We are celebrating Native American Day from September 23 to 25 this year in California. Palomar Mountain was home for many tribes of the Payómkawichum (Luiseños) peoples of Southern California, which includes the tribes La Jolla, Pauma, Pala, Pechanga, Rincon, and Soboba. . These tribes lived here for many generations as evidenced by the deep rock mortars found throughout the park. Primarily used to pulverize acorns, these mortars were used to grind up many other kinds of nuts, berries, and fruit. Local tribes continue these traditions today in order to preserve their culture and teach newer generations about their heritage. . To this day, they practice cultural land management, oral history traditions, and boast an incredible collection of beautiful woven baskets from natural materials. - @palomarmountainsp on Instagram

Turtle alert! Its that time of year again, when baby turtles are hatching and emerging. Weve already spotted a few tiny Snapping Turtles making their way toward the pond at Gilsland Farm, so please drive slowly and look carefully. According to our wildlife biologist Sarah Haggerty, they often nest in the sandy shoulders of roads, and hatch dates can vary from year to year and location to location, depending on temperature and other conditions. Also, if its too late in the year, they may hatch from their eggs but not emerge from the nest, so they overwinter underground and emerge from the nest in spring. Our educator Catherine Griset, who fostered a baby snapper last year, adds, As for anyone who might come across a baby snapping turtle, the best option is always to let them to do their own thing. They’re born/hatched knowing to head toward water for safety where they will overwinter in the mud. While we took one in for educational purposes, observing from a safe distance and allowing the babies to make their way on their own helps this species continue to thrive. Desde el año 2013 el Liceo Austral Lord Cochrane cuenta con un Programa de Educación al Aire Libre desarrollado junto a Tompkins Conservation Chile, donde las caminatas y campamentos son parte de la formación escolar a través de la actividad curricular de Senderismo.  El programa acaba de ser destacado por el Ministerio de Educación como un ejemplo de Buenas Prácticas: “Este programa se destaca por la forma en que los jóvenes aprenden, debido a que el conocimiento se genera en base a una experiencia, es decir de manera vivencial”. Verónica Venegas, integrante del equipo de Tompkins Conservation Chile, destacó “desde el año 2013 que hemos trabajado con el Liceo de Cochrane promoviendo experiencias formativas al aire libre y en áreas silvestre protegidas, así las diferentes vivencias van vinculando a los y las jóvenes con su territorio y la conservación de la naturaleza. Estamos muy orgullosos de este trabajo que hoy continúa siendo gestionado de manera local por el Liceo Austral Lord Cochrane y un equipo de monitores ambientales”. Gracias a este innovador proyecto, las  caminatas  y  campamentos  son  parte  de la formación escolar a través de la actividad curricular de Senderismo  para alumnos de la enseñanza media. En los siete años que ha durado el programa, los más de ocho generaciones de estudiantes del liceo  han recorrido en total más de dos mil quinientos kilómetros en la red de senderos del actual Parque Nacional Patagonia y sus sectores Valle Chacabuco, Tamango y Jeinimeni; los   alrededores   de   Cochrane,   San Lorenzo, Los Ñadis, llegando hasta el patrimonio de la humanidad Cueva de las Manos del río Pinturas en Argentina. With spooky season approaching and the fact that one of yall reported my previous post until it got deleted, here is Memorial Mound. The funeral home and mausoleum was located underground, founded by Clyde Booth in 1992. According to Booth, it was an affordable alternative to your traditional burials costing around $2000-$3000 for funeral services, caskets, and burial plot. After Booths death, the property was essentially abandoned. During its abandonment, the funeral home was ransacked with some of the bones being stolen as one explorer decided to post the address onto 4chan. Calling the police about the state of the bodies and property deemed fruitless. Today were proud to launch one of the largest restoration projects in Australia’s history, planting 25 million biodiverse trees across 20,000 hectares by 2025 (that’s equivalent to one-quarter the size of Canberra!) Sometimes you have to disappear into the woods with one of your best girlfriends, a bottle or two of champagne, good weed, and lots of belly laughs and good conversation. Time well spent. One of the many valuable lessons I’ve learned over the last several months is that my boundaries are important, and I will no longer glorify busyness in my life. Connecting with loved ones is still allowed and if you can do it, do it. I forgot how much I needed it. Check in on your friends, I think we are all lonely and are longing for that connection. I know I was. Allowing myself to get away and enjoy the moment only recharged me and allows me to be better, it always also gives me perspective and reaffirms my commitment to honoring myself and my mental health above all else. On this day..... On June 10 1692, Bridget Bishop, the first person to be tried in court on charges of witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trials, was executed at Proctor’s Ledge. Her body was placed in a crevice at Proctor’s Ledge as witches could not have a proper burial. Bridget was arrested and examined on April 19 and was held for trial. On June 2, she was tried and convicted of witchcraft. Her execution was 8 days later. Bridget was any easy target for accusation as she had a undesirable past, including a previous accusation for witchcraft (for which she was acquitted). The many accusations against her included the murder of her two previous husbands, men who did construction work to her basement found poppets in the walls, she bewitched the Shattuck’s son who became ill, the stealing of various items including a mill brass, having her imps harass her neighbor, and the sight of Bridget flying over her own orchard, among many other charges. Ten neighbors testified against her at her trial. Bridget is often confused for Sarah Bishop as they were both married to men called Edward Bishop. Bridget lived in Salem Town and owned an orchard. You may be asking yourself, what is this beautiful yellow brick road made of hay doing in the forest? This is a technique we have adopted from our regenerative ranching idol Greg Judy👨‍🌾! Technically speaking, its a winter technique but this lack of rain has forced us to pause grazing for a couple of weeks. So voila, heres how we do it!: 1. Thin the trees (aka cut some down) to give sunlight to the forest floor 🌳 2. Bring in pigs to disturb the soil a bit and clear the duff 🐖 3. Roll out an 1,800 lb. bale of hay 4. Cows eat that hay and return all the good nutrients back onto the land in the form of poop 💩 5. Watch as the bare soil gets covered by what they leave behind AND eventually grows all the beneficial grass seeds that are in the hay! 🌿 Pushing out that bale sure aint easy 💪 but folks, its WORTH it for the benefits of this method!! Where the North Folk of the Clearwater River enters the main channel of the Clearwater, the Corps of Discovery were exhausted and famished. It was the end of September 1805 and the difficult trek over the Continental Divide was finally behind them. But on this point of land over an 11-day period, they worked incredibly hard. This was Canoe Camp. The Corps arrived on September 26 and immediately searched for food. Deer and other large prey was nowhere to be found, so a horse was eaten. Then they tried fat dogs of the Indians. The crew was divided into five groups, and each with axes too small for the task, they began hacking away at five huge trees – probably red cedar or possibly ponderosa pine. They saved labor by building fires along the tops of the logs, as taught them by the Nez Perce, then scraped out the ashes and charred wood. They dried and repacked their possessions, branded and cut the forelocks off their 38 surviving horses so the animals were easily recognized when mixed with the Nez Perce herds. Finally, in the dark of night, they cached their saddles and some powder for the return trip over the divide. Four of the canoes are believed to have been large, although no journal keeper reported any dimensions. The fifth canoe was smaller, designed to more easily scout ahead of the others and check on the conditions of the rivers. On October 7, the men broke camp, loaded the canoes and shoved off around noon. For the first time since the fall of 1803, when they left the Ohio River, Lewis and Clark were going with the flow of a river, instead of against it. Today, Canoe Camp is a part of the 38-site Nez Perce National Historical Park. The camp site is within the unincorporated town of Ahsahka, Idaho, about 50 miles east of Lewiston.
