso. You live forever in us all. I realize I’ve posted my art once in the six months since I said I’d try to put more stuff out there, mostly because I’ve felt unmotivated when it came to my work. However, I felt compelled to do this one after experiencing an overwhelming amount of emotions and thoughts about both how I view racism and why I’ve never been vocal on this issue. Black people in America, really all people of color for that matter, have been treated as less than humans for far too long. Though I never consciously thought about this, my silence and lack of introspection both contribute to the problem. That ends today. I’m not the type of person to go march for something. I can draw though, so hopefully this sketch can contribute to the millions of posts and chime in with the millions of voices calling for the human race to come together and bring about some real change. John Lewis is a hero of mine because of his civil rights activism and dedication to justice throughout his lifes work, both in the streets and in politics. Rep. Lewis worked as a grassroots organizer and was beaten by police while marching for racial equality, but also campaigned, was elected to congress, and served as a lawmaker for 40 years. John Lewis is a role model for using what I call the inside/outside strategy, which entailed working in whatever zone necessary, outside the system or inside, and using his powers as an organizer and communicator to make the nation better. There is no better example of dedication to justice and civic engagement than Rep. John Lewis. With the election approaching and the rise of voter suppression strategies utilized by the Republicans, I felt an image of John Lewis reminding people that the hard-fought progress on voting rights and equality must be maintained vigilantly when threatened, would be an important message to send before Nov. 3. I also wanted to symbolically thank John Lewis for all his service to humanity. When John Lewis made his cancer diagnosis public, my friend and photographer, Steve Schapiro suggested that we collaborate to honor him. I was thrilled by that idea and wrote a letter to John Lewis proposing the image of him. He gave the project his blessing but sadly passed away shortly before the art was completed. I know he was a humble person, but I hope hed be proud that his actions have given inspiration and fuel to me and millions of others.
